India's new oilfields regulation takes effect; to attract more FDI
India's amended Oilfields Regulation and Development Act went into effect yesterday (April 15), thus paving the way for new investments and operational efficiency in the energy sector, reported Wam citing the country's energy minister. Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri was addressing the 9th round of Open Acreage Licensing Policy and Special Discovered Small Field signing ceremony even as the amended law went into effect. Puri said that in the next two decades, a quarter of the world's incremental energy demand growth will come from India. "India currently relies on imports for 88% of its crude oil needs and for 50% of its requirements of natural gas. There is an urgent need, therefore, for domestic exploration and production," he explained. Puri said the amended legislation is a historic step into the future to meet the demands of India's rapidly growing energy sector. Future exploration agreements under the new law will use the term 'petroleum lease' aligning Indian practices with international standards, noted Puri. "The Indian hydrocarbon sector is entering a new era of accelerated exploration and development," the Minister said while addressing the gathering.

India to produce electricity from ocean waves, says minister
India is set to produce electricity from ocean waves in an innovative clean power initiative, said the Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. "With a vast coastline of 11,098 km spanning nine states and six other union territories, our untapped potential of ocean energy has been estimated at 40,000 MW," he stated. Puri said India had taken steps toward clean energy generation through this process by establishing the country's first wave energy pilot project in Mumbai. "This premier city of India is surrounded by sea. India's state-owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation is in charge of this pilot project," he added. According to experts, power generation from waves is a relatively new concept. It envisages floaters in water drawing energy from incoming waves by converting the rising and falling motion of the waves. Movement of the floaters compresses and decompresses hydraulic pistons which transmit bio-degradable hydraulic fluid into land located accumulators. Pressure built up by this rotates a hydraulic motor, which rotates the generator, and then the electricity is transferred into the grid, via an inverter, they added. Swedish wave energy developer Eco Wave Power is set to sign a collaboration agreement with a Fortune 500 Indian company for the first wave energy pilot project in Maharashtra, India, reported Offshore Energy. At the signing ceremony in New Delhi, the company will also showcase its wave energy generation model, demonstrating how its patented onshore technology harnesses ocean waves to produce electricity, stated the report. According to Eco Wave Power, the collaboration with the Indian company aims to explore the integration of wave energy into India's renewable energy strategy. 'With a coastline of 7,516 km and over 250 million people living along the shore, India has a unique opportunity to place wave energy at the forefront of its renewable energy strategy,' said Inna Braverman, Founder and CEO of Eco Wave Power.
