Kolkata: Former Jadavpur University student and current research scholar Hindol Mazumdar operated from a remote location to organise a violent protest against education minister
Bratya Basu
on March 1, the state claimed at the Alipore court on Friday.
"He was the mastermind of the attack with some ulterior motive. He designed all the action from Spain, reminding us of Aftab Ansari, who designed the attack on the American Cultural Centre from Dubai in 2002," said public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal in court. After the conclusion of arguments, the judge rejected his bail plea and ordered police custody till Aug 18.
On Friday, Mazumder was brought from Delhi to Kolkata and presented in the Alipore court.
The police requested 10 days of custody, while Mazumder's lawyer applied for bail. The police on Saturday questioned Mazumder on the "bigger conspiracy", pointing to him the messages he shared with fellow protesters.

Ghosal stated that there were allegations of vandalism against the accused, including disrespecting the National Flag. "WhatsApp chats prove the act was planned and organised from abroad. The chats align with other witnesses' statements, who said they acted on his instructions.

He was the mastermind and orchestrated the entire event," argued the govt lawyer.
The accused's lawyer argued that from March 1, the day of the incident, to March 9, various cases were filed, and 18 names appeared, but Mazumder's name was not among them. In response, Ghoshal argued that the lookout notice was issued by the police superintendent, not the court. The judge asked the accused to be produced in court again on Monday.

SAD rebel faction seeks reopening of Kartarpur Corridor
1 2 Amritsar: On the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, Harpreet Singh, president of the reorganised Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), invoked the painful legacy of Partition, calling it a "religious injustice" that continues to haunt Sikhs. Addressing a gathering, Harpreet Singh said Punjab and Bengal bore the brunt of India's freedom struggle, only to be brutally divided in 1947. "While Delhi celebrated, Punjab burned. The British departure unleashed a wave of hatred that claimed nearly a million lives. Children were butchered, and elders and women, unable to bear the horror, took their own lives," he said. He lamented that Sikhs were forced to abandon their sacred gurdwaras in Pakistan and resettle in Punjab in India. "We left behind our soul," he said, referring to revered shrines such as Sri Nankana Sahib, Gurdwara Panja Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib, Dera Sahib in Lahore, and Sacha Sauda. "Even today, Sikhs cannot freely visit these sites. The Kartarpur Corridor gave us hope, but it too became a victim of politics and diplomatic tensions. " Drawing a comparison, Harpreet Singh said, "Muslims can go for Hajj without visa denials or border restrictions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo But a Sikh must beg for a visa to bow before Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthplace. This is religious injustice on a global scale." He also spoke of elderly Sikhs who died with unfulfilled dreams of revisiting their childhood homes across the border, and similarly, elders in Pakistan who longed to return to ancestral villages in India. "Those responsible for this pain will never find peace—not even after death. The souls of the 10 lakh martyrs will not rest until justice is done," he said. Appeal to reopen Kartarpur Corridor ahead of Jyoti Jot Diwas In a related statement, officiating Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj urged the central government to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor ahead of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Jyoti Jot Diwas. He recalled the horrors of 1947, when Punjab witnessed massacres and displacement. "Sikhs on the western side of Punjab lost their fertile lands and over 200 sacred gurdwaras, including Sri Nankana Sahib. This grief is embedded in our daily prayers," he said. The corridor, opened during the 550th Prakash Gurpurb of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, had enabled emotional reunions at Kartarpur Sahib. However, recent Indo-Pak tensions led to its closure. "With Jyoti Jot Diwas approaching, reopening the corridor would allow the sangat to pay homage at this sacred site. We urge the government to act swiftly," he said. Nexus with contractors? GDA set to transfer 76 supervisors
Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is set to transfer 76 supervisors following persistent complaints of collusion with contractors in facilitating illegal construction. Residents also allege that supervisors, working in tandem with private builders, demand hefty sums to overlook unauthorised floors. GDA has around 200 supervisors in the seven zones under it, but its manual does not specify a maximum tenure for postings before an employee can be shifted. Many of the supervisors on the list have been posted in the same zone for more than five years. Officials admitted that supervisors posted in the same zones for years had formed "unholy alliances" with local realtors, and said the reshuffle aimed to curb the spread of illegal colonies, which have risen from 321 in 2021 to 351, occupying around 3,000 acres. Supervisors are also tasked with checking the quality of construction materials and ensuring that all work is carried out in line with the approved plan. However, their nexus with contractors runs deep. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Teaspoon Before Bed Burns Body Fat - Fit Into Your Clothes Again! Health & Family Click Here Undo A Vaishali resident told TOI, a contractor allegedly sought Rs 40,000 on behalf of a GDA official to allow his family to construct an additional floor in their two-storey flat. "We hired a private contractor, prepared a cost estimate, and even had construction material delivered," he said. But that evening, a GDA supervisor reached their house and warned the family that the work violated regulations. Unsure how to proceed, the family considered abandoning the plan. "But the contractor assured me it could be 'managed' for Rs 40,000. Construction went ahead without further interference. Only later did I realise the nexus between contractors and supervisors," he added. According to a GDA official, despite checks and balances, illegal construction has been unabated in the city. "We deduced that many of the supervisors are working in the same zone for years and have developed a nexus with contractors, allowing illegal construction. This nexus needs to be broken, for which GDA has prepared a list of 76 supervisors who will be transferred to other zones." Extortion Call From Thailand: Gang Busted, Three Arrested
New Delhi: Three friends, including a graduate from London School of Economics, were arrested for allegedly making a Rs 2-crore extortion call by impersonating well-known gangster Himanshu Bhau. Police said the trio was in debt and devised the plot to repay it. They travelled to Thailand to buy international SIM cards, which they used to send the threats, hoping it would appear more convincing and help them evade law agencies, police said. The accused, identified as Sumit (42), Prince (35) and Nitish (31), were businessmen and residents of west Delhi. A businessman based in central Delhi filed a complaint claiming that he had received a threatening international WhatsApp call from an unknown number. The caller, claiming to be Bhau, sent a QR code for a cryptocurrency payment of Rs 2 crore. He also threatened that the businessman's children would be killed if the demands were not met. "One of them, Nitish, holds a master's degree in a course related to software management from London School of Economics," he added. Two mobile phones used to generate the cryptocurrency QR code and make the call were also seized, Valsan said. All three accused told police that they were heavily in debt and plotted the call to pay it off in an easy way. Sumit, who runs a jewellery business, was well acquainted with the complainant and his family. To instil fear, they used Bhau's name. They devised the plot in India, said police. "Sumit was in debt of around Rs 60 lakh, Nitish owed Rs 10-20 lakh and Prince had liabilities amounting to Rs 1-2 crore," an officer said. Nitish was involved in the tour and travel industry while Prince was engaged in the finance sector. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
