Carlyle teams up with Citi to invest in fintech lenders
June 12 (Reuters) - Investment firm Carlyle Group (CG.O), opens new tab has partnered with U.S. banking giant Citigroup (C.N), opens new tab to provide asset-backed financing to fintech lenders, the companies said on Thursday.
As part of the partnership, Carlyle and Citi will share market intelligence, and explore co-investment and financing opportunities, the companies added.
The rise of fintech lending, fueled by convenient application processes and flexible credit, is pushing traditional financial heavyweights to gain exposure to the space.
Facing surging demand from borrowers, fintech lenders are also increasingly turning to investment firms for capital.
"Demand for scalable and tailored asset-backed financing solutions from fintech lenders has increased as they mature and seek efficient ways to fund their growth," said Akhil Bansal, head of asset-backed finance at Carlyle.
Asset-backed financing is a type of lending secured by a pool of assets, and is one of the fastest-growing segments of the private credit market.
Citi also has a $25 billion private credit partnership with Apollo (APO.N), opens new tab.

US agency streamlining self-driving car exemption reviews
WASHINGTON, June 13 (Reuters) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Friday said it was streamlining reviews of requests filed by automakers seeking to deploy self-driving vehicles without required human controls like steering wheels, brake pedals or mirrors. NHTSA has authority to grant petitions to allow up to 2,500 vehicles per manufacturer to operate on U.S. roads without required human controls but the agency has spent years reviewing several exemption petitions without taking action. Automakers have expressed frustration with the agency's slow reviews of autonomous vehicles. Under the law, fully self-driving vehicles do not need NHTSA approval if they have required human controls. Manufacturers must demonstrate vehicles without human controls provide an equivalent safety level and exemptions are in the public interest. In 2018, GM (GM.N), opens new tab petitioned NHTSA to deploy up to 2,500 cars without steering wheels or brake pedals on U.S. roads. In 2020, GM withdrew the petition. GM in 2022 again sought NHTSA approval to deploy vehicles without human controls. GM withdrew the petition in October. Ford (F.N), opens new tab in 2023 withdrew its self-driving petition filed in July 2021 with NHTSA, citing its decision to close its self-driving venture Argo AI in 2022. Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab tentatively plans to begin offering rides on its self-driving robotaxis to the public on June 22, CEO Elon Musk said this week, but those vehicles have required human controls.

If ultimate range is a top priority, the Lucid Air still has a commanding lead, as it can hit 512 miles. As usual, the wheel sizes affect range. The new 19-inch Magnetite wheels on the Model S are needed for the 410-mile range. With the striking 21-inch Velarium wheels, the range drops to 380 miles. The Plaid has the same wheel sizes, with respective ranges of 368 and 328 miles. Speaking of the Model S Plaid, it gets new body styling, including a sportier lower front fascia and a rear spoiler. Somehow, Tesla has freed up more third-row and cargo space in the Model X, but by how much isn't clear. Both EVs have a new color called Frost Blue Metallic, which costs $2,500. Small Changes, Big Price Increase None of these changes are especially monumental, but that doesn't mean pricing hasn't gone up. Every Model X and Model S derivative is now $5,000 more expensive. These are the new prices: Model S All-Wheel Drive: $84,990 Model S Plaid: $99,990 Model X All-Wheel Drive: $89,990 Model X Plaid: $104,990 For less than the Model X Plaid, you can get the Cyberbeast, a much newer model with comparable performance, much better towing capabilities, and tech like steer-by-wire. That's assuming you don't need the Model X's third row, of course. While the changes are perhaps not that interesting, Tesla doesn't sell nearly as many Model X and Model S units as it does for its cheaper models, so the company probably did not want to invest too much in updating these EVs.
