Southern Naval Command celebrates 79th Independence Day
Vice Admiral V Srinivas, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, during his speech on the occasion, recounted the 'long and arduous journey of freedom" which laid the foundation of modern India, a Defence release said.
'The rise of the country from the ashes of colonialism to the world's largest democracy redefines India's place in global order," he is quoted as having said.
He further said that the country's armed forces play a significant role in ensuring the nation's security and termed Operation Sindoor as a defining moment in India's defence history.
Vice Admiral Srinivas said that the operation demonstrated the armed forces 'strength of jointness and strategic foresight" with the Indian Navy playing a critical role in 'asserting complete maritime dominance".
He also highlighted the SNC's contribution on various operational and training fronts, like the deployment of the Indian Ocean Ship SAGAR (INS Sunayna), successful circumnavigation as part of Navaika Sagar Parikrama 2 and multiple medical evacuations.
He also referred to the diving operations and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief missions carried out by the navy in connection with the foreign cargo vessels MV Wan Hai 503 and MSC Elsa 3 off the Kerala coast.
The vice admiral emphasised upon the importance of training to achieve a 'combat ready, credible, cohesive and future ready force", the release said.
He also urged the naval personnel to imbibe safety culture as a key enabler of operations and to rededicate themselves to the security, progress and prosperity of the nation while working towards the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047, it said.
Vice Admiral Srinivas reviewed the ceremonial parade held at the SNC after which he paid homage at the war memorial.
The parade witnessed a scintillating fly past by naval Dorniers and helicopters proudly displaying the tri colour, all the naval ships were 'dressed overall' with signal flags and the various units and establishments proudly flew the national flag as as part of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, the release said. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of using the country's 79th Independence Day address to glorify the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and V.D. Savarkar. 'It's not acceptable at all as the attempt to project the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and V.D. Savarkar as central figures in India's independence movement. Choosing Independence Day itself to glorify those who compromised with colonial powers is being seen as an insult to the freedom struggle,' Vijayan wrote on social media. He went on to point out that the RSS was banned in the aftermath of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, while Savarkar himself faced trial in the conspiracy linked to Mahatma Gandhi's murder. 'Associating them with the 'fatherhood of freedom' is a denial of history. PM Modi's Independence Day address, which indirectly valorised the RSS, was a misuse of the solemn occasion. Moreover, the decision of the Union Petroleum Ministry's Independence Day greeting card placing Savarkar's image above Gandhi's is nothing but a part of a larger conspiracy to rewrite history,' added Vijayan. 'India's independence movement was a collective battle, cutting across caste, creed, language, and religion. In contrast, the RSS distanced itself from the movement and openly opposed its ideological foundations. Instead of inclusive Indian nationalism, it promoted a majoritarian Hindutva vision,' added Vijayan. Citing history, Vijayan further pointed out that when the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949, the RSS mouthpiece Organizer editorialised that the Manusmriti should have been the guiding text instead of the Constitution. Similarly, the Hindu Mahasabha under Savarkar had even boycotted the celebrations of August 15, 1947. 'Those who turned their backs on the freedom struggle are now attempting to insert themselves into its history, while sidelining real martyrs, such as those of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising or the victims of the Wagon Tragedy. Those who call for commemorating Partition horrors on August 14 have little moral standing to lecture the nation on Independence Day,' wrote Vijayan. Vijayan ends his piece by stating that any attempt to replace the legacy of humanism and unity with sectarian hatred must be resisted collectively.

Lineman electrocuted in UP; family protests
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Kannauj (UP), Aug 16 (PTI) A 24-year-old contractual lineman died in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj after an electric shock and his family members staged a protest by placing the body at the Tirwa electricity substation, officials said on Saturday. The incident occurred on Friday in Kannauj's Pungra village when Brajesh Rathore, an electricity department lineman, took a shutdown to repair the power line, but as soon as he climbed the pole, the power supply started, and he got an electric shock, they said. He was taken to Government Medical College Tirwa, where doctors declared him dead, police said. The deceased's family members took his body to Tirwa Power House, where they blocked the road. The crowd kept creating a ruckus for two hours. During the traffic jam, police arrived at the scene and attempted to persuade the family members involved, but they refused to cooperate. They tried to remove the body forcefully, leading to a scuffle between the people who had blocked the road and the police. Women also clashed with police personnel. The police chased away the crowd with lathis and restored order after three hours. Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said Rathore, a resident of Thathiya, died due to an electric shock. After this, the family members created a ruckus by placing the body at the Tirwa power house, and some miscreants also pelted stones at the police vehicle, due to which the glass of the car broke. Some police personnel have also been injured, Kumar said, adding that the miscreants will be identified, and action will be taken. Kannauj MP and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over the lineman's death. In a post on X, he said, 'The death of an electrician in Kannauj due to electrocution is unfortunate. In such a sensitive environment of grief, the way the police have behaved with the public and especially with the woman, is very objectionable. The guilty policemen should be suspended, and punitive action should also be taken." 'We demand that a compensation of Rs 1 crore be given to the victim's family. Along with this, there is also a demand that an investigation should be done to find out the reason for the electrocution, so that such accidents do not occur in the future.
