
Time to rethink capital for sustainability
India's emergence as the world's fourth-largest economy reflects strong domestic demand and a rapidly growing entrepreneurial landscape. However, this growth is occurring against a backdrop of mounting environmental pressures. Air pollution levels in major cities routinely exceed safe limits, over 3,500 landfills dot urban India (CPCB, 2022), and increasingly erratic climate events threaten food and water security. The need to transition to a more resource-efficient, low-carbon economy is no longer a matter of debate, but of urgency.
Tech-led innovation will be central to India's circular transition. From alternative materials and clean manufacturing to waste-to-value solutions, climate-tech solutions offer scalable pathways to decarbonise industries and strengthen climate resilience. However, many of these innovations do not conform to conventional investment frameworks. Traditional ROI models prioritise near-term financial returns and proven markets. In contrast, climate-tech ventures often require longer gestation periods, operate in nascent ecosystems, and deliver multi-dimensional returns--economic, environmental and social.
To bridge the gap between innovation and implementation, India needs more catalytic capital; funding that is flexible, risk-tolerant, and impact-oriented. This is especially critical for early-stage climate-tech enterprises that operate in complex, unstructured markets. Consider Brisil Technologies, which upcycles rice husk ash, an agri-waste by-product known for exacerbating PM levels into high-purity green silica for use in rubber and paints. Or altM, which converts agricultural residue into renewable feedstock for chemical manufacturing, replacing the use of petrochemicals. Another case in point is Alt Carbon, whose enhanced rock weathering solution addresses the need to permanently remove atmospheric carbon.
While the markets that these innovations operate in are still maturing, the long-term environmental value is significant. These are compelling business models that solve for national priorities while representing the frontier of India's circular economy, and investors backing such ventures must be prepared for non-linear growth trajectories and long-term capital commitment. Beyond just venture capital, blended finance models, milestone-based grants, and anchor investments from development finance institutions (DFIs) can help unlock scale.
To accelerate India's circular economy transition, capital allocation must evolve along five key lines:
India's path to net-zero by 2070 will require more than technology; it will require an investment architecture that recognises and rewards circular, regenerative models. The circular economy is not just an environmental imperative, it is an economic one. Bringing circularity into the mainstream isn't just about cutting emissions or reducing waste, it's about reshaping India's growth trajectory. According to the MoEFCC, a circular economy could unlock a market opportunity exceeding $2 trillion by 2050 and create ~10 million additional jobs.

How India can turn trash into GDP
This World Environment Day gives us pause to reflect not just on the environmental challenges we face, but also on the untapped potential that lies within them. This year's theme of Combating Plastic Pollution highlights an urgent global priority that resonates strongly with India's own mounting waste crisis. The country generates over 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and this figure is expected to reach 165 million tonnes by 2030 if current trends persist. Of this, only about 70% is collected, and less than 20% is treated. The rest ends up in over 3,000 legacy dumpsites, many of which have become hazardous and unmanageable. Take India's Capital, New Delhi for instance- it sends tonnes of waste per day to just three landfills, all of which have long exceeded their capacity. These massive waste mountains are not just eyesores, they emit harmful gases like methane, pose severe health risks to nearby communities, and consume valuable urban land that could otherwise be used productively. Yet, hidden within this looming crisis is a powerful opportunity: the circular economy. If approached with intent and innovation, India can turn this trash into treasure, converting an environmental liability into a key driver of GDP. At its core, the circular economy is about rethinking how we produce, consume, and manage waste. Unlike the traditional linear model of take-make-dispose, the circular model is regenerative by design. It emphasises resource efficiency, reuse, recycling, and recovery, thereby minimising waste and extracting maximum value from every material. India, with its demographic dividend and fast-growing urban population, is uniquely positioned to lead in this transition. Forging development through the circular economy path could bring India annual benefits of up to $ 624 billion in 2050 as per Ellen MacArthur Foundation's report on Circular Economy in India: Rethinking growth for long-term prosperity. This shift not only boosts GDP but also supports climate goals, reduces dependency on imports, and creates millions of green jobs. There are practical pathways to realising the circular vision: As we observe World Environment Day, let us not merely raise awareness but commit to action. The circular economy is not a distant ideal, it is a viable, scalable solution waiting to be embraced. It's time India turns its trash into triumph and waste into wealth. Illegal shops set up along Galleria Market Road, NGT serves notice to govt agencies in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: National Green Tribunal (NGT) has initiated proceedings against CPCB, HSPCB, deputy commissioner, MCG commissioner and others over illegal commercial activities and environmental violations on a plot of land along the road leading to upscale Galleria market in in Sector 27. Dubey, who claimed the unauthorised operations were causing severe pollution and endangering public health, filed the application under sections 14, 15 and 18 of the NGT Act, 2010, highlighting "rampant violations" in areas situated near Hamilton Court and Galleria Market. The plots in question include khasra numbers 446/1/1, 446/1/1/3, 458, 459 and 460. Saying the matter raises critical environmental concerns, the NGT bench — comprising Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Dr Afroz Ahmad — on May 30 directed issuance of notices to the concerned respondents, asking them to submit replies before the next hearing on July 4. The complaint alleges these establishments engage in activities such as the illegal use and sale of diesel generator (DG) sets, open dumping and burning of waste, untreated sewage discharge and unregulated use of heavy vehicles. These operations, he says, have severely degraded air quality and increased noise pollution in the area. An inspection carried out by DHBVN (Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam) on Feb 21 had confirmed illegal electricity connections and unauthorised power resale by two landlords. Following this, the electricity supply was disconnected, but the accused parties allegedly continued operations using DG sets in violation of environmental norms. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Dubey, who works in the vicinity, said on Wednesday the pollution from construction materials, vehicular dust and untreated waste has led to serious health issues among residents and workers. He claims that several complaints made to civic and environmental authorities since August 2024 have gone unanswered. The petitioner has sought immediate sealing of illegal operations, penalties on violators, cancellation of licences and a zoning audit to assess the scale of damage. He also invoked Article 21 of the Constitution, saying the right to a clean environment is an essential part of the right to life.
