IND U19 vs ENG U19 Test: As Vaibhav Suryavanshi fails, skipper Ayush Mhatre flourishes with blistering 64-ball century
On a day when opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi was dismissed for a golden duck, India U19 captain Ayush Mhatre produced a magnificent counterattack, scoring a sensational century in the second Youth Test against England U19 at the County Ground in Chelmsford.
Chasing a stiff target of 355 on Day 4, Mhatre led from the front, reaffirming his growing stature as one of India's most promising young batters.
The 18-year-old, who celebrated his birthday just a week earlier on July 16, has enjoyed a remarkable run of form in this series. Having marked his birthday with his teammates at Lord's, Mhatre brought the celebrations to the pitch with a commanding performance.
Opening the innings alongside Suryavanshi, Mhatre wasted no time in asserting himself, scoring freely and setting the tone for India's chase.
He formed a crucial partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu, who also played a valuable role with a composed half-century. Mhatre raced to his century in just 64 balls, showcasing his fearless stroke play and positive intent. His eventual score of 126 came off just 80 deliveries, before he was caught attempting a slog sweep off the fourth ball of the 27th over from England's Albert.
His run tally featured 13 boundaries and 6 sixes.
Mhatre's consistency throughout the series has been a standout. In the first Youth Test at Beckenham, he scored a well-paced 102 off 115 balls in the first innings and followed it up with a brisk 32 in the second. He continued that momentum in the first innings of the Chelmsford Test with a fluent 80 from 90 deliveries.

As India look to gain the upper hand in the series following a drawn first Test, Mhatre's inspirational leadership and red-hot form have provided the perfect foundation in the high-pressure chase.

Caitlin Clark is out due to her groin injury (Image via Instagram / @caitlinclark22) The Indiana Fever seemingly depends on Caitlin Clark 's availability as the 2025 WNBA season progresses. The star player has already missed her 12th consecutive game as her team lost to the Washington Mystics on Friday. It was their 16th loss of the season. Caitlin Clark's absence due to her injury is hurting the Indiana Fever as the postseason race gets closer. Hence, head coach Stephanie White wants to have her back before the regular season ends. Caitlin Clark's absence continues to hurt the Indiana Fever as the playoff race intensifies in the 2025 WNBA season After suffering a right groin injury against the Connecticut Sun on July 15, the 23-year-old has been sidelined ever since. The comeback date of the Indiana Fever's standout point guard is still unknown, one month later. With ten games remaining and without their best player, the team is in seventh place and is just surviving to qualify for the playoffs. Now, everyone is starting to question whether the star player's season is over as the end draws near. Before Saturday's Connecticut Sun vs. Indiana Fever game, head coach Stephanie White refrained from offering a specific response. When asked whether Caitlin Clark would return before the season ends, she said: 'That's the hope. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The New Kitchen Trends For 2024 (Click To See) Kitchen Deals | Search Ads Search Now Undo The hope is that she's back." She further stated in an interview last Monday that Caitlin Clark had made good progress but had not yet begun practicing with the squad. Additionally, after guards Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald sustained season-ending injuries on August 8, the team's injury issue has gotten worse. The Indiana Fever hired veteran guard Odyssey Sims and Kyra Lambert this past week in an attempt to fill the void. Meanwhile, earlier this month, the WNBA star stated that she still lacked a timeline for a possible comeback during an interview on Sue Bird's Bird's Eye View podcast.
