That doesn't mean things have been bad defensively and with pitching. St. Louis is in the top 10 for team ERA, and the fielding has been one of the best in the league.
"Before the year — and I told some of the St. Louis writers this — I thought they would surprise a lot of people," said Goldschmidt, per The New York Times. "And without talking to those guys, inside the clubhouse, I don't think they were all thinking rebuild or anything. I think they were thinking they were going to play well, and they have."
The Cardinals have quickly shifted from a slow start to embracing their role as a contender in the National League, and they can now focus on how to strengthen the team at the trade deadline.
