Incidents off Kerala coast a reminder of non-traditional challenges to maritime security: Vice Admiral Srinivas

Kochi: Delivering his Independence Day mesasage, Vice Admiral V Srinivas, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief at Southern Naval Command (SNC), said that the recent maritime accidents involving multiple container cargo ships off the coast of Kerala serve as a reminder of the emerging non-traditional challenges to maritime security and the safety of seafarers. The Vice Admiral was addressing the ceremonial parade held on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day. He laid a wreath and paid homage at the SNC War Memorial. He said that the current geopolitical situation around the world is witnessing a great power rivalry with constantly changing strategic alliances. "The recent crisis in West Asia and Eastern Europe has severely affected the logistic supply chains and energy dependencies of nations across the world. Asymmetric threats, such as attacks on maritime trade and narcotics trafficking through the seas, continue to remain major challenges in the region. Closer to home, the recent maritime accidents involving multiple container cargo ships off the coast of Kerala serve as a reminder of the emerging non-traditional challenges to maritime security and the safety of seafarers," the Vice Admiral said. He added that Operation Sindoor demonstrated the strength of jointness and strategic foresight of Indian Armed Forces. Indian Navy played a critical role in asserting dominance and denied operational freedom to the adversary. Navy's ability to establish uncontested control over the seas also validated our multi-domain capabilities in a complex threat environment, he said. He added that SNC would be conducting the operational demonstration for Indian Navy involving ships, submarines, and aircraft on the occasion of Navy Day on Dec 4 at Shangumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram. The Vice Admiral also inspected the 50-man guard and reviewed the ceremonial parade, which comprised naval personnel, Defence Security Corps, NCC and Sea Cadet Corps. Bogus political donations: Income tax raids in Telangana go-betweens

HYDERABAD: Income tax (I-T) officers on Monday carried out searches at multiple locations across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, including Hyderabad, targeting three intermediaries allegedly involved in facilitating fraudulent claims of deductions in income tax returns (ITRs) through fake political donations and other fabricated expenses. The searches are part of a broader investigation into organised rackets across the country involving false filings under various I-T sections, including 80GGC. According to sources, the department identified the individuals as G Chaitanya in Tirupati, V Srinivas in Pamuru, and M Purushottam Reddy in Nizampet. They allegedly acted as intermediaries, collecting a 10% commission for filing ITRs on behalf of clients using false claims under Section 80GGC - a provision meant for genuine political donations and other sections. Investigators found that the intermediaries helped a wide section of salaried individuals, including IT professionals, LIC employees, and employees of RBI Mint in Hyderabad - claim inflated refunds based on either fictitious or manipulated donation entries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Most of the political parties involved were found to be based in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Section 80GGC abused The department's probe revealed systematic misuse of several sections of the I-T Act, including 10(13A), 80GGC, 80E, 80D, 80EE, 80EEB, 80G, 80GGA, and 80DDB. The fake claims were often filed using temporary email IDs and common IP addresses, a pattern that helped the tax authorities track down the intermediaries. These email accounts were later abandoned, which prevented taxpayers from receiving official notices or alerts. In the Chittoor case, six LIC employees were reportedly questioned and admitted to paying a commission to the intermediary in exchange for refunds generated through inflated political donation claims for the financial year 2022-23. The I-T department has also noted that growing awareness has led several employers, particularly in the IT sector, to reject dubious Section 80GGC claims during verification. This has pushed intermediaries to file returns directly on behalf of taxpayers, using falsified entries to secure higher refunds. The ongoing investigation also exposed attempts to submit fraudulent TDS returns to inflate refunds. Individuals from MNCs, PSUs, academic institutions, and the startup ecosystem were among those implicated.

India Secures International Institute Of Administrative Sciences Presidency

New Delhi: In a marker of India's internal governance reforms and the country's rising stature in global governance, the country has been elected to lead the prestigious International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS) for the 2025-2028 term. This is the first time in the nearly 100-year history of the Belgium-based institute that India will hold the presidential post. This marks a significant recognition of India's administrative evolution and reform-oriented governance, sources said. A Resounding Mandate The election took place at the Extraordinary General Assembly Meeting of the IIAS held on June 3, 2025, in Brussels. V Srinivas, Secretary of India's Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), contested the presidency and won decisively with 87 votes, defeating Austria's candidate who received 54 votes. Experts see Srinivas' election as an endorsement of India's governance model and its recent strides in administrative modernisation. He will preside over the global body that connects practitioners and scholars of public administration across continents. This will also help India understand and adopt best practices of governance reforms from across the world. India's Role in IIAS: A Longstanding Journey India has been an institutional member of IIAS since 1998, actively contributing to its mission of promoting good governance, innovation, and evidence-based policy reforms globally. Over the years, India has become increasingly active in the IIAS ecosystem, both as a participant and host of major conferences. In February 2025, India hosted the IIAS-DARPG India Conference in New Delhi under the theme "Next Generation Administrative Reforms - Empowering Citizens and Reaching the Last Mile." The event saw participation from over 750 delegates representing 58 countries, emphasising inclusive, transparent, and technology-driven governance. The win is also seen as a validation of the "Maximum Governance, Minimum Government" approach promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration. India's pitch this year focused on the need to democratise global administrative practices, bridging the North-South divide in governance models, and ensuring last-mile delivery of public services through modern tools and localised solutions. What the Presidency Means With India assuming the IIAS presidency, it is poised to shape global discourse on public administration reforms, especially those aligned with sustainable development, digital governance, and equity in service delivery. V Srinivas has said that under India's leadership, the IIAS will work to promote inclusive governance frameworks, foster cooperation, and help build capacity in developing nations through knowledge sharing, training programs, and collaborative research. A Soft Power Milestone This victory is being hailed as an important soft power milestone for India. As geopolitical influence increasingly includes thought leadership in public policy and administration, India's leadership of IIAS is likely to provides a global platform to project its governance innovations and reinforce its image as a credible partner in institutional reforms, sources said.
