Pittsburgh Regional Transit to close Mount Washington Transit Tunnel for repair work
Starting Feb. 23, crews will replace the tracks, restore the roadway inside the tunnel, and repair the overhead electric lines that power light rail vehicles. The tunnel will reopen when the work is complete and the tracks pass inspection, according to a news release from PRT.
The tunnel is a key connection between South Hills Junction and Station Square Station for many commuters.
Because of the construction, several changes will be put in place for light rail and bus riders.
Changes to light rail service
On weekdays, Red and Blue Line rail cars will detour through Allentown via Warrington and Arlington avenues. A temporary stop will be available on Warrington Avenue at Allen Street.
The Silver Line will operate only between Library Station and Washington Junction to reduce congestion in Allentown. Riders can transfer to Red and Blue Line trains at Washington Junction.
The Red, Blue, and Silver Lines will all operate via Allentown on weekends.
A temporary Subway Local rail car will operate between Station Square Station and Allegheny Station for the duration of the closure. Additionally, Station Square Station will be included in the "Free Fare Zone" from Feb. 23 until the project is completed.
Changes to bus service
Some bus routes will also be temporarily detoured. Most affected routes will travel inbound via Warrington and Arlington avenues and outbound via the Wabash Tunnel.

It is one of the 11 federal holidays in the U.S. Walt Disney World Resorts Two of Disney World's theme parks will host nighttime fireworks shows: Spaceship Earth will be illuminated in red, white and blue at night on July 4. Additionally, DJ entertainment will occur throughout the night at Magic Kingdom on July 3 and 4 in Frontierland, near Cinderella Castle and Tomorrowland. Celebrate the USA's 250th birthday aboard this once-in-a-lifetime patriotic cruise Universal Orlando Resort Universal Orlando will celebrate the Fourth of July with special entertainment at its theme park and Universal CityWalk. It adds that the fireworks are synchronized to patriotic music. "Enjoy a firework & drone show spectacular on SeaWorld's large central lake with inspiring music synced to beautiful fireworks in celebration of America. View from areas like Bayside Stadium or find a spot along the water," its website states. Legoland Orlando LEGOLAND Florida is bringing back its "Red, White & Boom" party for July 4 through July 5, with star-spangled activities, DJ Dance parties, and a fireworks show. The park will extend its usual hours for the show. For its fireworks, officials note that it is extra special to view with 3D viewing glasses, which transform the sparks into exploding Lego bricks. To make things even sweeter, the park will offer a limited-time patriotic paleta, which features "layers of tangy blueberry yogurt, creamy vanilla yogurt, and juicy fresh strawberries." Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Guests at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay will enjoy an extended patriotic fireworks finale to its "Wild Skies: The Summer Nights" drone show from July 4 through July 6. Flight delays at America's major airports, once a source of anxiety, now represent opportunities for unexpected adventures. Some travelers secretly hope for a delay that provides a chance to step beyond the terminal and discover the natural wonders, such as a hiking trek through bamboo forests near Atlanta or a journey through a wildlife refuge in Denver. When flight cancellations and hours-long delays threaten to derail a trip, these nine hiking trails, all within 15 miles of major U.S. airport hubs, offer a refreshing alternative to overcrowded food courts and uncomfortable gate seating. Ohio invites everyone to America's 250th birthday bash
America turns 250 years old a year from Friday, and the folks planning Ohio's once-in-a-generation celebration say everything is on track. Why it matters: The birthday party will last all year and all 88 counties are on the guest list after passing resolutions to participate. The semiquincentennial is meant to be a unifying moment as we celebrate our state and its place in U.S. history. Case in point: This time next year, the Ohio History Center will be one of several sites hosting a community picnic to bring people together. Catch up quick: Planning kicked off back in 2022. The festivities will include signature statewide events, as well as one-off celebrations in participating communities. The Ohio legislature is funding much of the programming and some has already begun. "We're thrilled at how Ohioans are really embracing this," America 250-Ohio executive director Todd Klesmit tells Axios. The latest: Expect to see 250-Ohio marchers in Thursday's Red, White & Boom parade, stepping off at 5:30pm, and find activities at the Ohio State Fair later this month, inside the Lausche Building. Some of what's planned for 2026: 🗓️ Monthly celebration themes, including "Ohio firsts," farms, fairs, arts and sports. An estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War veterans are buried in Ohio. This effort will honor them by mapping their final resting places with the public's help. 🚂 250 Buckeye Train: Take a train ride on the historic Pennsylvania Railroad to the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum in Eastern Ohio.
