Govt to disburse third instalment of Subhadra scheme funds on Raksha Bandhan
2
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha govt will disburse the third instalment of
Subhadra Yojana
funds, amounting to Rs 5,000, to over one crore beneficiaries on August 9 on Raksha Bandhan in Koraput. "Following the disbursement, the portal will open for fresh registration," deputy chief minister Pravati Parida said on Wednesday.
"Those who turned 21 recently will be allowed to apply for the scheme after August 9 on the portal," Parida added.
Around two lakh beneficiaries were rejected from receiving the third instalment of the Subhadra scheme for failing various eligibility criteria post-disbursal. "Nearly two lakh beneficiaries, who received the first instalment, were later found ineligible since they own five acres of land, a vehicle or had filed IT returns," Parida said.
The govt has decided to conduct a door-to-door field-level survey after August 9 to know the exact reasons behind rejection and assess if they are true or not. "By reopening the portal and reassessing past exclusion, the state govt is keen to address gaps in implementation. After the survey, those who are found eligible will receive the instalments at one go," Parida added.
The Odisha govt launched the flagship Subhadra Yojana, a welfare scheme for women aged between 21 and 60, to provide Rs 50,000 per year for over a five-year period, from 2024-25 to 2028-29.

Raigad's tribal ashram school celebrates nature-friendly Rakhi
Navi Mumbai: Students from a tribal ashram school in Pen, Raigad, and those from Carmel High School celebrated Rakshabandhan in an eco-friendly way— by not just tying rakhis to each other, but to trees as well. They tried to convey the message that a rakhi is not just a reminder of bonds in relationships, but should also carry a message of protecting nature and tribal culture. The event was organised by the Pen-based NGO, Ankur Trust, which has been fighting for tribal rights and empowerment for over three decades. On this occasion, senior social worker of Ankur Trust, Dr Vaishali Patil, said, "The real protection of tribals come from mountains, valleys, bushes, and forests. That's why we celebrate Rakshabandhan by tying rakhi to nature." Former sarpanch of Tarankhop gram panchayat Dinesh Patil, Raj Patil, Carmel School principal Sister Sofaya, teachers Pratiksha Kadam, M Sakshi, Lankesh Gawas, and Hema Gharat were present at the programme. A tribal student said, "Nature teaches us to protect ourselves by doing just the right things which do not harm the environment. Our lives are interlinked to nature." Uttarakhand CM moved after rescued woman pilgrim tore saree's pallu to tie rakhi on him
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday was moved by the emotional gesture of a rescued woman pilgrim from Gujarat who tore a part of her saree's 'pallu' and tied it like a 'rakhi' on his wrist to thank him for taking such good care of the stranded yatris. Dhami has been camping in Uttarkashi for the last three days to keep a close eye on the rescue operations underway in the affected areas of the district.(@pushkardhami/X) Touched by her warm gesture, Dhami bowed to her with folded hands, saying it was a very "special blessing" for him. The incident happened at Harsil helipad when Dhan Gauri, a resident of Ishanpur in Ahmedabad, went over to the chief minister to express her gratitude for being looked after so well by the state government. Dhami has been camping in Uttarkashi for the last three days to keep a close eye on the rescue operations underway in the affected areas of the district. The festival of rakhi or Raksha Bandhan, which celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, falls on Saturday. Officials said many pilgrims from Gujarat had to return to Gangotri after the flashflood hit Dharali on Tuesday. They were put up at hotels and other lodging facilities there and taken good care of, the officials said, adding that they began to be evacuated in helicopters to Matli and Harsil when the weather improved on Tuesday. So far, 650 pilgrims have been evacuated since Tuesday, when torrents of mud swallowed homes, hotels and cars. Officials have said four people were killed in the flash floods. Two bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) said 16 people, including nine Army personnel and seven civilians, are missing.

Irani quarry in Kolhapur city goes nearly dry raising questions over Ganesh idol immersion
Kolhapur: Members of several Ganesh mandals in the city are worried that they do not know where and how would idols be immersed at the end of Ganeshotsav this year. The Irani quarry adjacent to Rankala Lake, where domestic and mandal idols from across the city and suburban areas are immersed, was recently cleaned, but the contractor did not refill the quarry with water. This has rendered Ganesh mandals to question how will they immerse 21ft idols in this quarry. Due to restrictions on immersion into natural water bodies, idols are immersed in artificial immersion tanks. Suraj Patil, a Sambhajinagar Ganesh mandal member, said, "There are nearly 50 Ganesh idols in Kolhapur city which are between 18ft to 21ft in height. If the water level isn't increased, how will these idols get immersed in the quarry?" Officials of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC), however, said the quarry will be full by the time Ganesh immersion arrives. A KMC official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said: "Due to the immersion of a large number of idols, the Irani quarry and another quarry adjacent to it are filled with heaps of idols and other materials. Therefore, both these quarries have to be cleaned once every two years. This year, tenders were floated, and the quarries were cleaned. The contractor took up this work just before monsoon. Water was pumped out of the quarry, so one of the quarries has less water. By the time of Ganesh immersion, this quarry will be full due to rainwater."
