Bank officer loses RM241,700 in online vehicle scam
The victim, a 52-year-old man, fell prey to a fraudulent advertisement for a used four-wheel-drive vehicle on Facebook.
Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor stated that the incident began on July 4 when the victim responded to the advertisement.
He communicated with the supposed seller via WhatsApp and was asked to provide a copy of his identity card along with an advance payment.
'Between July 9 and 21, the victim made 40 transactions to eight different accounts, totalling RM241,700,' Azli said.
The scam escalated when the suspect demanded an additional RM31,000 for alleged fingerprinting costs at the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.
The victim realised he had been deceived and lodged a police report yesterday morning.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama

The request was issued Tuesday (July 29), following a noticeable rise in edited images, inflammatory content and inappropriate commentary circulating online. These actions have caused insults affecting the honour and dignity of individuals, including politicians and members of royalty. The ministry urged all social media users to conduct themselves with integrity, responsibility and respect, and to adhere to ethical standards of public discourse. It stressed that its goal is to maintain public order and uphold peaceful online environments, free from incitement, hate speech, racism or ethnically charged rhetoric. The statement advised the public to avoid sharing or producing unverified information that could lead to confusion, anger, violence, hatred or racial discrimination. It also called on journalists, content creators and the public to verify information with official sources — particularly on sensitive issues such as the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict — before sharing it. Additionally, it asked people to refrain from posting doctored images or false content that could be viewed as defamatory, especially toward royal institutions. Lorry Owner Fined For Trying To Move Logs Without Removal Pass
KOTA KINABALU, July 29 (Bernama) -- The owner of two timber lorries was fined RM1,600 after they were found trying to move 59 logs without a removal pass in an operation in Kampung Randagong, Ranau at 1.30 am last Wednesday (July 23). Sabah Forestry Department (JPS) chief conservator of forests Datuk Frederick Kugan said the JPS, in collaboration with the General Operations Force (GOP) through 'Operation Khazanah', had detained the two lorries which were found to be moving between 7 pm and 7 am without permission. He said further investigation by the JPS confirmed that all the logs transported by the lorries were from the Sipitang district, and all royalty payments totalling RM4,732.70 had been paid to the state government.
