Women explore firefighting at Brighton Fire Department Female Firefighter Field Day
BRIGHTON, N.Y. (WROC) — The Brighton Fire Department held its second annual Female Firefighter Field Day on Sunday.
Through the event, women in the community were invited to the station to participate in immersive activities to learn about the jobs of volunteer firefighters.
The event was held at the fire station located at 3100 East Avenue from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Participants were allowed to wear firefighting gear, use the 'jaws of life' in different activities, spray fire hoses, explore a maze, and hear stories from current firefighters at the station.
OCSO participates in Drug Take Back Day
News 8 spoke to Alannah Scardino, a Brighton Volunteer Firefighter, on Sunday, about the mission to expose women to the field.
'I think why we wanted to have a hands-on event is because for a lot of women in the community, they see the physical aspect of firefighting as a barrier,' Scardino said. 'We just want to give women in the community the opportunity to really see what their own capabilities are in a very safe, fun, and supportive environment.'
Brighton Fire Department Chief Stephen Macadena mentioned Sunday is also recognized as Recruit New York Day across the state.
'It's amazing. It makes my heart feel really full just because I know how much the fire service has given me and has really strengthened me in my own personal life and personal skills,' Scardino said, 'So being able to expose the fire service to more women so that maybe it's something that sparks joy in one or a couple of them, that's super rewarding.'

Wildfire smoke may trigger air quality advisories this week
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Wildfire smoke drifting into Rochester is adding a noticeable haze to the skies – and it's affecting more than just the view. While air quality levels remain low at the moment, that's not to say they aren't going to change. 'The wildfire smokes most people associate with particulate matter. And that would be the primary concern most times. But the wildfire smoke can contribute to ozone formation. And later this week, we are setting up for a situation where ozone formation is favorable,' said Margaret LaFarr, director for the division of air resources at the NYS DEC LaFarr notes that wildfire smoke could raise ozone levels enough to trigger advisories this week, though none have been issued yet. If they are, the effects could be felt by everyone, not just those with asthma or heart disease. 'The air pollution can still irritate your eyes, your throat. And your lungs. So, you just have to, basically listen to what your body is telling you in terms of any of those symptoms of, scratchy eyes or throat or, wheezing and adjust your activity accordingly,' said Dr. Daniel Croft, a pulmonologist and researcher with URMC. To stay safe from outdoor pollution, close windows, use the car's recirculate setting, and keep air flowing through your furnace filter though there are other steps to consider as well. 'When the temperature as it will in the coming days when it becomes very hot outside, if you are do not have a way to use fans or another way to cool yourselves in the indoors with the windows closed, please seek assistance,' Dr. Croft said. 'You might want to think about what time of day you go out and exercise and maybe get your run in early in the morning before the ozone levels really get to a higher level where it might affect you,' said LaFarr For the latest air quality level updates, residents are urged to visit government websites, like for the latest levels. Golden Apple Award: Congratulations to Marti Henderson!
HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WROC) — Congratulations to our latest Golden Apple Award winner, Marti Henderson. Henderson teaches Physical Education at Sherman Elementary in Henrietta. Throughout her 36 years of teaching, she has inspired countless others with her dedication and guidance. 'I've known Marti for over 33 years. We've been together through friendships, different disciplines, different districts and throughout all that time, Marti is the consummate professional. She is so good to her students of course, but she is also really good to us,' Henderson's colleague Anne Marie Leo-Catapano said. 'Not just the young teachers, she inspires and takes good care of them, but she's also very helpful to seasoned teachers. She is everything you want in a colleague, she really is.' Principal Dave Passero said, 'She wears her heart on her sleeve. Every single child matters, and she makes sure that she finds a way to engage each and every student.' For the past six years, Henderson has been teaching Physical Education. The kids call her coach. But, prior to that, she was a science teacher. No matter the subject, she has always been someone students can turn to. Colleague Julia Brongo said, 'She's the go-to person where if they are struggling with insecurities or what have you, they know they can go to coach. She just gives sound advice. She teaches to the whole child, not just Phys Ed, but how to be good humans.' Colleague Keyshawn Brown adds, 'She's taught me a lot of things about being a good teacher and classroom management techniques, how to talk in front of people, project my voice. There's been countless things she's done to help me over the past 2 years.' Mrs. Henderson has decided that this will be her last year teaching. She is retiring after 36 and a half years. Teaching wasn't her first career choice, but it was the right choice. 'After college I became a scientist, and I just didn't love it. But I did love the sciences, so then I decided after that career that I was going to pursue my teaching degree. So I went back to school got it and have loved every minute of it since,' Henderson told News 8. She will be missed, but leaves knowing she has made a difference. She recalls a visit from a former student a few years ago. 'She came over with flowers and balloons and said I just wanted to let you know that I was inspired by your teaching of science and I became a scientist, and I just had to come and tell you…You just don't know what you are going to say or do that could change it for somebody,' Henderson said. Sound advice from a great teacher. Congratulations Marti! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
