2nd Real Madrid star leaves Barcelona clash with injury

Yahoo16-05-2025

La Liga giants Real Madrid have on Saturday evening been dealt not one, but two blows on the personnel front.
This of course comes amid the ongoing action in the finale of the Copa del Rey.
Real Madrid are currently locked in action with arch rivals Barcelona, having made the trip to Seville with silverware on the line.

As things stand, Los Blancos are deadlocked at two goals apiece, with a potential penalty shootout looming.
As alluded to above, though, their efforts to secure what would be a sorely-needed Clásico victory have come at a cost, and a potentially heavy one at that.
First, inside the opening 10 minutes this evening, the returning Ferland Mendy limped off with a fresh fitness concern.
And the Frenchman was later followed in departing proceedings prematurely by Vinícius Jr.
Late in the 90 at La Cartuja, wide-man Vinícius pulled up following a heavy challenge involving Jules Koundé, before immediately calling for a substitution.
It now remains to be seen if either player is facing up to any kind of extended spell on the sidelines.

"Really tough day" for Fabio Quartararo as Yamaha struggles at Aragon MotoGP

The low-grip Aragon track was a prime suspect to expose the deficiencies of Yamaha's YZR-M1 machine and unfortunately for Fabio Quartararo and the Japanese manufacturer the issue was in the spotlight. There was no shortage of sympathy for the luckless Frenchman whose Yamaha machine snapped and jumped seemingly on the exit of every corner around the track during Friday practice. Advertisement To add insult to injury, Quartararo's Yamaha was joint-slowest through the speed trap, almost 10 km/h (6 mph) slower than Brad Binder's KTM. The inability to put power down on the tarmac was undoubtedly a key factor in the speed difference. With frantic gesticulation while out on track, it was clear that Quartararo wasn't pleased. He left the garage as soon as the session was over, preferring to cool down before he dived into the debriefs. At least Quartararo could see the funny side when he spoke to the media, as he hops from one end of the grid to the other this weekend. 'We almost made the pole position on the other side [at the back of the grid],' joked the Frenchman initially. 'A really, really tough day especially with the soft tyre. We don't understand what really happened with electronics and stuff but not the best day and especially [since] we don't understand why. 'The problem is that you never know when to expect it and in our case, it is not the best when you are on the bike fully in angle and you never know if you're going to lose it on the edge or on the exit and I didn't make any lap. The four laps I did was all cutting and making mistakes so we will have to find a solution.' 'The set-up is good," said the 2021 MotoGP champion. "We have to just understand why when we change rubber it completely changes our bike, and our electronics become crazy.' Yamaha team director Massimo Meregalli was equally disappointed in the session understanding the problem suffered by his riders as Quartararo and Alex Rins finished the Friday in 18th and 15th respectively. 'They are suffering the same problem, it's the rear grip,' Meregalli said. 'They are losing the rear a lot. Every time they try, they lose the rear. So they have to try to understand how to at least reduce the slide and improve the performance. Honestly I did not hear any comment because Fabio left to go and get changed but I think it was very easy to understand.' There's a lot of work for the Yamaha team tonight to go over the data to see why the soft tyre is causing so many problems. Quartararo will be praying they find a golden fix for the bike's woes. Crystal Palace open contract talks with Jean-Philippe Mateta

Crystal Palace have initiated contract negotiations with striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to BBC Sport. The 27-year-old Frenchman, whose current deal runs until June 2027 following a recent 12-month extension, has been linked with a move to Manchester United and Olympique Marseille this summer. Advertisement Mateta enjoyed a standout 2024–25 season, netting 17 goals and playing a pivotal role in Palace's historic FA Cup triumph—the club's first trophy in just over three decades. With Palace set to compete in the UEFA Europa League next season as a result of the aforementioned cup triumph, the Eagles are looking to tie down their first-choice striker. Palace are aiming to build a competitive squad capable of maintaining momentum next season, and keeping Mateta is central to that plan. Talks between the club and the player's representatives are believed to be progressing positively despite Mateta reportedly seeking a salary bump to around £90,000 per week, which would put him on par with Palace's highest earners. Advertisement Mateta's journey at Palace has been far from straightforward. Initially signed on loan from Mainz in January 2021, his early time in South London was marked by inconsistent performances and limited minutes under former managers. Since Oliver Glasner's appointment in February 2024, the Frenchman has flourished, thriving under a more structured and attack-minded approach. With a strong physical presence, sharp positioning, and vastly improved finishing, Mateta has become almost indispensable for Palace. His partnership with Eberechi Eze and Ismaila Sarr has been key to the team's attacking identity. However, Mateta ended the last campaign without a goal in any of his last six games across all competitions and will be keen to get back on the scoresheet in Palace's pre-season tour.

Watch: Barcelona star's major mistake costs his country dear in World Cup qualifier

A headline member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona was responsible for a moment to forget on the international stage in the early hours of Friday. The player in question? Ronald Araújo. Advertisement Stopper Araújo was in from the off earlier today, as Uruguay locked horns with Paraguay in a crunch qualifier for the 2026 World Cup. Inside the closing ten minutes of action, Marcelo Bielsa's troops found themselves trailing by a goal to nil, aware that the next goal would likely prove decisive in the fixture's outcome. And as much subsequently went the way of Paraguay, in no small part owing to a high-profile error on the part of Araújo. After receiving the ball inside his own penalty area, the under-fire Barcelona star took far too long to sort his feet out, allowing Julio Enciso to nick the ball away, before Araújo took the Brighton man down with a clumsy challenge. Enciso went on to dust himself down before dispatching the ensuing spot-kick, sealing a 2-0 Paraguay triumph. Advertisement Uruguay, as a result, remain 5th in the CONMEBOL table amid the ongoing World Cup qualification campaign, set to slip to 6th in the case of Colombia besting Peru later this evening.
