Eurostar passengers face delays after two tragic incidents
Two separate incidents has caused widespread disruption to Eurostar services between London and Paris

Eurostar passengers experienced delays of up to seven hours after two individuals were tragically struck by trains. The distressing incident on Tuesday caused significant disruption for those travelling between London St Pancras International and Gare Du Nord in Paris, with many journeys cancelled entirely.
The operator warned that the disruption was expected to continue on Wednesday, June 25. "Due to two persons struck by trains near Lille Europe, we've delays and cancellations to our services all evening," Eurostar announced on X, adding: "We apologise to everyone affected and advise changing your journey for a different travel date."

Services between London and Paris were suspended shortly after 3pm.

One train, scheduled to arrive in Paris before 6pm, was still navigating the tunnels in northern France at 9.45pm, as reported by the Telegraph.
These delays followed two separate incidents; the first reportedly occurred between Lille and Paris around 5pm, and the second between Lille and Arras, according to local media, reports Yorkshire Live.
This morning, Eurostar cautioned via X that while trains will be running today, there are a "few cancellations" and "a lot of passengers travelling."

It added: "So the situation might still be difficult."
Eurostar has been left with no choice but to axe multiple train services - specifically the 9007, 9013, 9023, 9008, and 9018 - owing to a perfect storm of issues afflicting the rail network. Passengers are reeling from the consequences of yesterday's disruption and hold-ups at railway stations in the UK and France, only to have their woes worsened by the theft of a vital cable close to Lille.

Travellers expecting to board trains scheduled for 4.01pm, 6.01pm, and 8.01pm today have been hit by severe delays and cancellations, leading to a chorus of discontent on social media, with many now demanding refunds.
A distraught passenger vented on social media: "I've been on the 9032 for seven hours and we're still not in Paris," inquiring, "Will we get full compensation?"
Another disgruntled commuter threatened: "I'm going to need my full ticket refunded plus compensation. Five hours on board and now another three-hour delay."

As the situation continues to unfold, passenger Naomi Sanger revealed to KentOnline how her 4.31pm train out of Paris's Gare Du Nord station failed to depart, deserting her at the station.
Taking to the social media platform X, Ms. Sanger disclosed dwindling resources, including food and water, as well as the station's struggling air conditioning system.
This current turmoil is not the only issue to impact Eurostar recently on Wednesday, June 14.

Motoring experts from My Motor World have warned drivers of the potential risks posed to their vehicles. This comes after new data revealed a Welsh police force area saw over 50% year on year rise in vehicle thefts. ‌ Claims data from Admiral Insurance has revealed a fourfold increase in thefts of parking sensors from 2023 to 2024, with steering wheels also becoming a prime target for thieves. In January 2025, multiple luxury cars were stolen in one night at Cardiff's Whitchurch. ‌ This trend of stripping cars for parts is fuelling a surge in illegal "chop shops", where stolen vehicle components are sold on the black market. In April 2024, a man who made £178,000 running vehicle 'chop shop' was ordered to pay back £11,255. ‌ The most effective way to safeguard your car from thieves is to keep it hidden from view. Always park your car in a secure area, even for brief periods. ‌ For longer stays, private car parks and garages are the safest options as they typically feature locks and CCTV or other security measures. If these aren't accessible, then a well-lit area with high foot traffic may serve as a sufficient deterrent. Given that many of the stolen parts are from the front of the vehicle, it could be beneficial to park facing a wall where possible to make theft more challenging, reports Birmingham Live. Always ensure that your vehicle is locked and take your keys with you - not only is this safer, but many car insurance policies won't pay out if you haven't properly secured your car. ‌ While it's unlikely you'll recover your parts if they are stolen, marking them can aid the police in identification, potentially enabling you to retrieve your stolen parts. In some instances, marked parts can deter thieves who may be hesitant to steal a part that can be traced. Buyers of these parts might also recognise they have been stolen if they're marked, and could be more inclined to contact the police. ‌ Mark Barclay, Head of Ecommerce at My Motor World, remarks: "Like grand theft auto, car cannibalism is another big worry for car owners. "Because the parts that are stolen are so hard to retrieve and are of comparatively little value, it's very unlikely you'll get them back. Taking precautions against theft and ensuring you have insurance are the best ways to protect your car from cannibalism. "You may find it useful to keep a supply of spares in your home or a secure garage, particularly for parts like lights. An inquest jury found failures by HMP Swansea and the Swansea Bay University Health Board probably contributed to the death of 52-year-old David Bassett. Mr Bassett had been at the prison for only 36 hours when he was found hanged on December 1, 2019. He had arrived with warnings that he was at risk of suicide yet staff failed to start self-harm monitoring procedures. It comes after last month's scathing report into the death of another HMP Swansea prisoner, Mark Johnston. At Mr Bassett's inquest his family were represented by 30 Park Place Chambers, which said he had been remanded on an arson charge after pouring petrol around his house and on himself and threatening to burn down the home while staying inside. In her report prisons ombudsman Sue McAllister said: "This was his first time in prison for 10 years. Mr Bassett arrived at Swansea with suicide and self-harm warnings, which were recorded on his person escort record and on a suicide/self-harm warning form. "The record said that Mr Bassett was at risk of suicide and self-harm because he had tried to burn himself on November 27. The warning form said that Mr Bassett had tried to burn himself, was very depressed, that he had attempted hanging or self-strangulation in the last six months, and that he was being checked six times an hour. "Neither the reception nurse nor the reception officer considered that suicide and self-harm prevention procedures were needed. Nor did the duty governor who also saw Mr Bassett." When a nurse checked on Mr Bassett's cell at 5.43am on December 1 she found him hanged. The ombudsman reported that the prison's reception officer had seen the warnings but considered there was "no indication" that Mr Bassett was at risk of suicide as he was "relaxed" and "laughing and joking with other prisoners". Ms McAllister said: "Staff placed too much weight on Mr Bassett's appearance and what he told them rather than considering his documented risk factors. The failure to start self-harm prevention procedures was a missed opportunity to put support in place for Mr Bassett." During the inquest the health board's mental health nurse and some prison staff accepted they should have put in place the monitoring procedures. "Had that been done David may have been subject to increased observations in prison and should have had a cellmate on the second night," said 30 Park Place Chambers. The jury concluded the procedures should have been opened and that although insufficient information was provided to healthcare staff they could still have requested further information. These failures were probably causative of death, the jury found. A prison service spokeswoman said: "Our thoughts remain with the friends and family of David Bassett. We accepted all of the ombudsman's recommendations and took action to ensure that reception staff properly review and act on all relevant risk information provided upon a prisoner's arrival." The prison service says the jail's reception staff have been reminded of the correct procedures including the need to comprehensively review all documentation on an inmate's arrival. Swansea Bay University Health Board has been approached for comment. William Doheny, of Edward Street, Barry, sexually assaulted the primary school-aged girl when he was aged under 16. Doheny, now 20, committed the offences several years ago, a sentencing hearing at Swansea Crown Court on Monday, August 11, heard. The defendant would play games with his victim which then turned sexual and included wrestling, touching the girl's breasts and telling her that she needed to learn 'how to make out", the court was told. Prosecution barrister Rebecca Griffiths read a victim impact statement to the court which read: 'What has happened to me has had a lasting effect. Although this happened years ago I am massively struggling now to come to terms with what happened. 'William took advantage of me when I was younger. "I was completely vulnerable. To go to the police and tell them what happened and face the prospect of a trial in court terrified me. "I got to a point last year where I wanted to end my life. I feel guilty but the one who should feel guilty is William. He is the one who is responsible for this.' In mitigation barrister David Pinnell said Doheny is an 'able young man' who wants to 'put these matters behind him' and concentrate on gaining employment. Article continues below Having pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual activity with a child Doheny was sentenced by Judge Lucy Crowther to a two-year community order meaning he must complete a 20-day rehabilitation order and 250 hours of unpaid work. He was also made the subject of a restraining order prohibiting him from directly or indirectly contacting his victim for a period of five years.
