March 25 - Despite losing their starting goaltender less than two minutes into the game, the Detroit Red Wings defeated the host Utah Hockey Club 5-1 on Monday night.
Alex DeBrincat had a goal and an assist and Elmer Soderblom, Marco Kasper, Austin Watson and Tyler Motte also scored for the Red Wings (33-31-6, 72 points), who won for just the third time in 12 games.
Detroit, which got two assists from Simon Edvinsson, is three points out of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Petr Mrazek made a save on Dylan Guenther 1:38 into the game, was injured and went to the locker room. That was the only shot Mrazek faced. He was replaced by Alex Lyon, who stopped 16 shots.
Guenther got the goal for the Utah Hockey Club (32-28-11, 75 points), who had won three of their last four and are six points out of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Karel Vejmelka made nine saves.
Kasper was credited with the marker that gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead 1:34 into the second period. His attempted pass from along the goal line went in off the leg of Utah's Lawson Crouse. DeBrincat got an assist for his 500th career point.
Watson gave Detroit a two-goal lead 9:51 into the third period when his mid-air tip of a shot deflected in a high arch and then down over the shoulder of Vejmelka and into the net. It was Watson's first goal since Dec. 31, 2023.
DeBrincat added an empty-net goal, his team-leading 33rd of the season, with 2:54 left and Motte scored with 1:28 remaining.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first.
Guenther opened the scoring with a power-play goal 3:46 into the game on a one-time shot from the inside part of the left circle. It was his team-leading 26th of the season.
But Soderblom tied it 1:22 later. In his return after missing a game with a lower-body injury, Soderblom capitalized on a one-timer from the inside edge of the right circle on a 2-on-1 rush off a pass from Vladimir Tarasenko.

June 7 - Spencer Carbery of the Washington Capitals was named the winner of the 2024-25 Jack Adams Award on Saturday. The honor is presented to the NHL coach who is judged to have made the biggest contribution to a team's success. While attending what he thought was a season-ending interview, the 43-year-old Carbery was presented with the award by his wife, Casey, and their children, Hudson and Vivian. . "Wow, I had no idea," a clearly stunned and choked-up Carbery said. If that weren't emotional enough for Carbery, extended family members from throughout the U.S. and Canada also were there to share in the moment. Carbery led the Capitals to a 51-22-9 (111 points) record this season as the team finished first in the Eastern Conference in his second season as Washington's coach. He becomes the fourth coach in franchise history to win the award, joining Bryan Murray (1983-84), Bruce Boudreau (2007-08) and Barry Trotz (2015-16). He is also the first person recognized as coach of the year in the ECHL, AHL and NHL. The members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association select the Jack Adams winner. Scott Arniel of the Winnipeg Jets had 249 points, followed by Martin St. Louis of the Montreal Canadiens with 66. Tigers down Cubs in matchup of Central division leaders

June 7 - Tarik Skubal pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, Spencer Torkelson hit the go-ahead homer and the host Detroit Tigers downed the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Friday to open a three-game interleague eries. In a matchup of AL and NL Central first-place teams, Skubal (6-2) allowed one run, scattered eight hits and struck out six. Will Vest got the last four outs for his 10th save. Jahmai Jones, just called up from Triple-A Toledo, also homered for Detroit. Gleyber Torres added an RBI single. Kyle Tucker had two hits and drove in the lone Chicago run. Ben Brown (3-4) gave up two runs and seven hits while striking out seven on seven innings. Chicago was limited to an infield single through the first four innings. Pete Crow-Armstrong led off the fifth with a single and Dansby Swanson followed with a double. Crow-Armstrong ran several steps past the third base bag, then tried to retreat. He was tagged out and Skubal retired the next two batters on a flyout and a strikeout. The Tigers broke through with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Javier Baez, Parker Meadows and Torres hit consecutive singles with Baez scoring on Torres' liner into center field. Chicago knotted the score in the sixth. Matt Shaw led off with a double and scored on Tucker's one-out double to right. Tucker was left stranded as Skubal set down the next two batters on a flyout and strikeout. Torkelson gave the Tigers the lead again in the bottom of the inning with his 15th homer. He pulled a 3-2 Brown fastball over the left-center field wall. Outstanding defense in the eighth allowed Detroit to hang onto the lead. Justin Turner led off with a single and Shaw bounced into a fielder's choice. A perfect throw from catcher Dillon Dingler cut down Shaw as he tried to steal second. Ian Happ then reached on a single and moved to third on a Tucker single. Vest replaced Skubal and right fielder Kerry Carpenter made a leaping grab at the wall to rob Seiya Suzuki of a two-out extra-base hit. Jones, pinch-hitting for Carpenter in the bottom of the inning, made it 3-1 with his homer to left. --Field Level Media
