Tamim Iqbal suffers heart attack during DPL match

Tamim Iqbal, former Bangladesh captain, was rushed to the hospital after suffering a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match in Savar on Monday.
The 36-year-old was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club at BKSP when he felt chest pain. After receiving medical attention, he was taken to a nearby hospital for tests.
"He complained of chest pain and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he underwent an ECG," said BCB chief physician Debashish Chowdhury. "There was a minor issue, and sometimes, it is difficult to immediately assess the condition of the heart."
His first blood test showed irregularities, but Tamim initially wanted to return to Dhaka. However, as he was leaving the hospital, his chest pain returned, and he was taken back. Doctors then confirmed that he had suffered a major heart attack. He is now receiving treatment at Fazilatunnesa Hospital.
Tamim is undergoing an emergency procedure to insert a stent and improve blood flow.
In response to the situation, several Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directors are traveling to Savar, and a board meeting scheduled for Monday has been postponed.
Tamim retired from international cricket in 2023 but continued playing in domestic tournaments. His condition is being closely monitored, and further updates are expected.
Tamim has been one of the greatest ever players for Bangladesh, representing it in 391 matches across formats between 2007 and 2023. He has more than 15,000 international runs under his belt and is the only Bangladeshi batsman to score centuries in all three international formats.
BD court orders seizure of Shakib-ul-Hasan's assets
A Bangladeshi court ordered the seizure of cricketer Shakib Al Hasan's assets in the latest legal headache for the sports star over his allegiance to the country's former leader.
Shakib is a former lawmaker from the party of autocratic ex-leader Sheikh Hasina, who was overthrown in a student-led uprising last year and fled by helicopter to neighbouring India.
His links to Hasina made him a target of public anger and he was among dozens facing murder investigations for a deadly police crackdown on protesters during the uprising.
He has not been charged over those allegations but is currently being prosecuted on fraud charges for allegedly bouncing cheques totalling more than $300,000. A magistrate in the capital Dhaka ordered the seizure on Monday after a warrant for Shakib's arrest was issued by the court in January.
Shakib was playing in a domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in Canada when Hasina's government collapsed and has not returned to Bangladesh since.
The left-arm allrounder has played 71 Tests, 247 one-day internationals and 129 Twenty20s for Bangladesh, taking a combined 712 wickets.

Senegal stun England to put Tuchel under pressure

Photo: AFP England slumped to a 3-1 home friendly defeat by Senegal on Tuesday to ramp up the scrutiny on boss Thomas Tuchel one year out from the World Cup. Goals from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly inflicted England's first ever defeat against African opposition at Nottingham Forest's City Ground after Harry Kane had given the hosts an early lead. Tuchel was scathing in his criticism of his side's dreary display in beating minnows Andorra just 1-0 in World Cup qualifying on Saturday. The German, who was appointed with the task of ending England's wait since 1966 for a major tournament win, suffered his first defeat in four games in charge. "We need to see the players under these kinds of conditions against one of the top 20 teams in the world to be smarter," said Tuchel. "We don't go next week to the World Cup. We go in one year." Tuchel responded by making 10 changes, with Kane the only player to retain his place. It took just seven minutes for the Bayern Munich striker to maintain his record of scoring in every game since Tuchel took charge. Brazil, Ecuador book World Cup berths

Photo: AFP Brazil booked their place at the 2026 World Cup in North America on Tuesday with a lacklustre 1-0 home victory over Paraguay, the first win of Carlo Ancelotti's reign. The five-time world champions — the only team to appear in every edition of the World Cup — punched their ticket to the finals in Canada, the United States and Mexico thanks to Vinicius Jr. The Real Madrid star bundled home from close range in the 44th minute in Sao Paulo after a cross from new Manchester United signing Matheus Cunha. Uruguay's 2-0 win over Venezuela in Montevideo had raised the prospect of qualification for both Brazil and Paraguay at Corinthians Arena. Paraguay were left needing only a point to qualify while Brazil knew they could advance with a win in Ancelotti's second game in charge. In the event it was Brazil who seized the opportunity presented by Venezuela's loss with Vinicius scoring the only goal just before half-time. Brazil had struggled to create many chances up until that point, with Cunha squandering a golden chance in the 35th minute after heading wide from point-blank range. Cunha made up for it with a key part in the goal, capitalising on good work from Raphinha to dart into the box and whip in a low cross for Vinicius, who stabbed home the finish. The win lifted Brazil into third place in the South American standings with 25 points from 16 games, guaranteeing them a top-six finish and an automatic qualifying berth. The defeat leaves Paraguay with 24 points, meaning they need one point to secure their first World Cup appearance since 2010. The top six finishers in South America qualify automatically for the World Cup, with the seventh-placed team advancing to an intercontinental playoff. Bolivia defeated Chile 2-0 to end the former South American champions' hopes of qualification. It is the third straight World Cup that Chile have missed out loss continues a dramatic fall from grace for 'La Roja', who won back-to-back Copa Americas in 2015 and 2016.
