Costco is bringing back a perk to help shoppers beat the crowds — if you have an Executive Membership

Business Insider5 hours ago

Costco is bringing back a key perk for shoppers in its higher-priced membership tier.
Starting June 30, Executive members will be able to shop an hour earlier than Gold Star members.
Slightly less than half of Costco members are Executive, but they represent 73% of sales.
A big perk is coming to Costco's higher-priced membership tier.
The warehouse club said it would begin allowing Executive Members in the US to shop an hour earlier than standard members starting June 30, according to an email to employees seen by Business Insider.
"Our Executive Members are our most loyal members, and we want to reward them for their commitment to Costco," the email said.
Costco did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
Executive Members were previously offered extended shopping hours at some locations, but the perk was phased out in recent years, Costco Insider reported.
The company also said in the email that Executive members would start receiving a $10 monthly credit for Instacart orders and $150 worth of other benefits and savings on Costco services.
Costco's higher-priced membership comes with several benefits, including 2% rewards on purchases.
Slightly fewer than half of Costco members are Executive-tier, which costs twice as much as the standard $65-a-year level, called Gold Star. Executive Members account for more than 73% of the company's total sales, according to the company.
Improving the attractiveness of the Executive upgrade could help Costco boost membership fee revenue and drive higher sales. It might also alleviate traffic that has been a challenge for some stores.
Costco has also been testing earlier hours at its gas stations for all members. The company said during its May earnings call that the impact on sales has been positive so far.

No, your Costco card cannot be used as a substitute for a REAL ID. What Tennesseans should know about travel

While a Costco membership has multiple perks, including bulk discounts and savings on gas, there are a few things the card can't provide. For example, access to board domestic flights or certain federal facilities, unlike the REAL ID. Since the May 7 implementation date, travelers in Tennessee and across the United States have relied on REAL ID — or other acceptable forms of identification — to pass through security and travel domestically. Some, however, have opted for other methods of identification, which has led the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to recently debunk the rumor that customers' warehouse club cards can substitute for a REAL ID. "We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not," wrote the administration in a post to social media. Despite some membership cards displaying a star and digital options displaying a photo, that doesn't qualify the cards as a valid form of identification. In order to fly, travelers must have either a REAL ID, a valid passport or another federally issued photo ID. As previously reported by USA TODAY, TSA Pacific spokesperson Lorie Dankers told SFGate that the rumor of Costco cards being accepted as official identification pops up every year or so. When people try to use their warehouse club cards at airports, for instance, it could lead to delays and travel headaches, she added. No — Tennesseans are not required to obtain a REAL ID compliant license or identification credential. A REAL ID is not necessary to drive, vote, purchase alcohol or cigarettes, access hospitals, visit the post office, access federal courts or apply for or receive federal benefits such as social security or veterans' benefits. If you don't have a REAL ID, here is the complete list of TSA acceptable IDs: State-issued Enhanced Driver's License U.S. passport U.S. passport card DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST) U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents Permanent resident card Border crossing card An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs). HSPD-12 PIV card Foreign government-issued passport Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card Transportation worker identification credential U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766) U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) Yes — Tennesseans can still obtain a REAL ID, with or without an appointment, although walk-in applicants should anticipate potentially long wait times. Popular Dumbbells Sold at Costco Recalled After Concussions, Broken Toes

Popular fitness equipment that was sold at Costco and other major retailers has been recalled after more than 100 injury reports. The item is so popular that at least 3.7 million have been sold, yet the recall notice warns of an "impact hazard." The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on its website. Specifically, the product under recall is BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells. "Johnson Health Tech Trading Recalls BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells Due to Impact Hazard, Including 3.7 Million Sold by Nautilus Inc.," the announcement says. According to Fox Business, in addition to Costco, the product was sold at Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods, and through Amazon and BowFlex's website. "The weight plates can dislodge from the handle during use, posing an impact hazard," the recall notice warns. It adds: "Johnson Health Tech Trading has received 12 reports of the plates dislodging during use with no injuries for units it sold. Nautilus received 337 reports of the plates dislodging during use for units it sold, including 111 resulting in injuries such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes or contusions." The remedy is listed as "refund" and "replace." The recall notice is dated June 5. "This recall involves the BowFlex branded Model 552, 52.5 LB Adjustable Dumbbells and Model 1090, 90 LB Adjustable Dumbbells. The dumbbells were sold in pairs and single units in the color black and include handles, weight plates and a molded plastic tray," the recall notice adds. "The model 552 dumbbells adjust from 5 to 52.5 pounds and the model 1090 adjusts from 10 to 90 pounds using manual adjustment knobs while the weights are nested in the base. The model and serial number are printed on a sticker located on the bottom of the molded plastic tray," it adds. The government website lists affected serial and model numbers. "BowFlex Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2024. Johnson Health Tech Trading has agreed to provide a remedy for the 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells sold by BowFlex Inc., (formerly Nautilus Inc.), prior to May 2024 as a part of this recall," the notice Dumbbells Sold at Costco Recalled After Concussions, Broken Toes first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 9, 2025

Waymo suspends robotaxi rides near LA protests after 5 cars are set ablaze

Waymo suspended robotaxi service in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday after five vehicles were set on fire during protests against President Donald Trump 's immigration raids in the city. Photos show Waymo cars covered in anti-ICE graffiti burning in the street, engulfed in smoke. A spokesperson for Waymo confirmed to Business Insider that five vehicles had been vandalized during the protests. The company temporarily suspended service in downtown LA and doesn't think its vehicles were intentionally targeted, the spokesperson said. Waymo is working with the Los Angeles Police Department, they added. On Sunday night, the LAPD said on X that "burning lithium-ion batteries release toxic gases." Electric vehicles often use lithium-ion batteries. The spokesperson told BI that Waymo, which Alphabet owns, operates more than 300 vehicles in LA and is continuing operations in other parts of the city. It's not the first time that Waymo vehicles have been targeted in California. Last year, a crowd in San Francisco set one of the robotaxis on fire during Lunar New Year celebrations amid a wave of distrust about driverless vehicles. The protests broke out on Friday after an immigration raid in the city. Over the weekend, Trump bypassed California Gov. Gavin Newsom 's authority and ordered 2,000 National Guard members to the LA area. Despite the dramatic images, the protests have largely been peaceful, according to multiple reports. The demonstrations have become a political lightning rod between Newsom and Trump, and the governor has announced that he's suing the administration. They may, however, serve as an olive branch between the president and Elon Musk, who had an ugly falling out last week.
