The 17 most valuable cassette tapes sold on Discogs from the world of rock and metal

Scotsman10-07-2025
Were you one of those people who caught Ozzy Osbourne's final performance at Back To The Beginning last weekend (July 5, 2025)?
Me too! And perhaps it's also led to you dusting off that old box of cassette tapes, whether to show a younger generation that yes, we did use to listen to music on that 'archaic' format (by today's standards), or maybe just to reminisce about a time that you could walk into Woolworths, pick up the latest heavy metal release, and have enough change to get some lolly mix. Or that might just be me...
But with a newer generation of music fans gravitating towards all the things us 'older lot' used to consider the cutting-edge of technology, it might be worth taking a look at how much some of those cassette tape releases are worth. Thanks to the Discogs app, it's as easy as scanning a barcode or typing in the catalogue number on their website. You never know – as it stands, that Death Angel tape you have lying around somewhere is actually worth something, or at least sold for an incredible price through the online marketplace.
So, for hard rock, metal, and that cacophony of noise in between (the type your parents loathed when you'd play it on the car stereo), what have been some of the most expensive sales on Discogs for the lovable, if not sometimes infuriating (like getting your tape chewed up), magnetic strip of musical history?
1 . Alice In Chains - MTV Unplugged (£51.09)
An iconic live document. This 1996 Spanish cassette album (CBS ‎– COL 484300-4) captures one of Alice in Chains' most powerful and poignant performances, a definitive acoustic set that remains highly sought after by fans and collectors of specific regional pressings. | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales
2 . Metallica - Nothing Else Matters (£58.03)
The power of an anthem. This 1992 US cassette single (Elektra ‎– 4-64770), featuring SR and Dolby HX Pro, stands out for its high value, demonstrating how an iconic song from a global metal titan can drive significant collector demand even on a single format - that's two songs on one tape for that amount! | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales
3 . Rage Against The Machine - Renegades (£72.64)
A late-era rarity. This 2000 US cassette album (Epic ‎– ET 85289) is valuable due to its production year, as commercial cassette releases were largely phased out in major Western markets by this time, making this a scarcer collectible for Rage Against The Machine fans. | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales
4 . Slipknot - Slipknot (£72.99)
A modern metal debut. This 1999 US cassette album (Roadrunner Records ‎– RR 8655-4, Stereo), from a band that exploded into mainstream consciousness, holds significant value due to its iconic status and the relatively lower production numbers for cassettes in the US during that period. Rumour has it we may see an expanded edition in late 2025... | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales

Netflix movie dominates global top 10 with 47 million views in just 3 days

Link is copied Comments Summer blockbuster season is in full swing at the cinema - and it's the same story on Netflix. Because just as we're all flocking to the movies to catch Superman and the Fantastic Four in full flight, so too are people embracing the streaming platform's seasonal offerings in their millions. In fact this week's top three all boast viewing figures which at any other time of year would have secured them the number one spot - but like we said, it's competitive out there at the moment. Read on for this week's global most-watched movie chart... (Picture: Getty Images) Tyler Perry's on a Netflix roll at the moment following the enormous success of his psychological thriller Straw, and now his latest comedy is following suit, which sees the return of mouthy matriarch Madea. This outing sees the comic character heading to the Bahamas, as the daughter of Madea's nephew Brian (also played by Perry) prepares to tie the knot with a rapper. Plenty of slapstick and hi-jinks ensue, along with a healthy dose of heartwarming family drama (Picture: Netflix/Everett/Shutterstock) The first of this week's new entries comes courtesy of the ongoing Trainwreck series, which aims to shine a light on events, celebrations and situations which all went drastically wrong. PI Moms takes a deep dive into the 2010 Lifestime reality show of the same name about soccer moms turned private investigators - which ended badly when the head of their agency became embroiled in scandal (Picture: Netflix) Moving down the chart is this Brazilian comedy‑drama from director Felipe Joffily that's charmed audiences across the world with its messy familial twists and warm humour. It boasts a cast that sparkles with chemistry, though critics were quick to point out that it has more than a few predictable plot points - although the fact it's added another six million viewers to its tally suggests that's not too much of an issue (Picture: Netflix) The second new entry of the week is this psychological drama from Indonesia, which is keeping viewers across the world enthralled. A Normal Woman tells the story of a socialite whose life is disrupted by a mystery illness, which in turn forces her to confront her environment and question her own identity. Expect some complex themes, including madness and isolation, to be explored in this one (Picture: Netflix/Everett/Shutterstock) It might have been described as 'the ultimate grandmother of all bad movies ever made', yet this German sci-fi thriller continues to prove popular. The movie follows couple Tim and Olivia, who find themselves trapped in their apartment block after a mysterious, impenetrable brick wall springs up outside their door. When they discover their neighbours are facing the same fate, they are forced to work together to find an escape route (Picture: Netflix/Sasha Ostrov) Netflix's South Korean psychological thriller set in a claustrophobic apartment building is continuing to keep audiences gripped. The film centres on a man who invests his life savings into an apartment - only to discover there are some unsettling secrets lurking beneath his new home. Film reviewers applauded its tense atmosphere and sharp production design, though some found the specifics of the 'mystery' a little predictable (Picture: Young-Uk Jeon/Netlix) This quiet indie flick, which combines fall foliage with emotional isolation, continues to impress, vaulting up the top 10 this week and nearly doubling its viewing figures in the process. One of those movies that does what it says on the tin, it's the true story of Donn Fendler, a 12-year-old boy left to fight for survival after a storm separates him from his family - and leaves him trapped on a treacherous mountain (Picture: Everett/Shutterstock) Given the arrival of the long-belated sequel to Happy Gilmore, it's no surprise to see the original make an appearance in the charts. And what an appearance it is, with the 1996 Adam Sandler comedy driving all the way into the top three. The funnyman plays the title character, an aspiring hockey player who joins the PGA tour in a bid to make some money and save his grandmother's house. Mayhem ensues, of course (Picture: Universal/ Kobal/Shutterstock) In any other week KPop Demon Hunters' huge viewing figures would have seen it taking the top spot very comfortably. However the animated musical fantasy's time at the top has come to an end this week, despite adding more than 26 million more views to its tally. It follows Huntrix, a world-renowned K-pop girl band who are leading double lives as demon hunters - which comes in handy when they have to face off against a rival boy band, The Saja Boys - who are secretly demons (Picture: NETFLIX) And so to the movie that's seen off all competition over the past few days, scoring a hole in one with an astonishing number of views in just three days. Nearly 30 years on from the original Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler once again picks up his golf clubs and returns to the title role, this time with our hero - now a retired, widowed alcoholic - heading back to the golf course in a bid to finance his daughter's overseas ballet school. Will there be chaos? You betcha (Picture: Netflix/Shutterstock)

Lindsay Lohan's Press Tour Is A Love Letter To Her Early Roles

If your early 2000s DVD collection included The Devil Wears Prada , Bend It Like Beckham and My Best Friend's Wedding , you'll be pleased to know they're all in various stages of reboot. Now, the long awaited Freaky Friday sequel ( Freakier Friday ) is officially joining the lineup - and Lindsay Lohan is already bringing the throwbacks. ©Lindsay Lohan Freaky Friday UK Premiere, Getty Images While doing UK press for the film on July 31, Lohan hit the red carpet in a custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin gown that instantly caught the eye of loyal fans. The dress - a sheer lavender metal mesh design covered in golden Swarovski crystals was a reimagining of the one she wore in Freaky Friday's final wedding scene, originally designed by Mandalay. Whilst the riff off was covered in gems, the original featured a delicate lace trimmed camisole top and matching bias-cut skirt. Ludovic de Saint Sernin took to Instagram to say, 'I can't believe I'm actually writing this caption right now. I've been dreaming and manifesting this moment for nearly 20 years. And the best part of it all is that I got to see it with my own eyes! What an incredible privilege to be a creative and to have the opportunity to make your teenage dreams come true. I feel overwhelmed with joy and love right now. It's a full-circle moment for me.' The archival nod didn't stop at the dress. Lohan carried a miniature guitar-shaped bag by Judith Leiber, a playful wink to her character Anna's band girl past. Where the original character wore hers on a strap, Lohan clutched this one like a clutch, turning teenage angst into red carpet moment. She finished the look with simple Manolo Blahnik heels which gave the look a more grown up feel. The Mean Girls star has been on a full nostalgia streak lately. Earlier this week, she paid tribute to another one of her iconic roles - this time from her film debut, The Parent Trap . Appearing on Good Morning America on July 28, Lohan wore a butter yellow two piece set from Balmain's pre-spring 2026 collection by Olivier Rousteing. The look featured a cropped tweed jacket in a white and black plaid and a matching mini skirt. It's safe to say Lindsay Lohan's press tour is a love letter to her early roles. Freakier Friday will be out in cinemas on the August 8th. [ Renee Washington ]{href=' } , Grazia's digital fashion and beauty writer, lives online. 15 names bookies think could play Ozzy Osbourne in a future film of the late metal icon

Of the pantheon (or glut) of musical biopics that could appear in the forthcoming years, one name that we bid farewell to this week stands above the rest – Ozzy Osbourne. 'The Prince of Darkness' is one of those rare musicians who managed to transcend one art form, becoming as much a beloved reality show dad as he is one of the godfathers of heavy metal. With tales of debauchery, redemption, and recovery towards the end of his life, it would no doubt make a fascinating biopic should it come to fruition. Do I hear early Oscar buzz... very early, should I say? With discussions now surrounding potentially 'when' rather than 'if' we get a biopic on the life of Ozzy Osbourne, Entertainment expert, James Leyfield, has already offered up suggestions who could play the role in the future, with some obvious names alongside a few interesting selections, depending on the nature of the biopic. So, who could play Ozzy in his life story? Here are the 15 favourites and the odds that are currently being offered. 1 . Denzel Washington (Odds: 10/1, Probability: 9.1%) A veteran Hollywood actor and an acting legend, his casting would be seen as a huge left-field choice. However, given his immense versatility, you could argue he has the dramatic chops to nail the 'Prince of Darkness' persona - especially if any biopic eschews a normal narrative for a biopic (see: I'm Not Here.) | Valery Hache/Pool/Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Fred Hechinger (Odds: 9/1, Probability: 10%) Hechinger is a contemporary, youthful choice for the role. The young actor is best known for his work in the Fear Street trilogy and HBO's The White Lotus, making him a rising star with a unique and quirky screen presence. |Photo Sales 3 . Caleb Landry Jones (Odds: 8/1, Probability: 11.1%) A surprising entry, Jones has received critical acclaim for his roles in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Get Out, showcasing his range with intense and off-kilter characters. His experience with dramatic, transformative roles could lend a unique depth to the portrayal of Osbourne. |for FLC Photo Sales 4 . Iwan Rheon (Odds: 15/2, Probability: 11.7%) For fans of HBO's Game of Thrones, Rheon's casting would no doubt elicit comparisons to the more villainous roles he has undertaken. But his roles in films such as The Dirt show he has the experience to pull off the musician lifestyle, having portrayed Mick Mars in the Motley Crue biopic. | CHRIS DELMAS/AFP via Getty Images Photo Sales
