Community Fibre eyes mobile market launch to rival big networks
Community Fibre is exploring opportunities to start offering e-Sim services as early as this summer, before eventually rolling out virtual Sim-only contracts, in an effort to capitalise on its existing customer base of almost 400,000 through cross-selling mobile services.
An e-Sim replaces the physical Sim card in a phone and enables users to switch easily between different providers, using a cheap local network when travelling.
The new operator would initially be launched under the company's existing brand and, like other mobile virtual network operators (MVNO), would use the network of another provider rather than building its own infrastructure.
Community Fibre is one of a number of alternative network providers, or 'altnets', that have sprung up in recent years to challenge Openreach and Virgin Media O2 in building full-fibre networks.
However, its management team has ample experience in the UK mobile market. Graeme Oxby, its chief executive, previously led mobile operations for Virgin Media, which was later bought by Liberty Global and merged with O2, while Olaf Swantee, Community Fibre's chairman, was the former chief executive of EE before its takeover by BT.
Such a move would mark the latest shake-up of the UK's mobile sector, which has led to MVNOs gaining a greater share of the UK market, heaping pressure on the larger network infrastructure operators: EE, O2 and the newly merged Vodafone-Three.
Research by Enders Analysis showed that the UK's network operators lost contract subscribers for the first time last year, while MVNOs gained 1.65 million.
The research specialist attributes the rise of virtual operators to the cost of living crisis and longer handset lifespans, which has increased demand for Sim-only contracts, 'a traditional area of strength' for the MVNOs.
Vodafone-Three has said it is aiming to attract more MVNOs, a market that it has traditionally underplayed in, with only 10 per cent of virtual operators in the UK using its network.
However, altnets have also come under increasing pressure from rising costs and debt levels, as well as heightened price competition as providers attempt to recoup the huge investment in building their infrastructure by bringing more customers on to their networks.
Community Fibre, which has built out its network to 1.3 million premises, generated adjusted earnings before interest, taxes and other items of £8 million last year, which it expects to increase this year.
• VMO2 to merge enterprise operations with Daisy Group
However, it made a pre-tax loss of £119 million last year, according to its latest accounts filed at Companies House. It has said it expects to be 'cashflow positive' during the first half of next year, from an outflow of £8 million the year before.
The challenges have raised expectations of a consolidation within the sector, although merger and acquisition activity has yet to gather momentum, which some analysts have attributed to a lack of potential buyers able to pay cash for targets and institutional backers being unwilling to accept a writedown in the value of their businesses at takeout.

'Bournemouth laughing all the way to the bank' - is Ouattara wise business?
We asked for your views on Brentford agreeing a record deal of up to £42.5m for Bournemouth forward Dango you think the Burkina Faso international will improve Keith Andrews' team or are the Bees being overcharged? Here are some of your comments:George: A great acquisition, as always, from Brentford. A skilful and rapid carrier of the ball who knows how to cross into the box, which will pair well with Schade's great heading ability and Thiago's hold-up Quite an elegant solution to our problems. It looks like he would be more of a Mbeumo replacement, but the fact he can play through the middle also means that he can provide cover for losing Wissa. He seems to be an adaptable player that we will be able to develop in either role. The fee is excessive but that is what you pay for young players who are Premier League proven these days, I Nine goals, you're having a laugh! Bournemouth are laughing all the way to the If you strip it all back, the recruitment team are looking at a very small pool of players. They need someone of the right age who has Premier League experience and has a proven track record of goals. They don't come cheap and Ouattara ticks a lot of those A great purchase and a great replacement for Wissa. He can now go to Newcastle for around the same money, while we get a player who is proven and has a great His expected goals and assists per 90 minutes is high. You have to trust the club here. His flexibility across the frontline is great. Looking at the club's past business, it is hard to question the move without insider knowledge.

B&M launches huge homeware sale on furniture and prices start from £4
B&M is treating shoppers to a huge furniture sale, including sleek side tables, handy clothes rails, and stylish floating shelves for less than £10. The bargain retailer is flogging the huge selection of home essentials as part of its Special Buy sale. 7 The major discounts were also spotted by a savvy shopper on the Bargain Lovers's Facebook page. They shared a selection of photos from their local store's sale section with the caption: "At B&M" with the eyes emoji. One wrote: "Ooooo", while another added: "I also found a kids' table and two chairs today, reduced from £40 to £15." Others flocked to tag friends and family in the post to share the love. A modern bamboo and oak finish 4-tier ladder shelf is one of the special buy offerings for £20. For the foliage enthusiasts, there are sets of two plant tables for just £15. You can also pick up a Simply Picture Shelf measuring 48cm for less than a fancy coffee, retailing at just £4. For cosy evenings on the sofa with a mug of tea and a good book, B&M is selling its Simply Black Side Table for £6. There is also a nest of three coffee tables in a funky circular design, with a rustic oak finish top and black metal base. As autumn creeps in and the cosy blankets come out, stash your soft furnishings in the Simply Foldable Storage Basket Table for £10. 6 ways to get the biggest bargains in B&M There is also a Home Essentials Storage Rail with Shelving for just £8 and a Lokken 2 Cube Shelving Unit in grey for £7. The incredible prices are across all B&M stores, but remember, once items are gone - they're gone! It's also worth keeping in mind that stock varies from branch to branch. The easiest thing to do is click on the furniture sale icon on B&M's home page and select the product you like. Then scroll down to the 'find your nearest stores' option and add your postcode. As low as B&M's prices are, always remember to compare prices before buying any product as you might find it cheaper elsewhere. PriceSpy, Price Runner and Idealo are three websites well worth using to find the best price for a particular item. You can also use the Google Shopping/Product tab to do a less extensive trawl of the internet. If you're looking to find similar bargains next time you're at B&M, there is one trick you can use as well - the B&M scanner app. The app can be downloaded for free on to your smartphone via the Apple App Store or Google Play. It has a barcode price check feature which lets you scan product labels in-store to find out their true price. How else to save money at B&M The best time to get cut-price products is 10am on a Wednesday, according to one ex B&M manager. This is when staff slash items to as little as 10p to clear excess stock and make way for new products. It's worth signing up to Facebook pages dedicated to hunting for bargains from B&M and other discounters too. Some worth joining are B&M Bargains, Extreme Money Saving Deals and More and Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group. 7 7
