Drunk KZN taxi driver sought after causing accident and fleeing

EMPANGENI - KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma has vowed to take tough action against drunk and reckless drivers who flee accident scenes. This comes after a major crash on the R34 between Empangeni and Eshowe, where an allegedly heavily intoxicated taxi driver caused a collision and ran away. READ: SA's road carnage | Probe into two KZN accidents underway The minibus, carrying family members traveling from Empangeni to eMasangweni, reportedly tried to overtake a Ford Ranger before clipping its rear and forcing both vehicles off the road and down an embankment. Duma says the driver's actions amount to a hit-and-run and could have claimed the lives of up to fourteen passengers. He wants the suspect to face prosecution and a sentence of up to nine years in prison or a fine of R180,000. READ: Truck driver in the N3 deadly crash on the run This is the second case this month involving a drunk driver disappearing after a crash. Duma is urging the public in Empangeni and Eshowe to assist police with any information that could lead to the driver's arrest.

Urgent action needed: Freedom Front Plus calls for disaster status in Centurion sinkhole crisis

A recent sinkhole in Jade Avenue, Lyttelton, caused by tree roots piercing an asbestos water pipe, has prompted the Freedom Front Plus to intensify its petition for the sinkhole issues in Tshwane to be declared a disaster area. Image: Supplied The Freedom Front Plus has intensified its campaign to petition the City of Tshwane to declare Region 4 a disaster area due to the severe sinkhole problem, following a recent sinkhole development in Centurion. The party has collected 3,500 physical signatures by visiting schools and engaging with the community, and has also launched an online campaign to gather more signatures. FF Plus PR councillor Wesley Jacobs emphasised that the petition process is transparent, as no ID information is being collected. "I submitted all the information to the council," he said. He cautioned that other political parties are now copying their approach, starting petitions on th same issue, but alleged that these parties are exploiting the issue for political gain by collecting ID information. According to him, there are currently 64 sinkholes in Centurion, highlighting the urgent need for rehabilitation and infrastructure maintenance. A recent sinkhole in Jade Avenue, Lyttelton, emerged when tree roots pierced an asbestos water pipe, resulting in an underground water leak. Jacobs explained that the primary causes of the sinkholes in Centurion are water and sewage leaks on dolomitic soil. The FF Plus is demanding urgent action from the City of Tshwane, calling for the declaration of Region 4 as a disaster area to access necessary funds for rehabilitation and infrastructure replacement. "Decisive action should be taken immediately to prevent the loss of lives," Jacobs said. This demand comes after Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Jacob Mamabolo recently suggested that implementing technology to detect potential leakages could be a more effective solution to the sinkhole problems plaguing Tshwane and Merafong City. Mamabolo urged the two municipalities to work together to tackle the sinkhole problem and provide documentation to support their bids for national funding. A roundtable discussion on sinkholes is planned for the end of July, bringing together experts and stakeholders to find long-term solutions. Meanwhile, Tshwane has budgeted R14.7 million to address the sinkhole crisis, but it's woefully inadequate, as estimates suggest R180 million is needed to fix over 60 sinkholes. Jacobs said: 'The Freedom Front Plus will keep pressuring the Metro to declare it a disaster area so the necessary funds can be obtained from the national and/or provincial disaster funds, as the Metro lacks the resources to replace outdated infrastructure and rehabilitate sinkholes.' ‘System is so cruel': OMG 2 director disappointed after his Shahid Kapoor film on Shivaji gets shelved, wonders if his ‘Rs 180 cr film was not enough' proof

Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava has been the biggest Hindi hit of the year so far and until Saiyaara came along, it seemed like Chhaava's throne might remain untouched. While that is yet to be determined, another film based on the life of another Maratha king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has been shelved. Amit Rai, of OMG 2 fame, was going to direct the film and Shahid Kapoor was attached to the project. Amit blamed the 'cruel system' for his film getting shelved and said that despite his last film doing really well, his hard work of five years has been destroyed. In a chat with Mid-day, Amit said, 'The system is so cruel. Even if you have proved your mettle with a R180 crore film [OMG 2], it's not enough.' Amit did not explain why his project was shelved but expressed his disappointment with the systemic problems of the film industry. 'How is a director supposed to work here, under these systems of casting, production, star, and management? You live with a story for five years, and within minutes, somebody writes a five-pager, pointing out what is wrong and what is right in the film,' he said. Exclusive | Salman Khan's Bigg Boss 19 fees revealed, actor to charge between Rs 120-150 crores for three months In 2024, it was reported that Amit's film would be produced by Telugu film producer Dil Raju, and Shahid was already attached to the project. At the time, he was also going to star in Ashwatthama, which was later put on hold due to budget constraints. A post shared by Riteish Deshmukh (@riteishd) Meanwhile, Riteish Deshmukh has already announced his film, Raja Shivaji, based on the life of Shivaji. Riteish is directing the film and will also play the lead role here. The film also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Amole Gupte, and Genelia Deshmukh.
