Cleary equaliser rescues point for Shamrock Rovers in intense derby with Shels

Irish Examiner25-04-2025

SSE Airtricity Premier Division: Shamrock Rovers: 2 Shelbourne FC: 2
Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne couldn't be separated in full-blooded Ringsend Derby, drawing for the second time this season.
Matt Healy's first of the season put his side ahead at the break before Ali Coote and Mipo Odubeko flipped the game on its head. Dan Cleary equalised shortly after as 7,317 watched on intently.
With 10 minutes played the visitors almost took the lead through a smart set-piece in which Evan Caffrey played a short one-two with Harry Wood, and as the ball came back to his feet Caffrey curled an inswinging cross-shot that almost caught out Ed McGinty at his back post.
The Hoops, who had been unbeaten in seven prior to Monday's madness, went straight down the other end as the game began to open. The in-form Jack Byrne tried to find young striker Michael Noonan over the top. On the stretch, Sam Bone couldn't clear as the ball fell to Noonan's feet in the box. And full of confidence from his stunning solo effort against Bohs, he beat his man while trying to fashion a yard to shoot before being snuffed out.
In their third massive Dublin Derby in a week, the hosts continued to push and forced a couple of set-pieces as they tried to build ahead of steam but as the game approached the midway point of the first half, the last two teams to lift the title persisted in cancelling each other out as a fascinating tactical battle developed.
The tension could be cut with a knife and it was going to take something special to break the deadlock and just before the half hour mark Matt Healy provided just that. Having been tee'd up by Byrne about 25-yards out, the former Irish under-21 star opened his body, shaping to bend the ball to the right, and reversed his sweeping strike into the near post - with the disguise on the shot seemingly catching out Conor Kearns who had already taken a step in anticipation of where it seemed Healy was going to put it and couldn't get back across his goal in time.
Less than two minutes after the restart Noonan spurned a great one-on-one chance to have latched onto a high Healy ball over the top. The talented 16-year-old did everything right going low across goal but Kearns saved sharply with his feet.
Things looked to be going from bad to worse for Duff as his own star midfielder Kerr McInroy was forced off with an innocuous looking injury but his replacement Ali Coote wasted no time in introducing himself levelling with his first touch.
James Norris picked out Harry Wood at the back post with a deep cross and the Englishman headed down in the area for the Scotsman to sweep home.
And just after the hour mark The Champions completed the turnaround when Odubeko showed great movement to get in between two defenders and fire the ball home first time from an inch perfect Kameron Ledwidge cross from the left.
The lead lasted only a couple of minutes though as it was the hosts' turn to equalise. A goalmouth scramble ensued following an outswing Byrne corner and Lee Grace kept the ball alive, drilling across goal for Dan Cleary to force over the line on the stretch.
Members of both benches had to be held back as tensions boiled over on the sidelines when Shels refused to put the ball out of play for Watts who was down holding the back of his leg.
But despite both sides' best efforts, neither could find that elusive winner in a breathless encounter.
SHAMROCK ROVERS: McGinty; Cleary (Cory O'Sullivan, 75'), Lopes, Grace; Grant (Ozhianvuna, 88'), Watts (Matthews, 80'), Healy, Byrne, Honohan; Burke (Greene, 88'), Noonan
SHELBOURNE: Kearns; Bone (Gannon, 50'), Coyle, Ledwidge; Caffrey, Lunney, Chapman (O'Sullivan, 88'), Norris; McInroy (Coote, 50'), Wood, Odubeko
Referee: Paul McLoughlin (Donegal)

Life beyond the touchline: Stuart Lancaster's new chapter in Ireland

As Stuart Lancaster begins his next chapter as head coach of Connacht Rugby, the former England boss is once again calling Ireland home – but this time, without the constant commute. Lancaster spent seven years with Leinster Rugby, earning praise for helping build a high-performance culture and guiding the team to multiple titles. Off the pitch, however, life wasn't always seamless, as for much of that time, Lancaster was commuting between Dublin and his family home in Leeds. Pic: INPHO/Tom Maher Despite the demanding schedule, he made it work. His wife, Nina, and their two children remained in the UK, with Lancaster frequently flying home on weekends to be with them. In interviews, he often acknowledged the strain but spoke about how supportive his family had been throughout his career. 'It's worked surprisingly well,' he once said of the arrangement to The 42, 'The family are used to being away from home with the England job. This is actually closer to home than Twickenham was'. Stuart and Nina Lancaster. Pic: Harry Murphy/Sportsfile Nina Lancaster is a fitness, nutrition, and wellness expert, and runs her own coaching and consulting business. While Stuart's coaching took him abroad, she remained based in the UK to support their children, Dan and Sophie, and manage her own professional commitments. When news of Stuart's Connacht appointment was announced, Nina shared her excitement online, posting on social media: ' Looking forward to our next venture in Galway.' His son, Dan Lancaster, is an English professional rugby union player currently with Racing 92. He has previously played for Leicester Tigers in the Premiership, as well as for Ealing Trailfinders, Leeds Tykes, and Nottingham in the RFU Championship. Now, based in Galway for his new role with Connacht, Lancaster is enjoying a more settled experience in Ireland. The move to the west of the country marks a significant shift – not just professionally, but personally. With Connacht's state-of-the-art High Performance Centre and a strong local rugby culture, he has spoken enthusiastically about being part of a project he believes in from the ground up. Although Lancaster keeps his family life relatively private, it's clear his wife and children remain a core part of his decision-making. He has previously mentioned how his children's milestones, from finishing school to starting university, impacted his choices about where and how to work. Ireland has played an important role in Lancaster's coaching journey. His time at Leinster helped rebuild his reputation after England's 2015 World Cup exit and gave him a real appreciation for the Irish rugby culture. Now in Galway, he's deepening that connection, taking on a new challenge while enjoying a more balanced life off the pitch.

Ireland newcomer set for first start in friendly against Luxembourg after impressing vs Senegal

KILLIAN Phillips is in line for his first Ireland start tomorrow night. The Crystal Palace midfielder - who had an impressive season-long loan at St Mirren - Advertisement 2 Heimir Hallgrimsson handed Phillips his debut on Friday against Senegal 2 Killian Phillips impressed at St. Mirren which earned him his debut And it appears as though the Dubliner will be rewarded for his display off the bench with a place in In a departure from the norm, Heimir Hallgrímsson allowed the media to stay for the entire eve-of-match training session. Usually, journalists, photographers and camera operators are allowed in for only the first 15 minutes meaning all they see is the warm-up. But he gave the green light for the media to stay for the full session and, as a result, saw a full 11 v 11 match after several drills. Advertisement Read more on Irish football And that gave an insight into the team Hallgrímsson is likely to pick for the final game of the season, mainly consisting of players wearing orange bibs. If that is the case, it would mean four changes from the team which drew with Senegal with Phillips, Liam Scales, Evan Ferguson and Troy Parrott coming in for Ryan Manning, Dara O'Shea, Adam Idah and Jack Taylor. The team in organe had Caoimhín Kelleher behind a back four of Matt Doherty, Nathan Collins, Scales and Robbie Brady. The orange team had a midfield four of Kasey McAteer, Bosun Lawal, John Joe Patrick Finn and Will Smallbone and a forward pairing of Ferguson and Parrott. Advertisement Most read in Football Live Blog After a water break, Josh Honohan was subbed in for Brady - and immediately floored Festy Ebosele with a firm challenge - with Josh Keely coming in for Kelleher. Max O'Leary was between the posts for the blue team with his back four comprising Jake O'Brien, Andrew Omobamidele, O'Shea and Manning. The 1% Club viewers in awe as 'genius' footballer wins £100k for charity - but would you have got final question right? The midfield quartet consisted of Ebosele, Phillips, Jason Knight and Andrew Moran with Taylor supporting Idah, as he did on Friday. But it would seem a reach for Lawal and Finn to start. Advertisement Lawal was only added to the squad at the weekend and started just one game for Stoke City in an injury-hit season, at right-back, in their final league fixture. As recently as Thursday, Hallgrímsson said Finn had 'to grow a little bit more as a player to be starting for Ireland. He's done well in training but we see he needs to improve in certain areas.' Therefore, it seems likely that it will be the team in orange bibs - bar the central midfield pairing - which will take the field against Luc Holtz's side. Phillips, 23, is a classic late developer. Having been overlooked by League of Ireland academies, he was still playing in the DDSL with Kilbarrack United before being signed by Drogheda United in 2020. Advertisement He had to wait until the following season to make the breakthrough at first-team level but his form resulted in a move to Palace in January 2022. He has yet to play for their first team but has gained considerable experience during loan spells with Shrewsbury Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Aberdeen and St Mirren. Of the five uncapped squad members - O'Leary, Keeley, Honohan, Finn and Lawal - the Bristol City keeper and versatile Shamrock Rovers player look most likely to win their first cap off the bench. IRELAND (probable): Kelleher (Brentford); Doherty (Wolves), Collins (Brentford), Scales (Celtic), Brady (Preston North End); McAteer (Leicester City), Phillips (Crystal Palace), Knight (Bristol City), Smallbone (Southampton); Parrott (AZ Alkmaar), Ferguson (Brighton). Irish 1,000 Guineas hero Lake Victoria ruled out of Royal Ascot

Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Lake Victoria has been ruled out of the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Undefeated in five juvenile starts last season, including Group One wins in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, the Cheveley Park and at the Breeders' Cup, Aidan O'Brien's filly was beaten into sixth place in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on her return to action but bounced back to her best in the Irish equivalent. The daughter of Frankel was expected to be a major part of the Ballydoyle handler's Ascot team next week, but owners Coolmore said in a post on X on Monday: 'Lake Victoria will not run at Royal Ascot. She will have an easy few weeks and will return for a late summer/autumn campaign.' The post also confirmed plans for Minnie Hauk and Whirl after the pair finished first and second in the Betfred Oaks at Epsom on Friday. It read: 'Epsom Oaks winner Minnie Hauk will target the Irish Oaks, while Whirl, who finished runner-up in the Epsom Oaks, will head for the Group One Pretty Polly Stakes.'
