CPI to examine LDF setback in Nilambur

Time of India25-06-2025
T'puram: CPI state executive asked the party's Malappuram district committee to closely examine LDF's setback in Nilambur byelection. While some CPI leaders saw this instruction to the district committee as a routine step after any election loss, there are also rumours that the party wants to check if the bypoll result signals anti-incumbency.
CPI state executive believes that if anti-incumbency was strong, UDF would have gained more votes in the constituency. Since that did not happen, the party doubts the anti-incumbency theory. The district leadership will also ascertain whether the votes polled by former Left-backed independent MLA PV Anvar reflected any anti-incumbency mood. TNN

Digital trail under scanner after Dharmavaram man's arrest for extremist links, says SP

Confirming Saturday's arrest in Dharmavaram town of Sri Sathya Sai district, Superintendent of Police V. Ratna on Sunday (August 17) briefed the media here, attesting that 42-year-old Kotwal Noor Mohammad, residing in the town for 15 years, was actively connected to the Pakistan-backed social media groups, circulating jihadi propaganda. The SP, along with Deputy SP (Dharmavaram) U. Narasingappa, disclosed that Noor Mohammad was initially thought to be a passive member, but he turned out to be an active participant in discussions intended to glorify extremist ideology. She said that the police seized the accused's mobile phone and some literature linked to the jihadi campaign in Saturday's predawn raid. 'This Dharmavaram incident is a clear proof as to how social media platforms are being mishandled and misused to negatively impact youth and gullible minds at the local level by the terrorist groups,' the SP said. Although Noor Mohammad was held on Saturday (August 16), the real investigation 'has begun now,' Ms. Ratna said, adding that the seized mobile had been sent to forensic laboratories to unravel his 'digital footprint' to map his network. She did not rule out the possibility that the accused might have acted as a recruiter or sympathiser beyond the Sri Sathya Sai district. The SP said that the case was booked under the stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Immediately after the arrest, Noor Mohammad was produced before the Kadiri court in the district and was shifted to the Kadapa Central Prison on a 14-day remand. 'We are waiting for the forensic revelations which will expose the depth of his involvement in the cross-border terrorism activities,' the SP said.

Union Minister Suresh Gopi says no need for him to reply to voters' list manipulation charges

THRISSUR: Union Minister Suresh Gopi on Sunday said there is no need for him to answer to the voters' list manipulation charges raised by the Congress and the Left parties, and the Election Commission of India would give them a reply in this regard. Gopi said he is a minister, and he is delivering his responsibilities well. While replying to reporters' questions, the BJP leader also called the persons who have raised voters' list manipulation charges against him "vanaras" (monkeys). "The Election Commission will give a reply to this (allegations). It is the EC who should answer. I am a minister. I am delivering my duties well. Otherwise, they will get a reply when they take the matter to the Supreme Court," Gopi said. He said those "vanaras" who have raised the charges could also go there to get answers. It is for the first time that Gopi was responding to the allegations of voters' list manipulation charges against him and the BJP in connection with the Lok Sabha polls last year. Sunday morning, the union minister garlanded the statue of the erstwhile ruler of the kingdom of Kochi, Shakthan Thampuran.

UDF Opposition seeks to weaponise leak of confidential complaint to CPI(M) polit bureau, accusing certain Kerala leaders of corruption

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Opposition on Sunday (August 17, 2025) sought to politically weaponise the media leak of a purported 'confidential complaint' to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] polit bureau, reportedly accusing an assemblage of party leaders from Kerala, including former Ministers, of partnering in financial shenanigans allegedly enabled by a U.K.-based business person from the State. Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, who demanded a clarification from the party and government on the veracity of the accusation, pointed out that the controversial letter, which grabbed headlines in Kerala, was adduced as evidence in a libel suit in New Delhi involving two business persons with apparent CPI(M) connections. UDF demands CM's resignation after court accuses political executive of subverting anti-corruption probe against ADGP He said the crux of the litigation appeared to be bitter feuding between two business rivals for the patronage of powerful CPI(M) leaders. 'Financial transactions gone awry might also have fuelled the disagreement, which has put the CPI(M) on the defensive in Kerala,' he added. Mr. Satheesan noted that the U.K.-based businessperson was an invitee to the CPI(M)'s 24th party conference in Madurai in April 2025 and a member of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government-sponsored Kerala Loka Sabha. Mr. Satheesan said the NRI's rival objected to the businessperson's presence at the conference and later submitted a lengthy letter loaded with accusations of financial fraud, including possible FEMA violations allegedly involving CPI(M) leaders in Kerala. Vigilance court verdict on ADGP validates Opposition's claim, says Satheesan Mr. Satheesan said the serious imputations in the letter, if true, prima facie warranted investigation under the provisions of the anti-money laundering law. 'For one, the accuser alleged in the letter that the previous LDF government routed major projects to a paper company floated by the NRI businessperson in Chennai. Is this a classic case of reverse hawala?' he said. V.D. Satheesan assures to field CMP candidates from more than one seat in 2026 Assembly elections 'I am not taking names at this juncture. However, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan owed the public an explanation. It's also mystifying how the confidential letter to the CPI(M) polit bureau ended in the possession of an NRI businessperson to adduce as evidence in court. It seems the letter's leak has brought to the fore the hidden but deeply entrenched fissures in the CPI(M) leadership in Kerala,' he stated. The CPI(M) was yet to react to Mr. Satheesan's accusations. Attempts to seek a comment about Mr. Satheesan's allegations from a few leaders were yet to yield a response.
