Opinion: A warning about warning labels on social media
We don't put a sticker on a slot machine that says 'This may be addictive' and expect compulsive gamblers to stop. So why would it work for Instagram?
In a bold move aimed at addressing youth mental health, New York lawmakers have passed a bill requiring warning labels on social media platforms. These labels — modelled after those on cigarette packages — are meant to inform users, especially teens, of the mental health risks of excessive screen time.
The intentions are commendable. But is this an effective strategy?
The core issue with this approach is the assumption that rational, conscious decision-making can override the powerful unconscious mechanisms that drive social media use. That's simply not how the brain works.
Social media platforms don't operate on the surface level of logic and reason. They target our attention through the brain's deeper reward systems — particularly the mesolimbic dopamine pathway, which governs motivation, craving and pleasure.
When a user gets a like, a notification or even just sees a red badge on an app icon, dopamine is released. Over time, the brain starts associating cues — like the glow of a phone screen or a buzz in the pocket — with the possibility of a reward. These are the hallmarks of behavioural addiction.
Enter the warning label. It appeals to the conscious mind, attempting to insert logic into a process already hijacked by unconscious conditioning. But by the time a user sees it, their brain has already been primed. It's like trying to stop a stampede with a cardboard sign.
Worse still, for users who are already sensitized — those whose brains have developed strong cue-reward associations — the warning itself may become a cue. Just as a 'sensitive content' tag on Instagram can spark more curiosity and engagement, a warning label may inadvertently trigger dopamine anticipation. The warning becomes part of the loop.
We've seen this before. In Buyology: Truth and Lies About Why We Buy, Danish author Martin Lindstrom explains how warnings on cigarette packages have not significantly reduced smoking in many populations. Even graphic warnings, while more effective than plain text, are too abstract to compete with the immediate hit of nicotine.
Similarly, a warning about social media's addictive features won't stand a chance against the instant pleasure of receiving a like or seeing a new comment. In fact, some studies suggest young users may interpret warnings as a challenge — or as a sign that the content is more exciting. Psychologists call this the 'Pandora effect.'
There's also the risk of desensitization. If users see the same warning every time they open TikTok or Instagram, it quickly becomes background noise — something to scroll past without a second thought.
And if the warning is too strong, it can backfire and push users toward more social media use, a phenomenon known as the 'boomerang effect.' Once the brain realizes that the warning doesn't restrict access or carry consequences, it begins filtering it out entirely — just like cigarette warning labels.
The solution to digital overuse and declining mental health won't come from superficial labels. It needs to come from structural design changes: adding small barriers or pauses to interfaces, reducing addictive features like infinite scroll, implementing default timeouts and offering tools that encourage reflection and self-regulation.
It also requires education — not just about 'risk,' but about how social media manipulates attention and exploits the brain's wiring.
Empowering users with an understanding of how algorithms work, how reward systems shape behaviour and how their own brains respond is far more effective than a generic warning. Mindfulness, digital literacy and self-regulation should be integrated into education systems — starting in schools.
Good intentions aren't enough. If we want to build a healthier digital future for youth — and adults— we must design for how the brain actually works, not how we wish it did.

Fitness: Putting 10 per cent rule to the test
Despite being armed with a wealth of training data from smart watches, the latest in shoe design and an abundance of research suggesting the optimum stride length, foot strike and cadence, runners still get injured at an alarmingly high rate. Statistics vary, but about 65 per cent of runners are sidelined by injury during any given year. Much of those injuries are related to overuse or, in the case of many runners, too steep an incline in mileage over too short a period of time. Doing too much too soon is a common training error made by even the most seasoned runners. Yet little is known about exactly how much is too much. The 10 per cent rule is a commonly quoted guideline, suggesting any sudden increase in mileage over 10 per cent is a precursor to injury. Normally, increases in training volume are calculated from week to week, but there's been some suggestion it takes less than a week for an overuse injury to settle in, a theory a Danish team of researchers put to the test. 'In running, emerging evidence from our research shows that few runners report symptoms before an injury occurs,' the researchers said. 'This suggests that runners may be more vulnerable when increasing distance too rapidly within a single session.' The researchers recruited 5,205 runners (4,053 male, 1,152 female) from North America and Europe who were a median age of 45.8 years with an average of 9.5 years of running experience. Using data from their Garmin watches to determine training load, the researchers calculated any increase in distance by comparing the length of a single training session to the longest run in the previous 30 days (15k/10k=50% increase) over an 18-month period or about 80 running sessions. Increases in training volume of the total cohort were grouped into four categories: regression (running less than the longest run — 10 per cent increase), a small spike (11-30 per cent), moderate spike (31-100 per cent) and a large spike (greater than 100 per cent). Injuries were self-reported. Of the 5,205 runners, 35 per cent (1,820) reported an injury of which 72 per cent (1,311) were considered overuse. Small spikes in distance increased the risk of injury by 64 per cent. Moderate spikes resulted in a 52 per cent bump in risk and large spikes in training volume increased the risk of injury by 128 per cent. Injury rates were not affected when using a weekly (versus a single session) ratio to calculate spikes in running volume. 'These findings suggest a paradigm shift in understanding running-related injuries, indicating that most injuries occur due to an excessive training load in a single session, rather than gradual increases over time,' the researchers said. That shift in understanding relates to the current theory that broadly states weekly increases in volume of 10 per cent or less will keep most runners safe from injury. But it looks like increasing the distance of a single run is the real culprit behind many overuse injuries. And even a modest 10 per cent increase isn't without risk. 'Although not statistically significant, a progression between one per cent and 10 per cent translated into an increased rate of 19 per cent, compared with regression or progression up to one per cent,' the researchers said. This discovery is especially important to novice runners, runners who are gradually increasing their training volume in preparation for a longer run (10k, half-marathon and marathon distances) and runners recovering from an extended time away from running. It's common during weekly progressions to increase the distance of a single long run by 10 per cent or more and keep the rest of the weekly runs similar in distance. But it looks like it would be more prudent to either spread those weekly changes in running volume over several runs or keep any increases to a single run to less than 10 per cent, especially if you're prone to injury or or coming back from an injury. That means revising most training calendars designed to prepare runners for a marathon or half-marathon. Instead of taking 16-20 weeks for novices and 12-16 weeks for more experienced runners, plan on giving your body even more time to adapt to longer runs. And since most on-line training programs plan their long run progression on a week-to-week basis, it means doing the math and changing weekly mileage goals to ensure no single run is more than 10 per cent longer than the previous run. 'Notably, a spike of 10 per cent in single-session running distance significantly increased the rate of overuse running-related injuries, with the risk sharply rising when the distance more than doubled,' the researchers said. Keep in mind this study only focused on injury as it's related to training volume. Other training errors like not enough recovery or rest, changes in terrain, poor technique and inconsistent training can contribute to injury. So, too, can inherent biomechanical issues like a faulty foot strike, a mismatch between runner and footwear and muscle imbalances. With injuries so prevalent among runners, understanding how to better manage increases in training volume is an opportunity to stay healthier longer.

'Japanese walking' a fun way for some to boost their health
It's no magic bullet, but a recent TikTok trend could boost your health without too much extra legwork. Users of the social media app are spreading the gospel of high-intensity interval walking, after latching onto a nearly 20-year-old Japanese study (new window) that touted some health benefits for older and middle-aged people. The 2007 study found the technique of switching back and forth between periods of high-intensity and more relaxed walking — a technique TikTokers are calling Japanese walking because of the study's country of origin — could do more to lower blood pressure and build muscle and aerobic capacity than the same amount of continuous walking at a more moderate pace. Participants in the 2007 study did three minutes of fast walking, followed by three minutes of slower walking, for 30 minutes per day at least four days per week. Subsequent studies have also found the technique (new window) to have a range of potential health benefits. While it may seem obvious that working a little bit harder on your walk will be better for your body, Nancy Salbach, professor at the University of Toronto's Rehabilitation Sciences Institute, said high-intensity interval walking is accessible to many people who are not necessarily used to aerobic exercise. You need to get your heart rate up; you need that three minutes of high intensity. That's what's pushing you over the edge to get greater benefits than just walking at a moderate pace, she said. You probably can do better if you can do 30 minutes of running, but not everybody wants to go for a run. If possible, she says, it's also best to do with a friend or in a group. Then you have the chance for social interaction, social support, and that can make the whole activity more enjoyable. Getting out is key, prof says Some TikTok users are touting high-intensity interval walking as a way to save time, to allow people who are used to taking longer, slower walks to meet their health goals. Fitness coach and content creator Eugene Teo, in a video that has nearly a million likes, claims it offers 10 times the benefits of walking 10,000 steps per day. Stephen Cheung, professor and senior research fellow at Brock University's kinesiology department, says the exercise will provide maybe five per cent more health benefits on average than walking at a normal, continuous pace. Some have also suggested it's a way to lose weight, though Cheung says the exercise won't necessarily burn many more calories than more moderate walking. But he still encourages people to try the technique, saying it offers the psychological motivation of doing something different than a normal walk. He also urges walkers not to get hung up on the details. It doesn't have to be kind of really regimented in terms of, there's this optimal interval of three minutes on, two minutes off, he said. I don't want people to think, 'Oh, I need a stopwatch. I need the latest kind of tracker to do this.' Every so often, whenever you feel like it, just pick up the pace a little bit and then slow down and go back to your normal pace. Canada's 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults (new window) recommend 150 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity for people aged 18 to 64, which amounts to 30 minutes, five days per week. The guidelines also recommend doing muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week. The important thing, Cheung says, is to get out and walk, regardless of how you do it. As with any fitness trend, it's not the one magic bullet. There is no one perfect exercise for that's going to fit everyone, he said. This is just another tool in your arsenal.
