BJP seek LG's intervention as mandatory Urdu test for revenue official recruitment sparks outrage in Jammu

JAMMU: The mandatory requirement of knowledge of Urdu for recruitment as naib tehsildars (revenue officials) in
Jammu and Kashmir
has triggered uproar in the Jammu division, with J&K BJP brass meeting LG Manoj Sinha on Thursday to press for scrapping the move.
The J&K Services Selection Board (JKSSB) issued a notification on June 9 for the recruitment of 75 naib tehsildars, with Urdu language test designated compulsory to qualify for the post.
The notification has youths and organisations up in arms in the Jammu region, where students mostly study Hindi or Punjabi. Students and BJP-affiliated organisations have held protests decrying the move and accusing the Omar Abdullah government of depriving Jammu's youths of employment opportunities.
J&K BJP president Sat Sharma and leader of opposition in the assembly Sunil Sharma on Thursday called on the LG and sought his intervention. Pointing out that the UT had five official languages — Hindi, English, Kashmiri, Dogri and Urdu
—
they said making the knowledge of one of these languages mandatory violated the constitutional principles of equal opportunity and administrative impartiality. The move created an unfair barrier as it was disadvantageous to aspirants from the Jammu division, they stressed.

BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa described the eligibility criterion as a 'conspiracy to block Jammu youth from securing govt jobs'. Former deputy CM Kavinder Gupta of the BJP demanded an immediate review of the decision and called for ensuring a level playing field to all candidates, irrespective of their regional and linguistic backgrounds.
Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) activists held a massive protest in Jammu against what they termed a discriminatory and biased provision.
ABVP, too, organised protests at all district headquarters in Jammu.
Lashing out at the Omar govt, head of J&K chapter of BJYM, Arun Prabhat, said: 'The imposition of Urdu is a deliberate attempt to exclude deserving candidates from Jammu. Such regional discrimination will not be tolerated and we demand an immediate rollback.'
A controversy over the issue in the past had prompted the J&K administration to decide in Nov 2022 that Urdu would not be mandatory for the naib tehsildar recruitment test, whenever these are held. Since then, JKSSB had not advertised any vacancies for the post or initiated the recruitment process.
However, J&K Urdu Coordination Committee, Kashmir wing, had at that time expressed disappointment over the decision.

Ola, Uber not coming to Goa: CM Sawant
With Goa's traditional taxi operators raising concerns regarding the draft transport guidelines, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said cab aggregators like Ola and Uber would not come to the state and that all stakeholders would be taken into confidence before 'resolving the issue'. Speaking to the media after a meeting with Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, Sawant said, 'On the taxi issue, Jit and Michael and others came to meet me. People should not create confusion. These are the guidelines brought out for aggregators. Ola and Uber are not coming here. We have to put a system in place. We will take everyone into confidence before resolving the issue. All the stakeholders — taxi owners, hoteliers and MLAs — will be taken into confidence. Ola, Uber are not coming.' Last month, the Goa government published draft guidelines — Goa Transport Aggregator Guidelines, 2025 — outlining a regulatory framework for app-based taxi and bike taxi operators including licensing fees, tariffs and incentives, to regulate app-based transport aggregators. Taxi unions across the state have threatened to stage protests, saying the move will pave the way for entry of private app-based taxi aggregators and threaten their livelihood. The transport department has sought suggestions and objections, before the guidelines are notified. Last Monday, hundreds of taxi operators queued outside the transport department office in Panaji and submitted their written objections to the draft guidelines. Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar said the taxi operators fear that their businesses will shut down if private app-based aggregators enter the state. 'We had a meeting with the Chief Minister to discuss these concerns. A delegation of taxi operators was also present. The Chief Minister has assured that app-based aggregators from outside the state will not be allowed. But at the same time, the system has to be streamlined and digitised and the fares need to be uniform for all,' said Arolkar. Michael Lobo, BJP MLA from Calangute, said the taxi operators have demanded that these draft guidelines be kept in abeyance. 'It has been assured that a meeting of MLAs from constituencies in the coastal belt and all the other stakeholders will be called before a final decision is taken on the guidelines,' Lobo said.

TMC, BJP spar in Bengal Assembly over minorities commission Bill
Kabir, a former IPS officer, accused the BJP-led Centre of 'discriminating against minorities, particularly Muslims,' citing legislations like the Waqf (Amendment) Act and alleging 'vigilantism over food, dress, and religious practices' in BJP-ruled states. During the debate, TMC Debra MLA Humayun Kabir praised the Mamata Banerjee-led government for its 'slew of pro-minority development measures' through the Minorities Commission. Kolkata, Jun 13 (PTI) The West Bengal Assembly on Friday witnessed heated verbal exchanges between ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs during a discussion on the West Bengal Minorities Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2025, presented by Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya. His remarks, especially references to 'Modi acolytes,' triggered strong protests from BJP members. Chief Whip Shankar Ghosh demanded that Kabir's comments be expunged, claiming they were derogatory and unparliamentary. Kabir, however, denied having made any objectionable remarks, saying, 'I did not make any derogatory references to anyone.' Responding during her wrap-up of the debate, Minister of State for Finance, Land and Land Reforms Chandrima Bhattacharya said, 'Many abusive and crude comments are regularly made by BJP leaders in public.' Referring to a viral video, she added, 'A senior BJP leader was seen hurling a chappal at a turbaned police officer on Thursday. BJP should not lecture others about using objectionable words.' Speaker Biman Banerjee, when approached by reporters in his Assembly chamber, said, 'I will examine the comments made by Kabir before responding to the BJP's demand to expunge.' On the video referenced by Bhattacharya, he told PTI, 'The video turned out to be true. I fact-checked its veracity.' During the debate, BJP's Shankar Ghosh also commented on the new vice-chairman's post being proposed under the amended Act. 'The post should be filled by a person belonging to a linguistic minority, and not by a political appointee, but rather an eminent public figure who can rise above partisan politics,' Ghosh said. Indian Secular Front (ISF) MLA Naushad Siddique, while supporting the Bill in principle, said the Minorities Commission 'has not lived up to expectations.' He questioned why the Commission 'does not lodge suo motu complaints' when incidents against minorities are reported. Citing a recent incident in Behala where a Muslim woman was allegedly humiliated, Siddique claimed, 'Neither the council nor police acted until my organisation intervened and filed a complaint.' The Speaker asked Siddique to submit documentary proof of the incident, to which the Bhangar MLA responded, 'I will provide evidence soon.' Bhattacharya challenged Siddique, asking, 'How many complaints has your organisation filed so far? You must also bring such incidents to the notice of the Commission.' She added, 'The Commission cannot be equated with a police station, but any complaint of wrongdoing — especially against women from minority communities — will be looked into seriously.' Bhattacharya clarified that the Commission covers 'six religious and seven linguistic minority communities,' and said, 'We do not follow any religiously divisive policy in any of our social welfare funds.' She assured that the vice-chairman, when nominated, 'will be an eminent public figure from a minority community, not an active politician,' in line with the suggestion made by Ghosh. The Amendment Bill empowers the state to accord minority status to religious, linguistic, and ethnic groups and proposes to evaluate the implementation of welfare schemes and monitor development progress of minorities. Earlier, Ghosh also raised the issue of damage to a heritage house in Bangladesh associated with Rabindranath Tagore. Responding, Bhattacharya said, 'Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already drawn the Prime Minister's attention to the matter and urged him to take it up with the Bangladesh government.' 'Since this is an international issue, the state will support whatever stand the Centre formulates,' she added, stressing that the Bengal government 'has taken every step to preserve and beautify the birthplace and residences of luminaries like Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam located in our state.'
