
People are wearing nightgowns anywhere but to bed
Reformation's Holly Sleep Dress ($128), a floaty mini dress with a scrunched 1950s-style neckline with scalloped edges, was inspired by 'vintage nightgowns that you can probably get away with wearing out and about,' the brand's website read. Similarly, fellow cool-girl label Damson Madder noted that its Elspeth Nightdress ($67), which features dainty floral embroidery and a broderie hemline, is 'effortlessly wearable from night to day.' Meanwhile, If Only If — the British brand behind the scene-stealing nightgowns worn by Megan Stalter in Lena Dunham's Netflix series 'Too Much' — photographs models wearing their nighties with woven basket bags at the farmer's market or out in the countryside.
On TikTok, videos made using the hashtag #nightgown have increased 200% in the last 12 months. Content creators on Instagram are showing equal enthusiasm. 'I literally cannot stop buying vintage nightgowns,' influencer Bridget Brown told her 99,000 Instagram followers in a recent video,as she unboxed an embroidered, scoop-neck cotton nightie that flowed past her knees, bought secondhand from Facebook Marketplace. 'This is sexy for an Edwardian nightgown, let me tell you,' she added, her mouth agape with glee.
But braving the outside world in your intimates is not an entirely new concept. In the late 18th century, French artist Elizabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun painted a portrait of Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France, wearing a sloping straw hat and chemise dress — a typical undergarment for women at the time. The picture was initially displayed at Vigée Le Brun's first-ever exhibition at the prestigious Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1783, though the exposing nature of the queen's nightie was deemed too inappropriate for public viewership and quickly removed.
For years, designers have tried to harness that same feeling of shock, exposure and titillation by reimagining lingerie staples such as corsets, bras and nightdresses on the runway. For his Spring-Summer 1992 show in London, John Galliano honed in on the romanticism and sensuality of 19th-century slips typically worn in the French court. Named 'Napoleon and Josephine,' Galliano's collection included sheer nightdresses that revealed the bust entirely. At Calvin Klein's Spring-Summer 1995 show in New York, silky lace-trimmed nightgowns in black, stone grey and champagne hung off the frames of models like Kate Moss and Stella Tennant. If Galliano's collection was about capturing a theatrical sleepwear fantasy, Klein offered a version of nightgowns that were surprisingly sophisticated and even, at times, office appropriate. In 1997, Stella McCartney's debut as the designer of Chloé added to the conversation even further: With delicate spaghetti straps and pastel colors, the nightgowns that appeared on the runway were perhaps the most faithful to what could have really been worn to bed.
The tide has well and truly changed since the days of Marie Antoinette's portrait — even Princess Diana wore an inky blue and black lace-trimmed slip dress from Dior to the 1996 Met Gala. But where nightgowns have previously been used as a visual shorthand for sex appeal, with their skin-baring cuts and silky fabric, today's trend is driven by frumpier, more historically-accurate silhouettes.
Rachel Tashjian, fashion critic at the Washington Post, who also writes an invite-only newsletter called 'Opulent Tips,' has a cotton nightgown from the late 1800s she likes to wear while walking her dog in New York's Central Park on the weekends. 'The fabric is quite starchy, and it almost reminds me of wedding cake frosting,' she said over the phone. It once belonged, she thinks, to her husband's great grandmother. 'Pieces from that time, especially underpinnings, have all these incredible details of lacework and pin tucks and pleating,' she added.
Sandeep Salter, the co-founder of the New York-based clothing and homeware brand Salter House, says that organic cotton nightdresses and PJs are her most popular categories. 'New Yorkers know us for it and we continue to launch new designs periodically,' she wrote in an email. The frocks are inspired by a range of references — from the nightgowns first received by Salter from her mother when she was 13 years old to the original nightdress worn by Wendy Darling in 'Peter Pan.' One of Salter's designs, an oversized square-neck white cotton frock called 'The Lamb', was modelled after traditional 19th century French undergarments. 'We see our nightdresses styled into daywear in really nice ways,' Salter said. 'With a cardigan tied like a sash around the body, with a mini-heeled Mary Jane or ballet flats and a sharp purse.' She herself likes to pair a Salter nightgown with an oversized scrunchie and a baseball cap.
No matter how it's worn, the common thread between these romantic, loose-fitting gowns is comfort. It's a hangover, perhaps, from the pandemic-induced lockdowns of 2020, when people were mandated to stay home and sales of sweatpants surged (even Anna Wintour succumbed to their siren call). Two years later, when restrictions lifted post-pandemic, we slipped back into our jeans and slacks — but the hankering for comfort never left. 'It feels good, physically,' Salter said about the continued interest in gauzy gowns. Tashjian agreed, noting that nightdresses offer a more put-together alternative to baggy sweatpants.
The enduring popularity of nightwear styles isn't only being driven by women, either. At Milan's Men's Fashion Week in June, Dolce & Gabbana showed loungewear, slouchy separates and matching striped trousers and shirts that riffed off pajama sets.
Do recent fashion trends such as these have anything to do with a revival of conservative politics? 'I think a lot of this comes down to how the person is wearing it,' said Tashjian. 'There also is a world in which it's some conflation of this conservative, 'trad wife' style,' she said, referring to the rising trend of milkmaid dresses, full A-line skirts and puff-sleeve blouses. But many other young women are winking at this type of antiquated femininity while engaging with it. Take Prada's Spring-Summer 2023 show, where sheer, matronly nightdresses and housecoats were shown with heeled Mary Janes and tightly gripped clutch bags. 'It's a woman taking things that are assigned to a particular lane in life, and recontextualizing them in a way that's very naughty or mischievous or arrogant,' observed Tashjian.

Sabrina Carpenter's viral summer hit 'Manchild,' which has inspired dances, discourse, and social media buzz, calls out grown men behaving like children. Though aimed at a past relationship, the song echoes a broader frustration with men dodging responsibility at home. The pattern of feigned ignorance is familiar to family therapists. 'They pretend they aren't aware of things that most people with kids would have on their radar, like needing a teacher gift at the end of school,' Bonnie Scott, a licensed professional counselor at Mindful Kindness Counseling, told HuffPost. These habits can follow men for years, but some are forced to grow up fast. When Man-Children Are Responsible For Real Children Rene Garcia, now the owner and lead clinician at Garcia Mental Health, learned he was going to be a father at 23 while still in college. 'My first daughter was unplanned, and I had not graduated from college yet. I desperately wanted to be a support for her and felt powerless on how to do so.' Garcia's biggest challenge was confronting his inconsistency. 'I'm awesome at goal setting, but following through is different. You become unreliable and someone people don't trust. This destroys relationships with kids and partners.' The deeper issue was internal: 'Change makes you challenge things in yourself you have purposefully pushed down, possibly out of protection. What pushed me was wanting to stop the same patterns from happening over and over again.' He was confronting parts of himself he had ignored for years, and the cost of continuing old patterns had become impossible to ignore. While Garcia's awakening came through early parenthood, other men face their limitations during crisis. Thomas Westerholtz, a therapist and father, experienced his turning point when his son was diagnosed with a rare and life-limiting medical condition. 'When your child is fighting for their life, you can't hide behind performance. I realized I was 'doing' a lot — working, showing up — but not always emotionally present with my family. I wasn't holding space for fear, grief, or everyday vulnerability.' 'I used to quietly assume my partner would manage the emotional temperature of the household, birthdays, school forms, noticing when our kid was off. I wasn't actively avoiding it, but I wasn't owning it either. That left her burnt out and feeling alone.' When It's Time To Grow Up For men ready to change course, the hardest question they need to ask themselves, according to parenting psychologist Reena B. Patel, is whether they get defensive when asked to take responsibility. 'That defensiveness is usually a sign that you know you're not pulling your weight,' she said. Other warning signs include expecting partners to handle the majority of emotional labor and avoiding tasks until someone else steps in. Scott said the first step is uncomfortable but simple: 'Approach your partner and say, 'I want to make sure I'm doing my part in managing our life together. Could we sit together and talk about something like the weekly schedule?'' The goal isn't to take over but to participate with genuine interest. Planning was Garcia's breakthrough: 'PLAN! I never used to plan anything. Now, if I don't write it down or put it on my calendar, it won't happen.' Letting go of pride was the first hurdle Westerholtz had to face. Westerholtz now checks in weekly with his partner and uses a shared calendar with reminders like 'pack lunch' and 'doctor follow-up.' 'Visibility equals responsibility,' he said. These changes have brought broader impacts. 'There's less resentment. More tenderness. My partner doesn't have to mother me, and that makes space for partnership,' Westerholtz said. The change has also shaped how their son understands masculinity: 'I also see my son learning not just how to survive, but how to be a man who feels, apologizes, and holds others with care.' Consistency became the turning point in Garcia's relationship with his daughter, but it required moving beyond traditional activities. 'Being intentional with our time, and not just taking her to dinners or baseball games, but getting to know her personally, has built a relationship between us that is indescribable,' Garcia said. When Garcia volunteered as a WATCH D.O.G. (Dads of Great Students), seeing his daughter light up when he showed up for lunch made her feel supported at school and among friends. What Kind Of Man Do You Want To Be? These fathers are consciously breaking generational patterns. For Westerholtz, this transformation meant redefining what it means to be a man for his son. 'Before, I think I believed being a man meant protecting, fixing, and staying strong. Now I think it's about being present, especially when things are messy.' He tells his son it's OK to feel scared or sad, and that real strength means talking about emotions instead of shutting down: 'We talk about emotions like weather. They pass, but you don't need to pretend it's sunny when it's not.' This shift in emotional openness extends beyond family. In his male friendships, Westerholtz brings the same vulnerability. 'It used to be all banter and distraction, surface-level. But when I started being real about how hard things were with my son's health, I found that most men were relieved. Like they'd been waiting for someone to go first.' As he puts it: 'Vulnerability invites connection, not just with our partners, but with our mates too.' Patel notes that children benefit directly when fathers develop emotional maturity. 'They model respect, empathy, and resilience skills that their children will carry into adulthood. Partners also feel more supported, less stressed, and free to be individuals, not caretakers for another adult.' The 'manchild' label stings because it highlights a gap between how men see themselves and how they actually show up. Like Garcia and Westerholtz, I'm learning to show up differently for my sons. I need to be a father who is sometimes a friend, not a friend who is sometimes a father. That track meet taught me the hard way. Now, I check every appointment, every schedule, every exam and essay due date. Nothing has been missed since. My sons are 18 now, and my habit of double-checking everything still annoys them. Michelin-star chef Tom Kerridge had previously hit back at critics of his £37 fish and chips – but Archie's Fish and Chips Shop in Minster might just have him beat. The Extra Large Cod and Chips Special Meal is a whopping £65 to eat in – although admittedly that's designed to share between three or four people. That breaks down to between £21.60 and £16.25 per person, depending on how many people you have tucking in. Videos of the enormous meal have gone viral, with mighty fish lying on a towering bed of chips – a supersized version of the nation's favourite meal. The videos show the entire process of making the plate, from dipping large flanks of cod in batter, frying them, and arranging them on the plate. The price also includes mushy peas, a side of curry sauce, and tea. The meals are typically eaten in, served on a classic chippy plate with faux newspaper wrappings in the classic British way. Archie's Fish and Chips is run by Alex and Natalie Bovalyaev, who have run the place for the last 11 years. The idea for the massive meal was originally a special one-off for friends, but has quickly gained viral status online and been served to regular punters as well. It's even tempted in tourists from Peru, who complimented the size and flavour of the meal. 'My parents are from Peru and they really loved it,' said the customer. 'The presentation of the dish, the amount of chips – everything was perfect.' Since sharing the videos on their TikTok page, the chippy has gained over 100,000 followers on the platform, with as many as 3.9m views on the most popular video. The eatery also shares behind the scenes videos about how to run the chippy, as well as their promotional videos of their specialty platter. Archie's Fish and Chips can be found at 58-60 High Street, Minster, if you fancy giving the big plate a try for yourself – although you'll probably need to bring at least two or three others as back-up.

This week, however, the 65-year-old has had a difficult time on Diddly Squat Farm in Oxfordshire. The vet told Clarkson that one of the puppies had "failed", meaning there were now only 10 puppies left in Arya's litter. Clarkson had delivered the puppies himself, having recently found it was an unlikely talent of his when he helped deliver calves. At the same time as one of Arya's puppies dying, Clarkson also faced the bad news that Diddly Squat farm was hit with a bovine TB outbreak. A cow pregnant with twin calves has tested positive for the respiratory disease. Speaking about the bad news on Diddly Squat farm, he said on Friday: "It's awful, it is awful. You have a test every few months on the cows and then you sort of become blasé, it's a hypothetical threat." Announcing the death of the puppy for the first time, he added on Times Radio: "And then the vet looks up as he did yesterday lunchtime and said 'I'm really sorry this one's failed'. So that means we're now locked down and it's just dreadful, absolutely dreadful." Clarkson's Farm animal tragedies The ex-Top Gear presenter is an animal lover and this shines through on his Prime Video series, Clarkson's Farm. Diddly Squat farm has faced tragedies with animals in the past, leaving Clarkson devastated. In series three, Clarkson faced heartbreak as he helplessly watched piglets die one by one. Then he also had to make the difficult decision to put the ill piglet's mother Baroness down at the end of series three. He told the cameras: "I can't do this. I can't have pigs anymore. Honestly, it's a nightmare. I like them too much." Promoting the series at the time, the presenter had hinted there were "no happy endings" on farms. He said: "There was never a children's film in the Sixties and Seventies where it had a happy ending and I don't know what happened, but movie producers decided films needed happy endings, and that's what we've got used to. Well, farming doesn't have many happy endings, as we've discovered."
