Green Bay Packers sign Winnipeg Blue Bombers draft pick Taylor Elgersma
The NFL's Green Bay Packers signed quarterback Taylor Elgersma to a rookie contract on Monday after he attended their rookie mini-camp.
The Bombers just selected Elgersma in the second round of the draft at 18th overall two weeks ago.
'There were a lot of emotions,' Elgersma told LaurierAthletics.com 'This was a lot of hard work and a long journey to get to this. When I didn't hear my name called on draft night (NFL), of course, there was disappointment. But my path was a little different. I think it speaks volumes to controlling what you can control.'
The 23-year-old is just the fourth quarterback from a Canadian university to sign with an NFL team and the first since the 1980s.

Elgersma led the Laurier Golden Hawks to the Vanier Cup game in his fourth season with the school and won the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2024 as the top player in Canadian university football.

'I have a ton of pride in being a Canadian athlete,' he said. 'And specifically a Canadian football player who played U SPORTS and got to represent football on the other side of the border on the biggest stage in the world.
'It means so much to me to be the fourth U SPORTS quarterback to sign an NFL contract. You see how many great quarterbacks have come before me. They paved the way. To put pen to paper in the NFL is something super surreal.'
In his own words.@LaurierFootball grad Taylor Elgersma reflects on his journey to become just the fourth Canadian university quarterback – and first in 37 years – to sign an @NFL contract and finding a "perfect fit" with the @packers.#SoarAbove · @ElgersmaTaylor pic.twitter.com/fCoIUeUpCE

National Lacrosse League's Albany FireWolves moving to Oshawa
Social Sharing Oshawa will soon be home to a professional lacrosse team as the Albany FireWolves are moving to the city. The FireWolves are relocating ahead of the 2025-2026 season, according to a news release from the National Lacrosse League (NLL) on Tuesday. The team will play its home games at the Tribute Communities Centre in downtown Oshawa. "Oshawa sits within one of the core epicentres of the indoor lacrosse world in Ontario … The energy and passion of the sports' fans in this area make this an ideal home for the franchise and our league," NLL Commissioner Brett Frood said in the news release. The FireWolves will keep their name for the upcoming season, the NLL said. Details about branding and community initiatives will be announced in the coming weeks. They are now the second NLL team based in the Greater Toronto Area, alongside the Toronto Rock. The other Canadian teams in the league are the Calgary Roughnecks, Ottawa Black Bears, Halifax Thunderbirds, Vancouver Warriors and Saskatchewan Rush. Move is 'bittersweet,' Albany FireWolves say The Albany FireWolves thanked their supporters "for [their] passion, loyalty, and dedication" in a statement on Instagram. "There were several challenges, both at the state and local level that made the economics of staying in Albany untenable, which makes this decision bittersweet," the statement read. WATCH | Lacrosse returning to Summer Olympics in 2028 after more than 100 years: Lacrosse more than just a sport for many Indigenous communities 1 year ago The 2028 Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, and that's when lacrosse will return to the playing fields after an absence of more than 100 years. It is Canada's national summer sport, but as Monia Blanchet tells us, for many Indigenous communities, lacrosse represents much more. The team said it is excited to begin a new chapter in Durham Region and share the Tribute Communities Centre with the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals. "We will work tirelessly to earn the respect of the community and to create a team and game-day experience that families, fans, and businesses can rally behind," the statement read. The FireWolves were the runners-up in the 2024 NLL season, falling to the Buffalo Bandits. The franchise relocated to Albany from New England ahead of the 2021-2022 season, according to an archived page from their website. Oshawa has rich lacrosse history Lacrosse was invented by the Haudenosaunee, a confederacy of the Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk), Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora Nations. Oshawa's lacrosse history goes back to neighbourhood leagues in 1872, said Todd Powless, vice-president of recreational lacrosse for the Oshawa Minor Lacrosse Association — also known as the Oshawa Blue Knights. In the 1960s, the Oshawa Green Gaels, a junior lacrosse team, won a record-setting seven consecutive Minto Cup championships — the national junior men's lacrosse championship. "We have that in Oshawa as our legacy," Powless said. The FireWolves' move will mean fans will have a team that is easily accessible, he said. The Toronto Rock currently play in Hamilton, which is a long commute. "It's kind of like winning a lacrosse lottery," he said. Powless said he also hopes the team will inspire more people to play lacrosse across the region. "The main question is, where can we get season tickets?" he said.

The collaboration aims to revolutionize how teams operate both on and off the field, leveraging cutting-edge technologies like Microsoft Copilot and Azure AI to enhance game-day decisions, streamline operations, and improve player evaluation. This content has been prepared as part of a partnership with Microsoft Corp. and is intended for informational purposes only. With 30 stadiums hosting over 330 events annually and hundreds of millions of fans worldwide, the NFL is one of the most watched sports leagues globally. The expanded partnership will embed Microsoft's AI-powered business solutions and cloud platforms into every facet of the league's operations—from sideline strategy to front-office management. A major highlight of the partnership is the upgrade of the NFL's Sideline Viewing System. More than 2,500 Microsoft Surface Copilot+ PCs have been deployed across all 32 clubs, empowering approximately 1,800 players and over 1,000 coaches and staff with real-time data and analysis tools. A new feature built with GitHub Copilot allows users to filter plays by down, distance, scoring, and penalties—enabling faster, more strategic decision-making. With Microsoft's AI technologies, including Copilot, there are tremendous opportunities to elevate the gameday experience for our clubs and deliver an even more compelling product to our fans.' AI beyond the field The partnership is also out to extend AI capabilities beyond the sidelines. A Copilot-powered game day operations dashboard is in development to help game operations managers track and categorize incidents like weather delays and technical issues, improving future decision-making and operational efficiency. Microsoft Azure AI video tools are being integrated into practice sessions to assist with coaching evaluations and injury assessments. During the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, a new Azure AI Foundry-powered app provided coaches and scouts with intelligent, real-time insights on over 300 prospects. Transforming club operations and fan engagement Looking ahead, individual clubs will be able to apply AI across a range of scenarios—from analyzing draft prospects outside the Combine to optimizing business operations in finance, HR, and events. AI agents will support workstreams such as player scouting and salary cap management. Some clubs, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are already using Copilot to enhance marketing and fan engagement. The NFL Players Association is also leveraging Microsoft AI solutions to improve video review processes, working to boost both staff efficiency and player safety. A vision to the future 'Extending our work together is more than just a football story, it's a blueprint for transformation,' Microsoft's corporate vice president, global marketing, Bryson Gordon, added.
