Chinese e-commerce sites offer discounts of up to $351 on Apple's latest iPhones
BEIJING, May 14 (Reuters) - Chinese e-commerce platforms are offering discounts of up to 2,530 yuan ($351) on Apple's latest iPhone 16 models, an effort to spur sales as first-quarter shipments by the U.S. tech giant fell further in its second-largest market.
The step comes as Chinese online retailers increasingly vie for cost-conscious consumers in a slowing economy, with price cuts taking centrestage ahead of the annual "618" shopping festival on June 18, one of the country's largest.
JD.com (9618.HK), opens new tab, is selling the iPhone 16 Pro with storage of 128GB at 5,469 yuan, down 2,530 yuan from Apple's official price of 7,999 yuan, Reuters checks showed on Wednesday.
The iPhone 16 with 256GB storage is listed at 5,469 yuan, or a drop of 1,530 yuan from its official price of 6,999 yuan, including government subsidies.
Alibaba's (9988.HK), opens new tab Tmall marketplace is offering comparable discounts, selling the iPhone 16 Pro with 128GB at 5,499 yuan, or 2,500 yuan off Apple's official price, after applying coupons that include government subsidies.
Reuters was unable to ascertain if the discounts were being offered by Apple itself or the platforms.
Apple has previously cut prices on its latest models to boost sales during the "618" festival, said Will Wong, a senior smartphone analyst at IDC.
"Apple is repeating its sales promotion strategy for the shopping event last year," Wong added. "It's cutting prices on iPhone 16 Pro so that it can enjoy China's state subsidies on digital products."
Selective discounting has featured in the company's China pricing strategy, whether through its own promotions or independent cuts by online platforms and authorised resellers.
In January, Apple offered rare discounts of up to 500 yuan on its own website and in past years Chinese e-commerce platforms have also rolled out similar deals.
Apple, JD.com and Alibaba did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The U.S. tech giant's smartphone shipments in China dropped 9% in the first quarter, while domestic competitors Xiaomi (1810.HK), opens new tab and Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL) posted gains of 40% and 10% respectively, market data from IDC shows.
Smartphones are among the key targets of China's broader consumption stimulus plan, with local governments in major cities such as Beijing, the capital, offering subsidies of up to 500 yuan for handsets cheaper than 6,000 yuan.

New Zealand cuts funding to island nation over China ties
New Zealand has halted millions of dollars in funding to the Cook Islands, citing agreements that the small Pacific nation recently signed with China. The Cook Islands, a nation comprising 15 islands in South Pacific Ocean, is self-governing but shares a military and passports with New Zealand. In February, the Cook Islands signed several agreements with China, including a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement, and approved a number of investment projects ranging from transport networks to telecommunications. While no security cooperation was discussed, at the time experts noted that the deals would deepen China's foothold in the region as it continues to make inroads in the Pacific. The deals were not well received at home, triggering protests and a vote of no confidence against the prime minister Mark Brown, which he managed to survive. Beijing defended the partnership, saying that the deals were not meant to antagonise New Zealand and Mr Brown also said that they did not 'replace our longstanding relationships with New Zealand, Australia and others, but rather complements them, ensuring that we have a diversified portfolio of partnerships.' However, New Zealand appears to have been blindsided by the agreements and is now stopping NZ$18.2 million (£8.1 million) until 'the Cook Islands government takes concrete steps to repair the relationship and restore trust'. A spokesperson for New Zealand's foreign minister Winston Peters said that the 'breadth and content' of the agreements and a lack of consultation with Wellington beforehand prompted a review of the funding. The agreements illustrated 'a gap in understanding' between the two governments 'about what our special relationship of free association requires,' which included prior consultation on dealmaking, said the spokesperson. Mr Brown seemed eager to quash any concern in parliament on Thursday morning, claiming the funding had 'not halted, it's paused' and downplayed the amount in question. The Cook Islands' Foreign Affairs Ministry responded by saying it was 'determined to address [the issue] as a matter of urgency' and it 'highly values' New Zealand's development assistance. The now-frozen funds are part of NZ$200 million, which New Zealand had directed towards the Cook Islands over a three-year period. The money was set to go towards health, education and tourism sectors on the islands. The timing could also prove awkward as New Zealand's prime minister Christopher Luxon is in China this week and will be meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping. Mr Brown seemed to hint at some hypocrisy by pointing out that Mr Luxon was also looking to increase trade with China during his visit. The Cook Islands leader said he trusted any agreements Mr Luxon made in Beijing would 'pose no security threat to the people of the Cook Islands'.

China likely to keep lending rates steady after May cut, trade truce
SHANGHAI, June 19 (Reuters) - China is widely expected to keep its benchmark lending rates unchanged at a monthly fixing on Friday, a Reuters survey showed, after Beijing rolled out sweeping monetary easing measures a month earlier to aid the economy. A framework agreement covering tariff rates between Washington and Beijing has raised optimism the world's two largest economies can get business activity back on track, reducing the urgency for additional easing measures. The loan prime rate (LPR), normally charged to banks' best clients, is calculated each month after 20 designated commercial banks submit proposed rates to the People's Bank of China (PBOC). In a Reuters survey of 20 market watchers conducted this week, all respondents expected both the one-year and five-year LPRs to remain steady. Most new and outstanding loans in China are based on the one-year LPR, while the five-year rate influences the pricing of mortgages. Last month, China lowered LPRs for the first time since October, while major state banks lowered deposit rates as authorities cut borrowing costs to help buffer the economy from the impact of the Sino-U.S. trade war. Market participants said key rates now move in tandem with the seven-day reverse repo rate, which serves as the main policy rate. "That means any adjustment to the LPR should follow changes to the seven-day reverse repo rate," said a trader at a brokerage, noting it will also take some time to gauge the impact of stimulus measures introduced in May. However, a string of disappointing economic data, including slower-than-expected credit growth and deepening deflationary pressure, has underscored the need for more stimulus. "Near-term economic stabilisation is dependent on reaching a trade deal with the U.S., which will take precedence over more policy stimulus," said Ho Woei Chen, economist at UOB. Chen expects the seven-day reverse repo rate to be reduced by 10 basis points in the fourth quarter of this year and guide LPRs to lower by the same margin. "The prospect of another 50-basis-point cut to the reserve requirement ratio (RRR) remains in place," she said.
