Beloved south coast theme park set to reopen after nearly two years
Adventure Wonderland Theme Park in Bournemouth first opened in 1992 with Alice in Wonderland -themed rides and rollercoasters.
Rising costs forced the park to shut its outdoor attractions in 2022, before the family theme park temporarily 'closed for a restructure' at the end of 2023.
At the time, the park near Bournemouth Airport said: 'The current trading climate and steep increase in key costs across the board is not conducive to the existing theme park model.'
A formal planning application has now been submitted to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council to improve the existing theme park facilities.
Adventure Wonderland's transformation into a smaller adventure park will feature a maze, mini-golf and a go-karting track among its attractions.
Park bosses also plan to reopen the cafe and education facility, replace some former ride areas with outdoor play spaces and repurpose existing buildings.
Organisations, including Diverse Abilities and Discovery Village, have operated out of the theme park since it closed two years ago.
A statement from the planning application said: 'The aim of this proposal is to create a site which is better adapted for use by the occupants of Merritown, Discovery Village and Diverse Abilities.
'All of these tenants want to create sustainable spaces which focus on creative outdoor spaces which are stimulating environments with outdoor play, sensory gardens, water play, and utilise the existing external spaces and buildings on site', reported the Bournemouth Echo.
Adventure Wonderland initially opened as a pick-your-own fruit farm, eventually welcoming around 180,000 visitors to its tea cups, log flume and 'Wild Thing' indoor play area in the year before it closed.
There is currently no confirmed reopening date, but the park announced hopes to start the 'new adventure in 2025' last September.
In the 2024 update, the park shared on Facebook that the former Adventure Wonderland site was 'undergoing an exciting redevelopment '.
It added: 'With the Alice in Wonderland maze at the heart, we are working on a lovely new concept with children's play areas, sensory and wildflower gardens and beautiful outdoor spaces for children and adults to enjoy quality time together.'

There is an alarming sense of cogs being wound in this prison drama by Ed Edwards. It is set in a fancy new Manchester nick where conditions are uncommonly good: a 25-day riot in the notoriously crowded Strangeways has fast-tracked the introduction of a softly-softly regime. There is one man to a cell, so tensions should be minimised, and only troublemakers are subject to frequent searches. Yet every time Edwards introduces a new inmate, he takes us one step closer to catastrophe. It is like a laboratory experiment in which a mad scientist adds unstable chemicals to a test tube and turns on the Bunsen burner. The steadiest element is Frankie Donnelly, a recovering addict who is in for three-and-a-half years for importing drugs disguised as bars of chocolate. On his side is an even temper, a typewriter and a history of political activism; beyond that, he is at the mercy of his fellow inmates. They include Kenny, a vulnerable and volatile victim of sexual abuse; Robert, a 'white Muslim' drug lord; Bron, a former British soldier with a lethal form of PTSD; and Tommy, who may or may not be an IRA operative. Placating one could trigger another. A chain reaction seems inevitable. Amusingly, Edwards plays against the tension as well as leaning into it. With the audience on tenterhooks, a whimper can be as much fun as a bang. None of these men is precisely the monster you expect. There is humanity, tenderness and care even in this brutal environment. The playwright could find no better interpreter than Mark Thomas, extending a relationship that began with England & Son, a play that managed to make a link between juvenile offending and colonialism. Strident and demonstrative, he powers his way through the script under the direction of Charlotte Bennett for Paines Plough, ratcheting up the stakes and jumping brilliantly from scouse narco to Belfast terrorist or bent screw to create a distinct and distinctly dangerous set of characters. Behind the time bomb humour lies a subtle analysis of the social and cultural reasons these damaged men are behind bars. EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick's 'soap return after three month suspension' leaves disability campaigners fuming following his shocking slur backstage at Strictly
EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick will reportedly return to work on the BBC soap next month, much to the dismay of disability campaigners. The actor, 31, who has played Jay Brown for 19 years, was suspended by the broadcaster in June after being caught backstage at Strictly using a slur aimed at disabled people. A video obtained by The Sun on Sunday showed Jamie using the term 'm********s' to describe residents of Blackpool where the show was being filmed at the time. The Sun now reports that the actor will return to work after a three month suspension, despite calls for him to undergo 'awareness training'. Shani Dhanda from disability charity Scope told the publication: 'What shocked me most about this story is the character Jamie plays in the show often appears alongside another character called Janet who has Down syndrome. 'His character was even her stepdad at one point. He didn't say the word directly to a disabled person, but even still language is so important'.
