AIIB looks to up exposure to India

Time of India4 days ago
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) plans to increase its investment exposure in India from $12 billion to $16-17 billion over the next two to three years. This expansion is driven by a focus on private sector projects, particularly in renewable energy, green mobility, and affordable housing.
NEW DELHI: Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is looking to increase its exposure to India from $12 billion to $16-17 billion over next two-three years, on the back of an increased exposure to the private sector, a senior executive said Tuesday.
"There is a massive requirement for funds to build infrastructure around the world and more so in India. Given the govt's expenditure commitments, the private sector has to step up investments in infrastructure and it can use the facilities, including funding offered by AIIB. Our funding will help catalyse private investment. AIIB is also looking to significantly ramp up its exposure to the private sector in India from the current $1.8 billion.
Commercial banks can also tap into our resources. Apart from funding we also offer constant monitoring of projects and global best practices," said AIIB vice president Ajay Bhushan Pandey.
The multilateral development agency has identified renewable energy, green mobility, and affordable housing as top focus areas. "We are also open to finance digital infrastructure like data centres, AI and digital communication.
The scope is very wide. If there are innovative projects, such as those related to AI or even semiconductors, we can work to make them more bankable and provide funding. AIIB's definition of infrastructure, apart from traditional infrastructure like energy, transport, water etc, includes health, education and digital and the scope is quite wide," said Pandey, a former finance secretary.
AIIB acts like an anchor and helps companies financed by it raise funds from other international agencies and investors. The agency is looking to increase its annual funding to all countries from around $10 billion to $17-18 billion, with half the money likely to flow to the private sector by 2030.

ULBs told to intensify revenue generation

Vijayawada: Urban local bodies (ULBs) must focus on bridging infrastructure gaps not covered under Central or external funding schemes and improve their financial self-reliance, said S Suresh Kumar, principal secretary, municipal administration and urban development. He stressed that ULBs should independently allocate funds to address local needs instead of relying solely on schemes like AMRUT, UIDF, or AIIB. Suresh Kumar made these remarks during a state-level video conference on Saturday, where he conducted a comprehensive review with all municipal commissioners. The meeting focused on enhancing financial discipline and revenue sustainability in ULBs. He underlined the importance of boosting statutory collections such as property tax and vacant land tax, and encouraged ULBs to adopt innovative funding models like Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to reduce reliance on government grants. As part of this effort, commissioner and director of municipal administration Dr P Sampath Kumar presented a detailed financial health report of each ULB for 2024–25, mapping their revenue potential, expenditure patterns, and fiscal goals. Dr Sampath Kumar urged ULBs to critically assess their budgetary performance, identify inefficiencies, and reorient their spending towards core services—especially sanitation. He said priorities should include solid waste management, scientific disposal, door-to-door garbage collection, and clean public spaces. Improving these areas, he noted, would enhance urban livability, public health, and environmental quality. He also advised municipal bodies to strengthen financial planning, control costs, and optimize resources to ensure long-term sustainability.

Trump push drives stablecoin urgency in Asian financial hubs

. . . 1 2 Asian markets are hurriedly updating their stablecoin rules as President Donald Trump's embrace of US dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies instils a fresh sense of urgency among the region's authorities. Recent developments in South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines point to a proliferation of stablecoins pegged to Asian currencies - even as authorities raise concerns about capital outflows. Regional heavyweights like and Ant Group plan to capitalise by applying to become issuers. Shares in Kakaopay ballooned on expectations that it would do the same. Even China, which has for years imposed a sweeping crypto ban, appears to be warming to the notion of tokens that serve as yuan surrogates. It all stems from the US, where lawmakers recently passed legislation that will promote wider use of digital tokens that seek to maintain a 1:1 peg with the dollar. The White House earmarked dollar stablecoins as a priority in a Jan executive order, days after Trump's inauguration. "The Genius Act has opened the floodgates for stablecoin adoption," said Benjamin Grolimund, general manager for the UAE at crypto exchange Flipster. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15+ Food That Clean Arteries (Most People Ignore) Undo "Whether you support it or not, stablecoins are now unavoidable." Overhanging Asia's flurry of activity is the fear of capital flight. The dollar reigns supreme in today's stablecoin market, with $256 billion in tokens pegged to the greenback. These maintain their price by managing reserves of cash-like assets, such as US Treasuries. By contrast, there's just $403 million of euro-backed stablecoins in circulation, despite a well established regulatory framework covering such products in the form of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation regime. The crypto-curious nation of South Korea offers a case-in-point. Koreans are already piling into dollar-pegged stablecoins. Transactions involving USDT, USDC and USDS - three of the largest dollar proxies - on five domestic exchanges reached 57 trillion won ($41 billion) in the first quarter, Yonhap News reported, citing Bank of Korea. While China's next steps are far from certain, crypto firms including brokers are already preparing for the prospect of yuan-pegged stablecoins. Kennix Chan, VP at Victory Securities, said the firm is in active talks with a range of would-be issuers in Hong Kong.
