Himachal cancels 172 hydro projects where construction is stalled
'It has been decided to apply a uniform free power royalty of 12% along with an additional 1% for the Local Area Development Fund for all hydro projects up to 5 MW that will be allotted in the future,' an official said.
The decisions were taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. The Cabinet also gave its approval to cancel 22 hydroelectric projects above 5 MW, previously allotted by the Directorate of Energy, where implementation agreements have not been signed.
A Department of Energy official told The Indian Express, 'We had issued show cause notices to the firms, which were given the contact to establish 22 hydroelectric projects above 5 MW. Some of them had submitted their reply. As per our initial assessment, some of the firms failed to obtain permissions and NOCs from various departments. Moreover, the firms are yet to enter into Instrument of Agreeement with the state government'.

Cabinet gives go-ahead for Rs 5,801 crore Lucknow Metro Rail Project
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project with 12 stations, across a length of 11.165 km with an investment of Rs 5,801 crore. While seven of these stations are to be built underground, five of them will be at an elevated level. On operationalisation of Phase-1B, Lucknow city will have 34 km of active metro rail network. Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro project will introduce approximately 11.165 km of new metro lines, significantly improving public transportation in the oldest and most densely populated areas of the city, which currently lack efficient connectivity, according to a Cabinet communique. This phase aims to seamlessly integrate key zones of old Lucknow, including commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk, critical healthcare facilities, most notably the King George's Medical University (Medical College) and major tourist attractions, including the Bara Imambara, the Chota Imambara, the Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza. The metro will also provide easier access to the culinary destinations known for the city's rich and historic food culture. By bridging these vital areas with the metro network, Phase-1B will not only enhance connectivity but also stimulate economic activity, tourism, and ease urban mobility for both residents and visitors, the statement said. Metro Rail is an efficient alternative to road transport, and with Phase-1B as an extension to the Metro Rail network, Lucknow is expected to alleviate traffic congestion. It will be particularly impactful on the heavily congested routes of old Lucknow. Reduction in road traffic will lead to smoother movement of vehicles, reduction in travel time, and increased overall road safety. The metro rail network will also significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuel-based transport. Reduced travel times and improved access to different parts of the city, such as the airport, railway stations, and bus depots, are expected to enhance productivity by allowing individuals to reach their workplaces and destinations more efficiently. Also, the enhanced connectivity can stimulate local businesses, especially in areas near new metro stations, which can also attract investment and development in previously less accessible regions, the statement said. Maharashtra Cabinet okays recruitment of 15,000 police personnel
The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday approved the recruitment of around 15,000 police personnel in the state police force. The decision follows the announcement by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who heads the Home Department, during the monsoon session of the Assembly that a recruitment drive for the police department is underway. The initiative is part of a 150-day programme aimed at restructuring the police department, updating rules, ensuring compassionate appointments, and identifying vacancies. CM Fadnavis had said that the state government has already recruited 38,802 police personnel between 2022 and 2025, and a proposal for recruiting an additional 13,560 police posts has also been submitted. The Cabinet also cleared the decision to increase the margins of ration shopkeepers in the state. Minister of Food and Civil Supplies Chhagan Bhujbal said that the Cabinet gave the approval to increase the margin amount of ration shopkeepers who provide food grain to eligible beneficiaries of the National Food Security Scheme (Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Households) under the state's public distribution system. Bhujbal said, 'The margin rate currently being given to the fair price shopkeepers for distribution of food grains to ration card holders through e-POS machines under the public distribution system in the state has been increased by Rs 20 per quintal (Rs 200 per metric tonne). This will result in an estimated annual additional financial burden of Rs 92.71 crore on the State Exchequer.' In other decisions, the Cabinet also decided to provide viability gap funding for Solapur-Pune-Mumbai air travel. The government also gave approval to relax the guarantor conditions in various loan schemes implemented by corporations under the jurisdiction of the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance. The government guarantee has been extended for five years.
