300 public parks in Cairo open doors to citizens for Eid al-Fitr celebrations

CAIRO – 31 March 2025: Cairo's parks are welcoming visitors today on the first day of Eid al-Fitr (the Feast of Breaking the Fast).
The Egyptian capital is home to approximately 300 public parks, all of which have opened their doors to citizens for the three-day holiday after undergoing extensive maintenance throughout Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when Muslims worldwide fast from the dawn to the sunset, and upgrading their facilities to better accommodate the public.
For instance, the International Park in the Nassr City has witnessed a high turnout. Entertainment programs have been prepared for children, including DJ performances, puppet shows, and a train that tours the park.
Major General Hesham El Gammal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Specialized Parks Project in Cairo, said that these activities are being implemented across all parks, approximately 300 in total, with the International Park being a highlight.
The miniature zoo at the International Park has also been prepared to welcome children, along with the park's two amusement parks and water parks.

Wooden Coffins, Ostraca, Ancient Mudbrick Wall Unearthed in Luxor
Ali Abo Dashish _ Ahmed Emam Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has revealed two significant archaeological discoveries in Luxor, following a visit by Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, who inspected the progress of ongoing excavation and restoration projects in the ancient city. During his visit, Dr. Khaled toured the newly restored Southern Chapels of the Akh-Menou temple at Karnak, a project completed in cooperation with the Egyptian-French Center for the Study of the Temples of Karnak (CFEETK). The chapels, now open to visitors for the first time, represent a major step in the ministry's efforts to expand cultural tourism and enhance visitor access to previously closed archaeological sites. In his remarks, Dr. Khaled hailed the French-Egyptian collaboration and emphasized the project's importance in preserving Egypt's rich heritage. The restoration involved structural and fine conservation work, detailed documentation of religious scenes, and efforts to improve accessibility for visitors, including special ramps for people with disabilities. According to Mohamed Abdel-Badie, Head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector, cleaning efforts within the Southern Chapels unveiled vivid scenes showing royal rituals dedicated to the god Amun. The walls of the main corridor depict the "Heb Sed" festival—an ancient jubilee celebration—held by Pharaoh Thutmose III. A lengthy foundation inscription describes the structure as a 'temple of millions of years,' dedicated to Amun-Ra and the deities of Karnak. In turn, Dr. Abdel-Ghaffar Wagdy, Director of Luxor Antiquities and co-director of CFEETK from the Egyptian side, highlighted the high preservation state of the chapels. Much of the structure's walls and ceilings remain intact, and many of the vibrant wall paintings retain their original brilliance, making it one of Karnak's best-preserved monuments. In addition to restoration efforts, Dr. Khaled visited excavation sites where Egyptian archaeological teams have made remarkable discoveries. At Al-Asasif in the Qurna area, archaeologists uncovered a collection of small, undecorated wooden coffins, believed to belong to children. The coffins were found in poor condition. A specialist in human osteology and ancient wood is expected to analyze the remains to determine the coffins' date, as well as the age, gender, and cause of death of the individuals, shedding light on burial practices in the area. Mohamed Abdel-Badie noted that the team also discovered several ostraca—inscribed pottery and limestone fragments—alongside two partially damaged conical seal impressions bearing the title 'Supervisor of the House, Khonsu.' A shaft nearby contained blue faience shabti figurines, and a chamber with a central column showed traces of plaster, although it lacked inscriptions. Meanwhile, in the Nag' Abu Asba area near Karnak, another Egyptian mission uncovered the remains of a massive mudbrick wall dating back to the reign of King Menkheperre, a ruler from Egypt's 21st Dynasty. Each brick was stamped with the king's name and that of his queen. The site also revealed a sandstone gate, multiple workshops, and industrial installations, including furnaces for casting bronze statues and several Osirian bronze figurines of various sizes. Among the most significant finds at the site was a large beer-making facility, which archaeologists believe points to the area's role as an industrial zone in ancient times. Numerous tools, amulets, and coins were also found, offering new insights into the economic and religious life of the period. These discoveries, according to the Supreme Council of Antiquities, reinforce Luxor's position as a living museum and continue to deepen the global understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization. Sharm El-Sheikh Becomes 1st Egyptian Green City to Join Global ICLEI Network
Ahmed Emam Egypt marked a significant milestone in its environmental journey as Sharm El-Sheikh was officially declared the first Egyptian green city to join the ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, a global network dedicated to sustainable urban development. The announcement was made by Minister of Environment0 Yasmine Fouad during a high-level ceremony attended by South Sinai Governor Khaled Mubarak, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Guemar Dieb, and Eng. Mohamed Aliewa, Director of the Green Sharm Project. Fouad described Sharm El-Sheikh's inclusion in ICLEI as the culmination of a years-long transformation, positioning the city as a national and regional leader in environmental sustainability. She traced the city's green journey back to 2018, when Egypt hosted the UN Biodiversity Conference, which brought international attention to the rich ecosystems of South Sinai and highlighted the country's commitment to integrating local communities in the management of natural reserves. Momentum grew further when Sharm El-Sheikh hosted the COP27 UN Climate Conference in 2022. Under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directive, the city underwent sweeping upgrades, implementing nearly 40 environmental projects to prepare for the summit and to serve as a model for sustainable tourism. The minister emphasized that the success of sustainability initiatives hinges on public participation, noting that 'the human being is the foundation of sustainability.' She called on citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits such as recycling, resource conservation, and the use of renewable energy, stressing that environmental change begins with individual choices. The city's green credentials include major investments in solar power, sustainable transport, and waste management. Among the standout achievements are the installation of solar panels generating 51 megawatts of electricity, the construction of 145 kilometers of bicycle lanes, and the implementation of shared bike systems and electric buses. Community engagement has also played a vital role, particularly in solid waste management and biodiversity protection. Governor Khaled Mubarak hailed the ICLEI membership as a national accomplishment and a direct result of Egypt's strategic vision for sustainable development. He underscored that the green transformation of Sharm El-Sheikh aligns with South Sinai's sustainable development strategy, endorsed by President El-Sisi in 2024, which aims to position the city as a global hub for green tourism. 'Sharm El-Sheikh is no longer just a tourist destination; it is becoming a blueprint for how cities in the region can thrive economically, socially, and environmentally,' Mubarak said. He pointed to the 'Green Sharm' initiative as a turning point, driven by five integrated pillars: clean energy, waste reduction, sustainable transport, water conservation, and biodiversity. He also highlighted future plans, including a ban on single-use plastics in 50 hotels, increased support for local initiatives, and expanded partnerships with the private sector and international donors. So far, the city has attracted more than \$19.7 million in green financing, with further investments expected. In turn, Eng. Mohamed Aliewa, head of the Green Sharm project, described the city's ICLEI membership as a pivotal step toward its transformation into a sustainable city. He noted that Sharm El-Sheikh is now the fourth Arab city to join the international network. Aliewa also unveiled an online portal listing all certified green hotels, dive centers, and eco-friendly facilities — a tool designed to guide tourists seeking sustainable travel options. UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Guemar Dieb praised the city's achievement and Egypt's broader commitment to sustainability. He described Sharm El-Sheikh's transformation as a model for international green development, noting that the city's hosting of COP27 brought global attention to its environmental efforts and solidified its status as a beacon of climate leadership. Dieb applauded Fouad's role as Egypt's ministerial envoy to COP and her efforts in coordinating across government agencies to raise environmental standards in the city. Egypt's tourism sees 25% surge in early 2025, defying regional challenges
Despite facing persistent geopolitical challenges in the region, Egypt's tourism sector has experienced a notable increase in visitor arrivals, as reported by the Egyptian Cabinet. According to data from the Egyptian government's Media Center, tourist arrivals to the country saw a 25 percent increase during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. The center reported that Egypt welcomed 15.8 million tourists in 2024, marking an increase of over 21 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels. These figures are considered record-breaking, falling within an ambitious strategy to boost the tourism sector. It clarified that these record numbers were achieved despite geopolitical challenges in the region, indicating that Egypt continues to solidify its position as a leading tourist destination. The center also noted that these steps are part of a comprehensive strategy based on providing an inclusive tourism experience, developing human capital, and maximizing returns for citizens under the slogan 'Egypt… Unrivaled Diversity.' The Egyptian government's strategy for advancing the tourism sector aims to achieve economic security in tourism by maximizing direct returns for citizens, focusing on human resources, and enhancing the skills of employees within the ministry and the tourism sector as a whole.
