Joburg gets ready to thrive at 2025 SPAR Women's Challenge Jozi
As one of the country's most beloved women-only road running events, this year's race promises even more inspiration, empowerment and community spirit, forming part of the currently running My Jozi My SPAR campaign. Plus, one lucky participant will drive away in a brand-new Hyundai Exter – just by entering and joining on race day.
The theme for 2025, #Twenty20Thrive, is a celebration of resilience and women thriving in their journeys, careers, and communities – regardless of life's challenges.

Entries cost R180 for the 5km, R180 for the 10km (without a temporary ASA licence) and R240 (with a temporary ASA licence), and each entry pack includes the official new moisture management race T-shirt, race number and the My Jozi Challenge Magazine.

Mosiako and Xaba win Foskor Half Marathon
PHALABORWA – The F21 Foskor Half Marathon, this year sanctioned by Athletics South Africa (Asa) Road Running Championships, delivered excitement, records, and unforgettable moments on Saturday, July 26. The event, hosted at the Foskor Community Centre, drew a massive crowd of enthusiastic community members who cheered on South Africa's best athletes in a joyous atmosphere. Thabang Mosiako and Glenrose Xaba emerged as the stars of the event, clinching national titles in the men's and women's half marathon races and walking away with impressive cash prizes. Both athletes were rewarded with R50 000 from Foskor and an additional R50 000 from Asa for their victories. M O S I A K O Mosiako, representing Athletics Central North-West, blazed through the course in a record-breaking time of 01:02:47, finishing well ahead of his competitors. 'I am overwhelmed and excited. I want to thank everybody who supported me, including Tumisang Monatlala, my wife Thandi Mosiako, and Nedbank Running Club. Last year was very tough with multiple injuries, but now I am back with a bang. The support from the people of Phalaborwa gave me the strength to push through,' said Mosiako. Lesotho's Thomas Lebese followed in second place in the open category with 01:04:00, while Reghan Magwai finished third in 1:04:16, claiming the silver medal in the national championships. Ultra-distance runner Onalenna Khonkhobe took home the bronze with a time of 01:04:17. X A B A In the women's race, Glenrose Xaba, running for Athletics Gauteng North (AGN), continued her dominance over the 21km distance, finishing in 01:10:03, smashing the previous course record held by former world record holder Elana Meyer. Her performance secured her sixth national title in the half-marathon. 'I am feeling very excited and happy. Last year, I had too much on my schedule and could not compete, but this year I returned because it is also part of the Asa championships. The support we receive from Foskor F21 is incredible. They believe in us, and that motivates us to keep running. The love from the community also pushes us to perform at our best,' said Xaba. Neheng Khatala of Lesotho was second in the open race, clocking 01:13:28. Cacisile Sosibo earned silver in the national championship with a time of 01:15:14, while Samantha Coetzer rounded off the podium, taking bronze in 01:22:52. In addition to the main 21km race, the event featured 10km, 5km, and mile races, creating a day of athletic celebration for runners of all levels.

Calls grow for Athletics South Africa board to resign over money scandal A storm is brewing in South African athletics as a group calling itself 'concerned athletes and administrators' calls for the immediate resignation of the Athletics South Africa (ASA) board during a fiery press conference in Milpark on July 28. Citing deep-rooted governance failures and alleged misuse of funds, the group, led by ASA board member Dorah Mgwevu, athletics administrator Ernest Moikangoe, and athlete Keneilwe Sesing, issued a bold ultimatum that ASA President James Moloi and his board have seven days to step down or face protest action. 'We, the concerned stakeholders, administrators, civil society organisations and citizens of South Africa, demand the immediate resignation of the ASA leadership, including the CEO and entire board of directors,' said Moikangoe. ALSO READ: South African youth lead the way in international cue sports and athletics The veteran official said this follows recent allegations that Moloi had used ASA funds for personal gain. This was revealed last month during an oversight hearing by Parliament's Sports, Arts and Culture portfolio committee. The hearing quizzed Moloi about using the federation's credit card at various taverns and liquor stores. 'The findings presented in parliament are a national embarrassment and betrayal of public trust. They paint a picture of an organisation in complete disarray where corruption, neglect of athletes, and gross abuse of funds have become institutionalised. 'We can no longer tolerate a leadership that has repeatedly failed to safeguard the integrity of sport in South Africa.' The group demands the appointment of an interim committee and the launch of a full forensic investigation by the Special Investigating Unit into ASA financial activities from 2020 to 2025. ASA is meant to serve athletes – not to fund parties, taverns and corrupt deals,' Moikangoe said. Should the ASA board fail to resign within seven days, Moikangoe said the group will stage a protest at ASA headquarters and petition World Athletics to suspend the federation until their demands are met. Mgwevu echoed Moikangoe's sentiments, saying Moloi should step aside to allow SASCOC's investigation into ASA's financial irregularities – including whether funds were misused – to proceed without his interference. 'The president must step aside. We are aware of the ongoing investigation. 'How do we have this investigation when the accused person still has access to information and witnesses? Will this be a fair investigation? 'We appeal for Moloi to step aside and allow this investigation to take place fairly.' 'Last year, we launched in July, so there is not much of a delay if we are launching in August. Some trustees were expelled from the athletics administration," they said. 'Now, clearly, they are fighting that expulsion with ASA but, at the same time, they were the signatories to the trust bank account. After the expulsion, what do you expect a normal person to do? You expect them to hand over but they didn't do so. 'Second, there were some transactions in the trust bank account that needed some explanation, and a forensic investigation was initiated. There is a group from certain clubs who are saying the race should not happen, but it will happen.' The source said the CGA board being dissolved will not affect the preparation for the November race in Nasrec, Johannesburg. 'Runners should not panic. In 2023, the race happened. It was not staged by the trust, but by the clubs. Last year was the same thing.' CGA general manager Mandla Radebe said the body is confident the race will go as planned this year. 'According to us, the race is going ahead. We are not panicking yet because we are still in July, maybe they are planning for August to launch,' Radebe said. SowetanLIVE
