BJP MLAs walk out from West Bengal Assembly; one suspended, another cautioned

The Hindu5 hours ago

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators on Monday (June 16, 2025) staged a walkout from the West Bengal Assembly after Speaker Biman Banerjee disallowed an adjournment motion on the 'present state of the education sector in the State, ranging from the SSC (School Service Commission) recruitment row, protests by jobless teachers, and the indefinite hunger strike by terminated candidates'.
The adjournment motion was moved by BJP Falakata MLA Dipak Barman and others, who claimed that the issue was of importance, and should be discussed on the floor of the House.
'All we wanted was a threadbare discussion on the unprecedented crisis in the education sector. So many eligible teachers have been rendered unemployed. They are sitting on the streets because of the corruption and irregularities committed by the ruling party leaders and Ministers. Some of whom are already in jail,' Mr. Barman told reporters after the walkout.
During the proceedings of the House, BJP MLA Manoj Oraon was suspended for the day for improper conduct during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's address. The Speaker also 'cautioned' BJP Chief Whip Sankar Ghosh.
Under her government, employment opportunities had significantly increased when compared with the previous regime, Ms. Banerjee claimed during Question Hour. She also spoke about the alleged denial of Central funds and accused BJP-ruled State governments of discriminating against Bengali-speaking migrants.
During the Chief Minister's speech, BJP MLA Sikha Chatterjee wanted to say something, to which Ms. Banerjee described her as 'a politician rejected in municipal elections having no moral right to ask questions in the House'.
'What if I would have branded her as someone defeated in Nandigram in Assembly polls and still becoming the CM after being elected in a bypoll?' the BJP MLA From Jalpaiguri later told journalists.
The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the State Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, spoke against the suspension of the BJP lawmakers.
'This suspension of the Opposition legislator is not just unfair, but a deliberate attempt by the TMC (Trinamool Congress) to silence the truth by gagging the voice of the Opposition on the floor of the Legislative Assembly,' he said. Mr. Adhikari claimed that the BJP would continue to fight for the rights of teachers, students, and doctors, and every citizen of West Bengal who deserved a corruption-free and transparent government.
This is not the first time that an MLA from the Opposition party has been suspended from the House. The LoP has himself faced suspensions over varying periods of time, adding up to almost eight months in the past four years.

Cong always betrayed OBCs: BJP

New Delhi:The BJP on Monday accused the Congress of always deceiving and betraying the Other Backward Classes following the Karnataka government's decision to junk an earlier caste survey in favour of a fresh count. Union minister and BJP leader Bhupender Yadav asked for fixing accountability, noting that over Rs 165 crore of public money was spent in carrying out the now-dumped caste survey. Yadav claimed that the Congress has a history of betraying the OBC interests as he recalled that its governments at the Centre had ignored the Kaka Kalelkar Commission report on empowering the backward classes. The party also opposed the Mandal Commission recommendations, he said. He told reporters that Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the decision for a new caste survey was not his government's but the Congress leadership's. Yadav questioned such an intervention of the party in the government's decision-making and compared it with the interference from Sonia Gandhi-headed National Advisory Council in the UPA government.

Won't politicise Ahmedabad plane crash: Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Lashingout at the BJP and JDS for their 'politics over dead bodies' brand of politics, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday said that the Congress party would not politicise the Ahmedabad plane crash. 'We won't stoop to the lows of BJP and JDS and won't try to politicise the Ahmedabad plane crash,' the DCM said while speaking to reporters at his Sadashivanagar residence. Replying to queries, he said, 'A tragedy like the Ahmedabad plane crash should not happen anywhere in the world. It is devastating to see the crash site. Thousands of people would have died had the plane travelled another 500 meters before crashing. Unfortunately, several students of a medical college are dead in the crash and many are traumatised. A Congress party delegation under the leadership of Mallikarjun Kharge met some of the injured and enquired about their health.' Asked if questions are being raised about the functioning of the Union Aviation Minister, he said, 'We refuse to do politics over dead bodies. We can talk a lot of things comparing it to how things were handled in the past, but we do not want to stoop to their level. There are many technical aspects to this crash. I am not an expert and I won't criticise the Union Aviation Minister at this juncture. It is a serious issue.' Asked about Kumaraswamy's statement that he would have given Rs 5000 under Gruhalakshmi given the amount of taxes the state government was collecting, he said, 'Happy to hear that, let him get well soon.'

Bengaluru:The Karnataka BJP filed a police complaint on Monday at the Bengaluru North Crime and Economic Offences and Narcotics (CEN) police station regarding objectionable social media posts against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A BJP delegation, led by Chief Whip in the Legislative Council N. Ravikumar and former Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao, visited the police station and handed over the complaint to the officer incharge. H. Venkatesh Dodderi, a senior advocate and BJP Spokesperson, is the complainant. The complaint is lodged against one Hadimani TF, who has posted a series of messages on social media against PM Modi. The complaint states that the accused, Hadimani, posted defamatory messages on a Facebook page against PM Modi. Apart from the defamatory messages against PM Modi, the complaint also states that the accused had targeted state BJP leaders and posted humiliating messages about them. The complaint further mentions that the accused posted a purported photograph of PM Modi lifting a woman, commenting, 'What is this? Our prime minister had deserted his own wife.' The complaint also urges the police to book the accused under the Information Technology Act, lodge an FIR, and arrest him. Former Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao stated that the police have assured them of initiating action in the case.
