Strong monsoon, rising wages, and govt spending fuel rural economy recovery: Report

New Delhi: India's rural economy is showing early signs of a broad-based recovery, bolstered by a strong start to the monsoon season, a rebound in rural wages as inflation eases, and a renewed push in government spending, according to a report by the Ambit asset management firm. The report added that these positive developments are expected to lift rural demand, improve agricultural productivity, and provide momentum to overall economic growth in the coming quarters. "As we head into FY26, green shoots are emerging. A strong start to the monsoon season, a resurgence in rural wages (driven by easing inflation), and higher government spending are setting the stage for a broad-based rural recovery," the report added. The report highlights that the monsoon has begun on a promising note in FY26, with June rainfall at 105 per cent of the long-period average (LPA). Unlike previous years that were marred by erratic patterns, this year has seen more uniform and timely distribution, critical for sowing across pulses, oilseeds, and coarse cereals. Kharif sowing is already 8 per cent ahead YoY as of July-end. After years of stagnation, rural wages (both agri and non-agri) are seeing signs of revival. Real wage growth turned positive in mid-FY25, aided by falling inflation and increased government infrastructure push (roads, housing, Jal Jeevan Mission). The report added that MGNREGA demand is also moderating, indicating improved job availability. This pickup in wage growth is boosting rural liquidity and helping rebuild household savings, enabling higher spending on FMCG, durables, and low-end 2Ws. The last three years have been particularly challenging for rural India, marked by wage stagnation, weak demand across sectors such as FMCG, retail, and two-wheelers, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reverse migration disrupted rural employment, and agricultural distress intensified as input costs (fertilisers, diesel, pesticides) surged. The pandemic severely strained rural India. Rising inflation, stagnant wages, and muted demand significantly impacted household savings and consumption. Between 2020 and 2023, rural inflation climbed to 7.5 per cent, led by agricultural distress from erratic monsoons, unseasonal weather events, and rising input costs. Farm incomes were squeezed as market prices for many crops remained subdued, while the cost of essentials like diesel and fertilisers soared. The FMCG sector, a key barometer of rural demand, experienced a marked slowdown in earnings between Financial Year (FY) 2020 and FY24. The agri-inputs sector -- comprising fertilisers, crop protection chemicals, and seeds -- has been under earnings pressure over the last few years, mirroring the broader stress in rural India. The report added that between FY20 and FY24, earnings growth for several players slowed considerably, as they were weighed down by weak farm incomes, erratic monsoons, input cost inflation, and inventory destocking.

US, China agree to 90-day tariff truce, easing trade tensions

Washington, DC: The United States and China have agreed to extend their tariff truce for 90 days, CNN reported, citing an executive order signed by President Donald Trump. This move averts an immediate surge in duties that could have severely impacted trade between the world's two largest economies. Notably, the tariffs on Chinese goods would have skyrocketed to 54 per cent from 30 per cent, while Chinese tariffs on US exports would have jumped to 34 per cent from 10 per cent. In a joint statement with the US, China confirmed the 90-day trade truce extension and said it would maintain the 10 per cent tariffs it has imposed on American goods during that period. The Joint statement follows bilateral negotiations held in Sweden last month, it said. The extension comes after Trump imposed a slew of "reciprocal" tariffs on trading partners around the world, which have raised the United States' effective tariff rate to levels not seen since the Great Depression, as per CNN. According to CNN, higher tariffs on Chinese goods, America's second-largest source of imports, would have almost certainly raised the costs many American businesses and consumers could pay -- or already are paying -- because of increased import taxes Trump has enacted. After meeting in Sweden in July, Chinese negotiators went as far as to say that a deal was reached. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, both of whom attended the meeting, disputed that, saying nothing was final without Trump's word. "We'll see what happens. They've been dealing quite nicely. The relationship is very good with President Xi and myself," Trump had said on Monday. A White House fact sheet on the extension said trade discussions with China have been "constructive" and quoted Trump saying: "We're getting along with China very well."

Global economy in major problem if Russian oil exports disrupt, India's impact limited to $5bn annually: Report

New Delhi: If Russian oil exports were to be disrupted, it could create a major problem for the global economy, however, for India, the impact is expected to be limited, according to a report by Bank of Baroda. The report stated that according to estimates, the effect on India's oil import bill would be around USD 5 billion annually, an amount considered manageable given the country's overall trade size. It stated, "For the world economy there could be a greater problem if there is a full embargo on Russian oil exports". The report mentioned that India's crude oil sourcing pattern has changed significantly in recent years. Before the Ukraine war in 2021-22, Russia's share in India's crude oil imports was modest. By 2024-25, however, Russia emerged as the largest supplier, followed by Iraq with a 19 per cent share, Saudi Arabia with 14 per cent, and the UAE with nearly 10 per cent. Together, these four countries accounted for almost 80 per cent of India's oil imports in 2024-25. The United States' share, which had been high in the past, fluctuated and stood at a lower level in recent years. In terms of prices, there is considerable variation among suppliers due to factors such as logistics, quality, and purchase timing. In 2024-25, Iraq offered the lowest average price at USD 76.83 per barrel, followed closely by Russia at USD 78.39 per barrel, about USD 1.56 lower than India's overall average price. The June 2025 data showed the average import price for India at around USD 69 per barrel, with Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Nigeria, and Brazil offering prices below USD 70 per barrel. Interestingly, Russian oil was not the cheapest that month, as Kuwait and Iraq sold at lower rates. India imported around 244 million tonnes of crude oil in 2024-25, roughly 1.8 billion barrels. Every USD 1 increase in oil prices translates to about USD 1.8 billion in additional import costs. Given that June's average price was only USD 2.50 above Russian levels, the report highlighted that the potential impact would be absorbable. It stated, "The overall impact hence would not be more than USD 4.5-5 bn on an annual basis. Given that overall imports of goods were USD 720 bn, this would not be a significant increase which cannot be absorbed". Globally, the stakes are higher. Russia accounts for about 10 per cent of global oil supply, and a complete embargo could push prices above USD 80 per barrel in the short term which as per report will strain economies worldwide until alternative supplies are arranged.
