Fresh blow for Bulldogs as winger needs surgery
Montoya has had a mortgage on one wing spot since returning from a stint at the Warriors this year, but will go in for clean-out surgery after battling through pain in recent weeks.
The third-placed Bulldogs are confident the Fijian-born 29-year-old will return in time for finals.
The news is the last thing the Bulldogs needed after dropping back-to-back games to resurgent Penrith and Brisbane ahead of this weekend's away trip to Townsville.
Montoya looks set to miss tough clashes against the Sydney Roosters and Warriors during his six-week lay-off as the Bulldogs fight for their first top-two finish since 2012.
Highly rated internally for his impressive pre-season, Enari Tuala is a chance to join the backline after making his club debut in the Broncos loss, with Blake Wilson another option.
Coach Cameron Ciraldo could choose to keep Matt Burton at centre and Lachie Galvin and Toby Sexton as his halves after making a controversial late switch for the Broncos game.
But that would likely require moving either Bronson Xerri or captain Stephen Crichton to the wing.
Marcelo Montoya will miss six weeks with a neck injury in a fresh blow to Canterbury's hopes of sealing a top-two finish on the NRL ladder.

NRL 2025: Wests Tigers players accused of using offensive hand gesture
Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. The NRL has confirmed it's been made aware of an offensive Middle Eastern hand gesture allegedly used by several Wests Tigers players during their win over the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon. Emotions were running high in Lachlan Galvin's first match against his former side, with the Tigers producing a gigantic upset in the wet to put a dent in Canterbury's top-two hopes. But the win has been soured after Samuela Fainu and Brent Naden taunted Bulldogs fans with 'the Khod' following Fainu's match-sealing try.

Two more years: Wests Tigers revise offer for Adam Doueihi
Wests Tigers have ramped up negotiations with Adam Doueihi by stretching their offer to a second year. Doueihi was a standout for the Tigers during Sunday's 28-14 upset over the Bulldogs, and will no doubt use the bye round to weigh up whether he accepts the club's revised deal, or entertains a move to St George Illawarra. The Dragons have already met with Doueihi who view him as an ideal No. 13 for Parramatta-bound Jack de Belin. The Tigers' initially tabled a one-year extension worth around $350,000 a season, and now added the 2027 season at the same money. Tigers CEO Shane Richardson said on Monday: 'We've offered Adam a two-year deal, and it's our final offer. If he doesn't accept it, we'll have to move on. We haven't put a timeline on it. We'll see what happens.' Jarome Luai and Latu Fainu are viewed as the long-term halves at the Tigers, with Doueihi a ball-playing lock forward. Coach Benji Marshall shifted Doueihi to halfback against the Dogs before kick-off, and said his experience was what the club needed in what was always going to be an emotive game. Marshall admitted at his post-match press conference how it important it was the club kept Doueihi, and said: 'We've been talking quite often with Adam, and we've made him an offer to stay.'

Just another week? Winning the Galvin Cup was the Tigers' grand final
Loading Sunday afternoon's spiteful and emotion-charged game between the Bulldogs and Tigers was a reminder of everything enthralling about sport. Tribalism. A genuine disdain for the opposition. And a bunch of players running around pretending it's just another game of football when it was clearly more than just another game of football. Lachlan Galvin was the headline act of a show that had more sub-plots than a season of MobLand. Take Wests Tigers prop Terrell May. He was rejected by the Bulldogs … twice. The first came 18 months ago when Canterbury withdrew a $500,000 contract when he walked out on his agent who was negotiating the deal before May switched to a rival manager. Then again over the off season when the Sydney Roosters' bizarrely decided to let him go. The Bulldogs considered entering the equation yet again but did not think he would fit into what they were building and instead signed Newcastle forward Leo Thompson. This on top of the fact the Bulldogs had previously withdrawn their commitment to signing his brother Tyrone from the Super League after word of his pending arrival made it into the media. Did we also mention they expressed interest in the youngest sibling Taylan, only to decide he wasn't worth pursuing when he was off-contract at the Panthers? Don't tell me the Mays didn't have that stored in the back of the memory bank.
