Nuclear drama deepens: Russia shrugs off Trump's submarine threat; boasts undersea superiority
In a chilling echo of Cold War posturing, Russia, in response to US President Donald Trump's nuclear vessels positioning order, claimed that it has more than enough nuclear submarines patrolling the world's oceans.
Russian Duma member Viktor Vodolatsky told state-run agency TASS that Trump's order to redeploy two US nuclear submarines to "appropriate regions" was already anticipated, and that the American vessels are firmly within Russia's watch.
"The number of Russian nuclear submarines in the world's oceans is significantly higher than the American ones, and the subs that US President Donald Trump ordered to be redirected to the appropriate regions have long been under their control.
So no response from the Russian Federation to the American leader's statement about the submarines is required," Vodolatsky said.
His comments came hours after Trump, in a Truth Social post, claimed he had repositioned US submarines in response to "extremely provocative statements" by Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's former president and now deputy head of the Russian Security Council.
"Let the two US subs sail, they have been in the crosshairs for a long time now," Vodolatsky added ominously.
"A fundamental agreement that must be concluded between Russia and America so that the whole world calms down and stops talking about the beginning of World War III," he added.
While the rhetoric has sent pulses racing across global headlines, Russian foreign policy experts are calling for calm. Fyodor Lukyanov, editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Affairs, downplayed Trump's statement, suggesting it was more social media showmanship than actual military strategy.
"Trump, as we know, runs his own channel and reacts, so to speak, emotionally, humanly and spontaneously. I think that the armed forces, the naval forces of the United States read this with great surprise. If this exchange of opinions continues, and Trump continues to be drawn into it, then, one way or another, he will probably have to take some action. In my opinion, so far this is only at the level of words," Lukyanov told local private news channel RBC TV.

ToR is a set of bilaterally agreed road map for BTA negotiations. Both sides have concluded five physical rounds of negotiations and several virtual discussions within that framework. In the process, the two sides have already reached some common ground, substantial enough to announce an interim deal, they said. 'We are engaged through virtual mode as on date and likely to iron out remaining differences when the American negotiating team visits India for the sixth physical round this month,' one of the people cited above said. The US negotiating team is expected to land in New Delhi on August 24 to participate in the sixth round of talks from August 25. According to the people, some concrete outcomes are expected after the successful conclusion of the sixth round towards the end of August, despite US President Donald Trump's recent statements and tariff actions against India. Trump on July 30 announced punitive tariffs on Indian goods through a post on Truth Social. The announcements involved 25% on Indian goods shipped to America and an unspecified levy for purchasing Russian oil. Trump's reaction was an outcome of India refusing to budge on retaining protections for its agriculture, dairy and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sectors from unfettered American imports. Another factor behind Trump's reaction was India importing almost one-third of its crude oil requirements from Russia. About that, Trump on July 31 said on Truth Social: 'I don't care what India does with Russia… They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.' According to the US Energy Information Administration's (EIA) country analysis updated on February 6, 2025, Russia was the primary source of India's crude oil and condensate imports in 2023, accounting for about 39% of its total imports, followed by Iraq (19%), Saudi Arabia (16%), United Arab Emirates (5%) and the US (4%). India imported 4.5 million barrels a day (b/d) of crude oil and condensate in 2023, it said. 'In 2022, after the United States and EU imposed sanctions on Russia, India began purchasing Russia's crude oil at a discount, increasing its imports more than sixfold to 740,000 b/d,' the report said. Energy hungry India, which is the world's third largest importer after the US and China, imports over 87% of the crude oil it processes. 'Economical and reliable energy supply is the top priority of India's energy security, and heavily discounted crude from Russia meets both the requirements. Our energy sourcing is diversified, involving 39 countries. We have recently increased energy imports from the US and this may go up further depending on commerciality. But our sourcing from Russia would not stop under any external pressure. We are not bound by any unilateral sanction as we follow the UN sanction,' a second person said. Energy security is India's key concern and the US is endowed with the natural resource. The proposed BTA may have some definite commitments for enhanced energy imports from the US, depending on the long-term commercial viability, the people mentioned above said. 'But the deal cannot and will not restrict India's freedom in pursuing its independent energy sourcing. We are buying crude oil from about 40 countries, including the US, the Middle East and Russia. And the policy of diversified sourcing will continue,' the first person said.

Cincinnati violence victim's GiveSendGo campaign details The GiveSendGo campaign page for Holly says that the aim is to help her recover from the attack. The proceeds will be used for her legal and medical expenses, and also to provide security and some help during her loss of work due to the attack. The page mentions Holly saying 'I never want any mother or daughter to have to endure this again. I will fight to ensure justice. So help me God.' As per the GiveSendGo page, Holly is a single, working-class mother who was 'brutally beaten unconscious by a violent mob of thugs in downtown Cincinnati.' Reportedly, she now suffers severe concussion and hemorrhaging. She cannot work now due to her injuries, and has to put up at an undisclosed secure location due to threats to her life, the page details. On top of that, she has mounting legal and medical bills. 'Every American should be able to walk the streets of their hometowns safely. In Holly's case no police were present and no ambulance arrived to help. She had to get to the hospital on her own,' the page adds. It notes that Holly is now suffering from serious injuries and trauma, and though she is tough, she should not have to face this alone. 'Your donation will help cover Holly's medical bills, lost wages and legal fees as she works to heal and ensure that this never happens again,' the GiveSendGo campaign page adds, further stating, 'Let's show Holly that she's not forgotten—and that she's not alone. Let's show the world that Americans stand together 🇺🇸.' Notably, the campaign page set out to raise $25,000 but has already raised $185,200. The campaign was created by Benny Johnson, who also shared a post on X, saying 'Holly's GiveSendGo is now the #1 trending campaign on the entire site. This happened because of you. Thank you to everyone who's donated, shared, and stood with Holly. When Americans stand united, nothing can stop us.' Holly suffering from 'bad brain trauma' Johnson also shared what he said was Holly's first message on camera since the attack. 'I want to say thank you to everyone for all of the love and support. It's definitely what's keeping me going. And you have just brought back faith in humanity. It's been very, very hard, and I'm still recovering. I still have a very bad brain trauma. God bless you all. Thank you.,' she said in the video. Four arrests have already been made in the case, and six people have been charged in the matter.
