George Town Festival pops up in Paya Terubong this Sunday
'GTF at Paya Terubong' will take place from 6pm to 10pm at the Padang Pasar Malam, Medan Angsana, in Bandar Baru Air Itam. Admission is free.
State tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the Paya Terubong constituency has a population of 135,282, making it the most populous in Penang.
'Bringing the festival to Paya Terubong is not just about introducing the arts to the community — it is about delivering top-tier programmes to the area with the largest residential population in the state,' he said.
Wong said the evening will feature wayang kulit with live gamelan music, performances by the Temple of Fine Arts and a fire show, along with art installations and more than 20 food stalls.
'It allows every Penangite to embrace creativity and explore the arts in their daily lives, inspiring imagination, fostering connection, and bringing the arts straight to the neighbourhood's doorstep,' he said.
Visitors can also look forward to photo-worthy installation art, and food ranging from crispy walnut pancakes and snow skin mochi to grilled skewers and smoothies.
'The field will come alive with lights, music and the joyful buzz of the community. Come and be part of an evening where the arts illuminate the night sky, spark inspiration, and bring us together as one,' Wong said.

The 'Budaya@Komunity Lintang Macallum 2025', promises a variety of activities, performances and competitions. From 7am onwards, visitors can take part in arts programmes for children and senior citizens, sports, a family fun colouring contest, cultural performances, a free health screening, workshops and a patriotic-themed community singing competition. Check out the Macallum culture market and arts bazaar along with an exhibition. Tomorrow, there will be a community outreach visit and community feast from 11am to 2pm and a Jualan Rahmah from 3pm to 5pm. A community gotong-royong will be held on Sunday at 9am. The event is organised by the Penang Culture and Arts Department (JKKN) with the support of Persatuan Penjana Kreatif Seni Teater Pulau Pinang, a non-governmental organisation that supports arts. Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng said, 'This programme aims to foster the spirit of unity in our multi-racial community through activities based on local arts, culture and heritage. 'It emphasises efforts to revive the value of gotong-royong in urban communities, as well as improve the camaraderie, cleanliness and safety of residential areas through the active involvement of local residents. 'We hope people come over and enjoy the two-day event. 'Everyone is welcome and there is something for all ages,' he said. Wong said the event was much welcomed by the community at the high-density location. 'There are over 80,000 residents here in Macallum. 'The residents can enjoy the cultural shows and activities as a community. 'With the gotong-royong, it will allow everyone to pitch in and help keep the place clean as well,' he said. Penang JKKN cultural officer Ahmad Fitri Nordin said the programme's main goal was to bring together people from all walks of life. 'We will be giving out free food for around 500 people and rations as well to underprivileged families here as part of the programme. 'We want people to have a good time and feel welcomed,' he said. Ahmad Fitri said there would be fun games including old school ones like tug-of-war, running with a spoon and ping pong ball. 'These are games people do not play anymore and we want to bring them back. 'There will be a family colouring contest where we encourage parents and their children to spend quality time together without their mobile devices. 'Living the Tanjong Life' exhibition celebrates the late artist Azmi Hussin
WITH his signature buck-toothed smile on full display, Joe G cheekily dangles from an old awning outside a high window at 37, Jalan Kampung Jawa Lama, Penang. Feet spread apart like a frog, the card-carrying Penang boy looks set to burst through the glass for the start of his next adventure. Joe G, of course, is a comic character drawn by the late Malaysian artist Azmi Hussin, who passed away suddenly on March 5. After entering the local art scene in 2013, the 40-year-old was enjoying a heyday in his career, with five books published, popular murals scattered around the state, and three Malaysia Book of Records accomplishments under his belt. Tragically, however, the Butterworth native experienced chest pains on his way back from a Ramadan bazaar in Paya Terubong during the holy month and passed away en route to the hospital. At the time, he was gearing up for a number a projects, including a possible collaboration with the George Town Festival (GTF) – an annual showcase celebrating Penang's capital being recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site. After his untimely passing, three of Azmi's friends and colleagues – Goh Choon Ean, head of creative studio LUMA, art curator Ivan Gabriel and GTF festival director Jack Wong – came together with the hope of celebrating his life and work. With assistance from a few other friends, the "Living the Tanjong Life: A Tribute to the Late Cartoonist Azmi Hussin" exhibition was put together and is currently on display in and around the Hin Bus Depot arts hub in George Town. A total of four main stops make up the exhibition that starts at the entrance of Hin Bus Depot, where visitors can see a large print of Azmi's Crossing Tanjong Street artwork. Around the corner, the graffiti-styled The Great Escape adorns a wall where, nestled inside the arts centre, a hidden treasure called Run Joe Run can be picked out only by those with discerning eyes. The main part of the exhibition is housed in LUMA (a pre-war house located within the Hin Bus Depot area where the earlier mentioned cut-out of Joe G hangs outside a window) and visitors here can take a closer look at many of Azmi's creations, including original hand-drawn pieces that made up his last book, Tanjong Life: Back to the 90s. Two of his iconic works – Kampung Nasi Lemak (2023) and a signed print of Ferry From Hollywood (2024) – have also been loaned by collectors for the exhibition. On Sunday (Aug 10), Azmi's family, including his wife Marjanah Shammoon Rali and their three children, visited the exhibition for a special guided tour. Admiring the 15 large cut-outs of Azmi's cartoon characters and samples from his collection of drawings, the group toggled between smiles and tears as they celebrated the beloved artist's accomplishments over the years. 'It was so good to remember his work and efforts. "This makes me feel like he is still here and lives on through his art,' Marjanah, 39, said. Living the Tanjong Life: A Tribute to the Late Cartoonist Azmi Hussin is a joint collaboration of LUMA, Hin Bus Depot and GTF. It will run until Sunday (Aug 17) and is open to the public, free of charge.
