BJP MLA calls Minister Gundu Rao victim of ‘reverse love jihad'

Hans India06-05-2025

Mangaluru: In a fresh escalation of political rhetoric in coastal Karnataka, BJP MLA Harish Poonja has accused Congress leader and Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao of being biased against Hindus, even going so far as to describe him as a victim of 'reverse love jihad' — a controversial and politically charged term often invoked by right-wing groups.
Poonja, who represents Beltangady in Dakshina Kannada district, was reacting to recent remarks made by Gundu Rao, who had reportedly labelled the BJP legislator a 'serial offender.' The Congress minister is also the district in-charge for Dakshina Kannada.
'If I am a serial offender, he is someone who underwent reverse love jihad,' Poonja said, referring to Gundu Rao's interfaith marriage. 'Love jihad is when Muslim men marry Hindu women to convert them. In his case, it's the reverse — a Muslim woman married him,' the MLA alleged, suggesting that such personal choices reflected the minister's ideological biases.
Accusing Gundu Rao of being more sympathetic towards Muslims than Hindus, Poonja further claimed: 'He sees Hindus as third-class citizens. That is our misfortune.'
The BJP legislator also hit out at the Congress government for what he described as 'targeted' legal action against him. 'After this government came to power, nine cases were filed against me. But I am ready to face anything for the Hindu cause. My people elected me with over two lakh votes. I don't need validation from anyone else.'
The comments come amid growing tension in the region following the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty — a case that BJP leaders allege has ideological links and which they believe should be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Poonja's remarks are likely to intensify the ongoing war of words between the BJP and Congress in Karnataka's coastal belt — a region often at the centre of communal and ideological flashpoints in the state.

NIA to take over probe into explosives loot

Bhubaneswar: National Investigation Agency (NIA) is all set to take over the investigation from Odisha police into the loot of industrial explosives by Maoists from a stone quarry in Sundargarh district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Considering the gravity of the offence, the NIA has obtained an order from its designated court in Bhubaneswar to suo motu take over the probe from K Balang police under Rourkela police district. They will officially take over the case files in a day or two," a senior police officer told TOI. The police officer said, "The central counter-terrorism probe agency was assisting K Balang police in the investigation. An NIA team had visited the crime scene at the stone quarry in Banko on May 28, a day after the loot took place." This marks the first case undertaken by the NIA's Odisha branch following the establishment of its police station in Bhubaneswar last month, police sources said. On Sunday, Rourkela police arrested Maoist informer George Munda (43), a local, for allegedly collaborating with Maoists from Jharkhand in the theft of 5,000 kg of gelatin sticks on May 27. Around 3,800 kg of explosives have been recovered. NIA intends to interrogate Munda in their custody to establish 'forward and backward' linkages related to the offence having multi-state ramification. Police sources revealed that Munda had several meetings with Maoist leader Anmol alias Lalchand Hembram before the explosives theft. His arrest raised concerns for security agencies, as Sundargarh had been declared Maoist-free by the ministry of home affairs in April 2024. The police officer added, "Given the Centre's target to wipe out Maoists from the country by March 2026, the NIA's involvement in the case investigation is essential to unravel a potential bigger anti-national crime plan of the rebels."

Congress begins restructuring of block units across Rajasthan

The Opposition Congress in Rajasthan has initiated an organisational exercise to constitute block committees across all Assembly constituencies and fill vacant posts in a bid to strengthen the party's structure ahead of the local body elections. While 80% of the block committees have been formed, the appointment of District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents will be carried out by the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Govind Singh Dotasra, who met Assembly coordinators from the State's seven divisions on Monday and Tuesday, said that a list of booth-level agents would be finalised within the next seven days. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had directed the State leadership during the Samvidhan Bachao rally held on April 28 to complete all pending appointments within two months. Mr. Dotasra said the party would allocate 50% of tickets in the upcoming urban local body and Panchayati Raj elections to candidates below the age of 50. 'This will help us in confronting the Bharatiya Janata Party government which is neither focused on people's welfare nor interested in continuing the schemes launched by the previous [Congress] regime,' he said. Around two dozen Pradesh Congress cells and departments, which were dissolved during the 2020 political crisis triggered by former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot's rebellion, are yet to be reconstituted. Though eight new district units were created in April, their respective heads are yet to be appointed. Mr. Dotasra said City Congress units would be set up in all 249 Municipal Council areas across the State, aimed at reinforcing the party's presence at the grassroots level. These units will encompass both urban and rural regions within the blocks, with committee formation expected to be completed before June 28. The PCC chief stated that the party had collected feedback on the activities of Assembly coordinators, their constituency visits, meeting attendance by senior leaders, and the public issues raised by elected representatives in panchayats and local bodies. This input, he said, would aid in achieving the organisational targets within the stipulated time. Mr. Dotasra held one-on-one interactions with coordinators from Jaipur, Udaipur, and Kota divisions on Monday, and with those from Bharatpur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner divisions on Tuesday. He directed them to follow the party's schedule of activities and ensure that block committees play a key role in the forthcoming local body and panchayat elections.
