DA condemns Emfuleni waste crisis amid escalating resident protests
The DA has intensified its criticism of the Emfuleni Local Municipality's deteriorating waste management, labelling the situation a 'complete collapse' and a direct threat to public health. This condemnation follows a recent protest where residents dumped uncollected garbage at the Sedibeng District Municipality offices, expressing frustration over months of neglected waste collection.
Dady Mollo, the DA's Central Constituency Political Head, highlighted the dire conditions: 'Streets are strewn with garbage, bins are overflowing, and illegal dumping is rampant. This is not just unsightly—it's a serious health hazard, especially for children, the elderly, and those in vulnerable areas.'
The DA attributes the crisis to poor governance and lack of accountability within the ANC-led municipality. In response, the party proposes immediate reinstatement of regular waste collection, investment in waste management infrastructure, community awareness programs on responsible waste disposal, and strict consequence management for officials and contractors failing to meet their obligations.
The recent protest at the Sedibeng offices underscores the residents' desperation. According to reports, the garbage had been left to rot in neighborhoods for over five months, prompting residents to take drastic action. The Vaal Business Cooperation commented on the incident, noting the sudden appearance of a refuse truck to clean up the protest site, a stark contrast to the prolonged neglect in residential areas.
The DA says it is continuing to apply pressure through council and oversight mechanisms to ensure residents receive the dignified services they are entitled to. Mollo emphasized, 'The people of Emfuleni deserve dignity and proper service delivery. We will not stop until these rights are realized.'

KABUL, Afghanistan - The Taliban government on Saturday urged Afghans hoping to emigrate to the United States to instead return to Afghanistan, after Washington tightened entry conditions. US President Donald Trump this week announced a travel ban targeting 12 countries, including Afghanistan, which his proclamation said lacked "competent" central authorities for processing passports and vetting. Commenting on the ban on Saturday, Prime Minister Hassan Akhund urged Afghans to return to their country, saying they would be protected even if they worked with US-led forces in the two-decade fight against the Taliban insurgency. "For those who are worried that America has closed its doors to Afghans... I want to tell them, 'Return to your country, even if you have served the Americans for 20 or 30 years for their ends, and ruined the Islamic system'," he said in a speech marking the Eid al-Adha holiday, broadcast by state media. "You will not face abuse or trouble," he said, making reassurances that the Taliban Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada had "granted amnesty for all". After surging to power in 2021, Taliban authorities announced a general amnesty for Afghans who worked with the Western-backed forces and government. However, the United Nations has recorded reports of extrajudicial killings, detentions and abuses. In the past four years, the Taliban government has imposed a strict view of Islamic law and restrictions on women which the UN says amount to "gender apartheid". Afghans fled in droves to neighbouring countries during decades of conflict, but the chaotic withdrawal of US-led troops saw a new wave clamouring to escape Taliban government curbs and fears of reprisal for working with Washington. The United States has not had a working embassy in Afghanistan since 2021 and Afghans must apply for visas in third countries, principally Pakistan which has recently ramped up campaigns to expel Afghans. Since Trump returned to the White House in January, Afghans have gradually seen their chances of migrating to the United States or staying there shrink. Trump administration orders have disrupted refugee pathways and revoked legal protections temporarily shielding Afghans from deportation starting in July.

Dr Tshenuwani Farisani remembered as a dedicated public servant
JOHANNESBURG - Anti-apartheid activist and reverend Dr Tshenuwani Farisani is being remembered as a dedicated servant of the people, who committed his life to uplifting disadvantaged communities. President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the eulogy at Farisani's funeral, held at the University of Venda in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, on Saturday. Farisani passed away on Thursday at the age of 76, after battling an undisclosed illness. ALSO READ: Ramaphosa pays tribute to anti-apartheid activist and reverend, Dr Tshenuwani Farisani As a long-serving member of the African National Congress (ANC), he represented the party in Parliament and went on to become the speaker of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature in 2004. In 2022, the Farisani Foundation was established, with a focus on education, economic empowerment, agriculture, technology and information. The foundation has played a vital role in helping children in remote rural areas access quality education. President Ramaphosa said Farisani was a visionary who was committed to fighting poverty and empowering poor communities. 'Dean Farisani soon became attracted to liberation theology, and its message that the true Christian faith demands active resistance to all forms of oppression and solidarity with the poor.'

Shamila Batohi faces pressure to clarify NPA interference claims

Image: Ayanda Ndamane / Independent Newspapers Outgoing National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shamila Batohi is facing mounting pressure to provide details of her claims that there is political interference in the work of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). In an interview this week, Batohi had said: 'The NPA has been infiltrated by people who do not have the rule of law at heart. 'We are having internal challenges; some prosecutors may not be aligned with the vision of really fighting for the rule of law in this country.' Calls for Batohi to be summoned to Parliament to provide explanations follow a difficult period for the NPA during which the authority has bungled a number of high-profile cases. The latest was the Free State High Court declaring the extradition of former Free State premier and ex-ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule's personal assistant, Moroadi Cholota, from the US unlawful as it did not have a valid and lawful request by the Justice Ministry. As a result of Judge Phillip Loubser's ruling, Cholota cannot face trial in the controversial R255 million tender to audit and replace asbestos roofs in the province alongside her former boss and several other individuals and companies. The NPA plans to appeal against the judgment. Another recent prominent case that intensified pressure on Batohi, who is reportedly due to retire when she turns 65 in January, was the acquittal of Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso of multiple charges of rape, human trafficking, and racketeering in April. On Friday, the EFF wrote to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and Xola Nqola, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, demanding an urgent parliamentary debate on Batohi's allegations of infiltration in the NPA. Additionally, the EFF wants the portfolio committee to schedule an urgent meeting and was not calling for punitive or reactionary action. 'This is not a casual institutional complaint. It is a constitutional red flag of the highest order. An assertion from the NDPP herself that the NPA has been infiltrated should send shockwaves throughout every organ of state,' the party said. The EFF warned that the assertions have direct consequences for the rule of law, the integrity of South Africa's criminal justice system, the fight against corruption and gender-based violence, and public trust in the country's democracy. The urgent meeting should be held on Tuesday, June 10, and also requested Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi to be invited to attend, provide policy-level responses and inform the committee of the department's position and possible interventions on the matter, according to the EFF. It requested Didiza to exercise her authority under the National Assembly's rules to approve an urgent debate on 'the implications of the NDPP's public statement regarding infiltration of the NPA and the threat it poses to South Africa's justice system, rule of law, and constitutional democracy'. ActionSA parliamentary leader Athol Trollip said the party was alarmed and called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to remove Batohi immediately. He said the NPA has failed to prosecute Ramaphosa for not declaring foreign currency stolen at his Phala Phala farm in 2020, which was later stolen, fugitive self-proclaimed Malawian prophet Shepherd Bushiri, and secure the extradition of the fugitive Gupta brothers, among others. 'The NPA has become a refuge for politically connected individuals, a place where accountability is avoided, justice is delayed, and prosecutions collapse with shocking regularity. Under Batohi's leadership, the NPA reels from one scandal to the next,' added Trollip.
