Six die within hours in Koraput medical college, government orders probe
Sources said five patients, aged 27 to 45, suffering from cancer, stab and head injuries, died during treatment on Tuesday night while another died on Wednesday morning. Four of the five were admitted to the ICU of surgery department and the remaining two were in the wards.
Family members of the patients admitted to the ICU alleged that they developed serious complications minutes after a nursing staff administered an injection and died in a quick succession.
The deceased were identified as Sukra Majhi (Semiliguda), Rukmi Penthia (Ambaguda), Phulamati Majhi (Kalahandi), Bhagaban Paraja and Jagannath Pujari (Borigumma) besides Bati Khara (Koraput).
The deceased included a road accident victim, a cancer patient and two liver patients, besides two others, who were admitted following a stabbing incident.
Sources said the ICU patients were administered Norepinephrine injection, which usually helps stabilise blood pressure. 'My brother died nearly 15 minutes after he was administered the injection,' alleged Jagannath's brother.

Work on Jeypore economic corridor to start soon: CM Majhi
BHUBANESWAR/ JEYPORE: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday announced that construction of the six-lane Bhubaneswar-Berhampur-Jeypore economic corridor will be started soon. On the second day of his visit to Koraput district, Majhi also inaugurated the 650-bed hospital at Saheed Laxman Naik Medical College built at a cost of Rs 280 crore. Addressing a function on the occasion, the chief minister said the economic corridor will play a vital role in all-round development of Koraput district by boosting connectivity to different parts of the state. The expansion of the hospital of the medical college will be a boon for the people of the district and neighbouring region as they will no longer have to travel to other cities for availing quality treatment and health services. The new hospital will benefit the people of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and also the neighbouring areas of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, he said. Announcing that all vacancies in medical and allied posts at the SLN MCH will be filled up soon, Majhi said a cancer hospital is also being built on an area of two acre adjacent to the hospital at a cost Rs 41.15 crore. Emphasising focus of his government to provide best of healthcare in every district, the CM said there are 12 government medical colleges in the state at present and four more are coming up in Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Nabarangpur districts. He also said the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has greatly benefitted the people of the state with more than 3.46 crore covered under the scheme along with Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana (GJAY). The government has already released Rs 900 crore in lieu of cashless treatment provided to the people in best of hospitals, he said. Under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana, 8,644 senior citizens aged above 70 have received free treatment worth Rs 35.60 crore. In Koraput district alone, over three lakh AB-PMJAY and GJAY cards have been distributed, with 9,006 people enrolled under the senior citizens' scheme, he added. The chief minister said four private hospitals in Koraput district are empanelled under the ABPMJAY-GJAY, enabling local access to cashless treatment. Health and Family Welfare minister Mukesh Mahaling was present among others.

Healthcare and education sectors got a boost under BJP-led Odisha govt: CM Majhi
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Sunday, asserted that his government has prioritised qualitative growth in the healthcare and education sectors since assuming power in the state, government officials. CM Majhi made the statement during the inauguration of a 650-bedded facility, built at a cost of Rs 280 crore, at the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH) in Koraput district. "Our government's duty is to provide corruption-free governance along with development. After our government assumed power, we prioritised qualitative growth in the education and healthcare sectors. We filled the long-pending vacancies in the healthcare sector on a priority basis. The state currently has 12 medical colleges and soon four new medical colleges will be set up in Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Nabarangpur districts," the Chief Minister said. He also added that a six-lane road will soon be constructed, connecting the Jaypore-Berhampur-Bhubaneswar Economic Corridor. He also assured that all the vacant healthcare professionals posts at the SLNMCH will be filled soon. In his speech during the event, CM Majhi also said that the state government is taking all the measures to ensure that the residents of Koraput district don't require to visit far off places for healthcare services and face any hardships. He also claimed that people from Koraput and districts like Malkangiri, Rayagada in Odisha and areas in neighbouring states Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will get benefited by the medical college. The Chief Minister added that the people will get all the advanced treatment facilities at the newly constructed 650-bedded hospital inaugurated on Sunday. CM Majhi said that along with all the advanced diagnosis facilities the medical college will also have a special oxygen plant so that critical patients don't face the shortage of oxygen. The state government has sanctioned Rs 41.15 crore for the construction of an advanced cancer hospital on the land measuring 2 acre adjacent to the SLNMCH in Koraput, he added. CM Majhi highlighted the achievements of his government, the state and Koraput in particular, under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and Gopabandhu Jana Arogya Yojana. He said that within just a one-year period in government, significant progress has been made across all sectors. "These efforts will be further accelerated in the coming days. Ours is a government of the people. Our government is putting efforts to create a 'Samruddha Odisha' by 2036 and make Odisha a leading state in a developed India by 2047. The report further highlighted the need for a consistent supply and maintenance of medical equipment through the Odisha State Medical Corporation Limited to ensure uninterrupted hospital services. Among the new initiatives proposed was the establishment of a centre of excellence for sickle cell anaemia at SLNMCH. Additionally, a 200-seater rest shed for patients' attendants was suggested, with a proposal to mobilize Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for its development.
