Chennai: An NGO released a draft People's Education Policy on Thursday, suggesting it could be an alternative to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The All India Save Education Committee (AISEC), which came up with the policey, suggested a two-language system in schools and proposed continuing the present 10+2 system with provisions for pre-primary education and three-year undergraduate degrees, and providing free education from pre-primary to Class XII.The NEP proposed restructuring the school education system from the 10+2 structure to a 5+3+3+4 model.
"Pre-primary, primary, and middle schools should be seamlessly integrated. This will facilitate a better transition of children from primary to upper primary classes," the draft People's Education Policy (PEP) said.
"Admission shall not be based on centralised tests like NEET and JEE. Universities or higher educational institutions shall decide their own admission policy for admitting students into undergraduate and postgraduate programmes," said K Yogarajan, secretary, AlSEC.
While allowing universities and colleges to give preference to local students, it suggested reserving 20% of seats for students from other universities and states to balance local aspirations and integration.
The PEP supported the two-language policy. "A student shall learn both the mother tongue and English. In addition, students shall have the option to learn any additional language, and this shall be optional," Yogarajan said.
The alternative education policy also demanded an increase in the allocation to education in the union budget to 10% and 6% of the GDP. State govts shall allocate up to 25% of their budget to education.
It suggested providing free education from pre-primary to Class XII with funding from union and state govts.
The policy wanted to continue with the three-year undergraduate degrees instead of four-year degrees. "Introducing multiple entry and exit is anarchic and will lead to dropouts, leaving these dropouts without jobs.
Three-year degrees allow students to complete degrees by twenty years which makes higher eduation affordable," Yogarajan said.
PEP also opposed introducing vocational education before Class X. "Education up to Class X should be common to all. The introduction of vocational subjects in upper primary schools will invariably replace some subjects that are presently taught," it said.
Yogarajan said the policy will be presented to the union govt and state govts for implementation. "It's the draft policy, and we will make amendments to drafts in the conference to be held in January 2026," he added.
The document criticised the NEP, saying it encourages privatisation and commercialisation of education from pre-school to university level, making it difficult for the poor to access quality education.

NEET PG 2025 to be held on August 3 in single shift as SC approves delay
The Supreme Court has granted permission to the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to conduct the NEET-PG 2025 examination on August 3, in a single shift. The decision came after the board's plea for rescheduling to ensure uniformity and fairness, as per the court's directive. Court accepts NBEMS request, but no further delay allowed A bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih, which had earlier questioned the extended timeline requested by NBEMS, accepted the board's explanation, noting the reasons appeared to be genuine. However, the apex court emphasised that no further extension would be allowed for conducting the exam. The decision follows the Supreme Court's May 30 order directing that NEET-PG must be held in a single shift to ensure uniformity and eliminate disparities in question paper difficulty levels. The exam was earlier scheduled for June 15, but NBEMS sought a rescheduling due to the logistical challenge of conducting a single-shift exam for over 2.42 lakh candidates. Justice PK Mishra questioned delay Justice PK Mishra questioned the National Board of Examinations (NBE) over the prolonged delay, asking, 'Why do you need time till August 3?' Meanwhile, Justice AG Masih expressed concern over the lack of progress since the May 30 order, stating that no concrete steps had been taken and that the delay was unwarranted. 'What have you done since then? Why do you need two full months?' he asked. In its application, NBEMS cited logistical hurdles in organising a single-shift exam for over 2.42 lakh candidates nationwide on the earlier date. The board explained that it had approached its technical partner, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), immediately after the Supreme Court's May 30 directive to assess the feasibility of a single-shift test on June 15. TCS responded the same day, stating that the timeline was insufficient for the necessary infrastructural arrangements. In a follow-up on June 2, TCS advised that holding the exam on June 15 in one shift was unworkable and recommended August 3 as the earliest practical alternative. The revised date, NBEMS stated, would provide enough time to arrange over 1,000 test centres across nearly 250 cities, with capacity for more than 2.70 lakh candidates, including a buffer. NEET PG: A crucial exam for medical aspirants NEET-PG is a crucial examination for admission into postgraduate medical courses across India, and any disruption or inconsistency in its conduct directly impacts thousands of aspiring doctors. NEET-PG 2025 examination date The exam will now be held on August 3 in a single shift from 9 AM to 12:30 PM.

SC allows NBE to schedule NEET-PG 2025 exam on August 3
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed an application filed by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) seeking permission to schedule the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-PG 2025 on August 3. A Bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih took note of the submission that August 3 was the earliest possible available date given by its technology partner for conducting the NEET-PG 2025 examination in terms of the recent apex court order. Allowing the application filed by the NBE to conduct the NEET-PG 2025 examination on August 3, the Justice Mishra-led Bench clarified that no further time extension will be allowed by the top court. In an order passed on May 30, the Supreme Court deprecated the practice of conducting the NEET-PG exam in two shifts and opined that holding the examination in two shifts leads to arbitrariness and cannot give a level playing field to the candidates. It ordered the NBE to make necessary arrangements for holding the NEET-PG 2025 examination in one shift, duly ensuring that complete transparency is maintained and secure centres are identified and commissioned. "The question papers in two shifts can never be of the same difficulty level. Last year, it (NEET-PG 2024) may have been held in two shifts in the facts and circumstances of that stage. But the examining body ought to have considered making arrangements for holding the examination in one shift,' the Supreme Court had remarked. The apex court was dealing with a clutch of petitions challenging the lack of transparency in the conduct of the NEET-PG examination. In their plea filed before the apex court, NEET-PG aspirants claimed that the introduction of two shifts, normalisation method, and change in the tie-breaker criterion affected medical students adversely. The petitioners said that NEET-PG had never been held in two shifts before and had always remained a single-shift and single-day examination to ensure a uniform examination standard and fairness of the national test.
