Govt announces discount on trade licence renewal for shops using Odia on signboards
Bhubaneswar: To promote use of Odia language in public spaces, the Odisha govt has announced a 5% discount on trade license renewal fees for shops and commercial establishments that use Odia script on their signboards. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The housing and urban development department issued a notification on Wednesday to ensure compliance with the Orissa Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956, which mandates the use of Odia on signboards. Citing Rule 32 of the 1958 Rules framed under the Act, the govt reiterated that every business outlet must display its name prominently in Odia script. "To promote and protect the rich cultural and linguistic heritage of Odisha, the state govt shows its strong commitment and helps the public who do not understand any other language or script except Odia," read the notification. All municipal corporations, municipalities, and urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state will ensure that shops and commercial establishments in their areas are using Odia billboards. Official sources said despite repeated directives in the past, many establishments continue to flout the rule by using only English or other scripts. The latest circular warns that strict action will be taken against violators while offering a financial incentive to encourage compliance. "All shop owners and business operators are hereby directed to prominently use Odia in at least 60% of the signages. Non-compliance will attract penal action," the order stated. "To encourage more shops and business establishments to use Odia scripts, the govt has offered a 5% discount on the renewal of their trade licenses. The discount can be availed on the SUJOG and portals," it read. Urban local bodies have been instructed to strictly enforce the rule across their jurisdictions and submit a report about adherence within the next 60 days. The govt's decision has been welcomed by language activists, who have long demanded stricter implementation of the policy to safeguard the identity and dignity of Odia language.

LONDON: In China, wait times for US visa interviews are so long that some students have given up. Universities in Hong Kong are fielding transfer inquiries from foreign students in the US, and international applications for British undergraduate programs have surged. President Donald Trump's administration has been pressuring US colleges to reduce their dependence on international enrollment while adding new layers of scrutiny for foreign students as part of its crackdown on immigration. The US government has sought to deport foreign students for participating in pro-Palestinian activism. In the spring, it abruptly revoked the legal status of thousands of international students, including some whose only brush with law enforcement was a traffic ticket. After reversing course, the government paused new appointments for student visas while rolling out a process for screening applicants' social media accounts. The US remains the first choice for many international students, but institutions elsewhere are recognising opportunity in the upheaval, and applicants are considering destinations they might have otherwise overlooked. The impact on US universities - and the nation's economy - may be significant. New international enrollment in the US could drop by 30% to 40% this fall, according to an analysis of visa and enrollment data by NAFSA, an agency that promotes international education. Sanskrit University launches employment project for students
Kochi: With the aim of preparing students in a way that ensures employment alongside education, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS), Kalady, has launched Vijnana Employment Project. The project is being implemented in collaboration with Kerala Knowledge Economy Mission. Phase I of the project is designed to benefit final-year students of Kalady main campus and university's various regional centres. The project will be launched within this academic year, with the official inauguration scheduled for Sept. According to SSUS vice-chancellor K K Geethakumari, the initiative will offer students orientation in various sectors, including employment and self-employment ventures. Skill gaps relevant to their educational qualifications will be identified with the help of faculty and employers from the respective fields. All students will be provided with mandatory soft skill training, including interview preparation and English language proficiency. University also plans to secure CSR funding to ensure student access to advanced skill development courses and conduct a placement drive in Dec.
