DEI boycott 'played a role' in Target's Q1 sales slump as foot traffic declined
On Wednesday, shares of the retailer slid more than 7% after it posted a 3.8% year-over-year decline in same-store sales, compared to the 3.7% drop it saw last year.
CEO Brian Cornell said during the earnings call that one headwind Target faced in the quarter was consumer reaction to "updates" it shared on belonging in January.
Those reactions, Cornell said, compounded ongoing pressure on consumers' discretionary spending amid five months of declining consumer confidence and uncertainty about tariffs.
"While we believe each of these factors played a role in our first quarter performance, we can't reliably estimate the impact of each one separately," Cornell said.
The retailer announced in January it would scale back its "Belonging at the Bullseye" strategy that focused on hiring and supplier diversity goals. The changes also ended Target's participation in external diversity-focused surveys, including the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index.
Target was mentioned as a specific focal point for advocacy group Black Wall Street Ticker, which in February called for a 40-day "corporate fast" from spending any money at the chain between March 5 and April 17.
Target is one of dozens of companies that announced recent about-faces on diversity, a list that also includes Walmart (WMT), Google (GOOG), Meta (META), McDonald's (MCD), Amazon (AMZN), and Tractor Supply (TSCO).
For the week of March 3, Walmart's foot traffic was down 0.7% year over year, while Target's foot traffic was down 6.8%, according to Placer.ai. They haven't seen a full recovery so far this year.
Meanwhile, foot traffic at Costco (COST) — which has affirmed its support for DEI policies and was listed by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as part of a "Black Consumer Advisory" initiative — was up 7% year over year in the week of March 3.
Walmart has faced some repudiation, including from its own investors. More than 30 shareholders representing $266 billion in assets sent a message earlier this year to CEO Doug McMillon that called the retailer's recent DEI policy changes "very disheartening."
Yet, Walmart's US same-store sales jumped 4.5% year over year in its latest quarter, besting estimates of 3.85%. Roth Capital Partners senior research analyst Bill Kirk told Yahoo Finance that this is a larger narrative as Walmart outpaces Target's growth rate by four times.
Target is "very far behind," he said, as the company struggles to figure out "what makes them unique in this current environment."
"Consumers aren't compelled to use Target in the same way they once were ... If you're not compelled to use Target for a particular reason, it makes a boycott far simpler to execute," he said.
The backlash could persist. CFRA analyst Arun Sundaram told Yahoo Finance, "I don't think Target gave much assurance that the DEI-related boycotts were limited to this quarter."
Sundaram noted that, unlike the backlash to Target's Pride merchandise in 2023, this time "management couldn't quantify the impact." Back then, Target "provided monthly sales cadence and reassured investors that the issue was mostly contained to that quarter."
Meanwhile, Morningstar analyst Noah Rohr said the company is facing "several headwinds," making it "difficult to parse out" a direct factor.
"Tough competition and a weak spending environment," he said, are "two factors likely to persist in coming quarters."

Walmart raises guidance despite EPS miss, tariffs weighing
Walmart still managed to sprint past nearly everyone else despite profits falling this quarter and a rare miss on earnings-per-share, snapping a 12-quarter winning streak. But revenue rose, guidance climbed, and the retail giant once again reminded Wall Street that it's better at surviving storms than celebrating streaks. Adjusted earnings came in at 68 cents, short of the 73 cents analysts expected, sending the stock down about 3% in premarket trading. But revenue jumped nearly 5% to $177.4 billion, U.S. comparable sales rose 4.6%, and Walmart raised its full-year forecast for both sales and profit. The picture was less a stumble than a reminder of what makes the company hard to knock over: When profit is pressured by tariffs, labor costs, or insurance claims, Walmart has multiple levers to pull — and it's not shy about using them. CEO Doug McMillon acknowledged that tariffs are steadily increasing costs and that the cumulative effect of higher costs is beginning to impact shopping patterns. He said, 'As we replenish inventory at post-tariff price levels, we've continued to see our costs increase each week, which we expect will continue into the third and fourth quarters.' But if tariffs were the headwind, Walmart's answer was the same tailwind it has relied on for decades: everyday low prices. 'With regard to our U.S. pricing decisions, given tariff-related cost pressures, we're doing what we said we would do,' McMillon told investors. 'We're keeping our prices as low as we can for as long as we can.' This quarter, his answer — and the company's — was to lean into the brand's oldest promise: low prices. In practice, that meant 7,400 'Rollback' discounts during the quarter, a not-so-subtle reminder to shoppers that Walmart intends to be the last place inflation shows up. 'Shoppers for the past few years have spent somewhat cautiously, leaning toward needs over wants, but tariff-related price increases have caused middle- and low-income shoppers to rein in their spending even more,' McMillon told analysts. The pattern is clear: smaller baskets, sharper focus on value, and a consumer leaning harder into Walmart's core strengths. Most retailers would see that as a warning flare. Walmart is treating it as a competitive weapon. Its scale allows it to swallow some of the added costs and still plaster those 'Rollback' tags across aisles, daring rivals to keep up. Groceries, memberships, and ads buffer margins, letting Walmart absorb blows others can't. Ahead of the earnings report, Jefferies' Corey Tarlowe described those share gains as 'durable momentum,' pointing out that tariffs may nick profits but also accelerate the company's ability to pull traffic away from mid-tier competitors. But those rollbacks weren't a magic trick. Groceries and health products carried the quarter, providing steady traffic while more discretionary categories lagged. Membership income climbed more than 5%, helping pad recurring revenue. E-commerce surged 26% in the U.S. and 25% globally, with store-fulfilled delivery now accounting for nearly half of the company's growth. Advertising revenue — the kind of high-margin side hustle that most retailers dream about — jumped 46% worldwide. Chief financial officer John Rainey described the quarter as one of quiet share gains. 'We have seen growth across all income cohorts in the quarter,' he said, stressing that inventory levels remain healthy enough to keep the company nimble in a shifting economy. Analysts largely sided with management's framing. JPMorgan said the report doesn't fundamentally change its positive outlook on the stock. Wall Street wants to know how long Walmart can keep absorbing costs before it feels the pinch, yet the stock largely remains rated a 'Buy.' With analysts calling out its pricing power, Walmart has turned tariffs into both a moat and a marketing message; higher costs may be a storm, but it's one the company seems built to weather better than anyone else. The quarter may have ended Walmart's EPS streak, but it didn't change the story. The contrast with rivals only sharpens that point. Target, once seen as Walmart's trendier twin, has been struggling with slower foot traffic and tariff exposure in apparel and home goods. Home Depot and Lowe's are contending with stalled home-improvement spending . Even Costco, whose membership model is its shield, has seen sales growth flatten as households stretch their budgets. What ties the sector together is a pivot to more resilient revenue streams: loyalty programs, advertising, and delivery services. But where others are experimenting, Walmart is scaling. With more than 90% of U.S. households shopping at its stores each year, the company has a platform that can turn side bets into profit engines. Its ad business now looks less like a pilot project and more like a media arm. Its e-commerce growth suggests it's no longer just chasing Amazon but carving out a different model, with stores doubling as fulfillment hubs and groceries anchoring digital loyalty. That's why the market's fixation on the earnings miss may seem out of step with the substance of the quarter. Profits slipped. But sales rose, forecasts climbed, customers kept coming, and Walmart kept widening the gap with peers. For most retailers, a 3% dip in premarket trading would sting. For Walmart, it was almost comic relief — a reminder that even when it trips, it keeps outpacing the field. Walmart reports solid gains in Q2 as more U.S. shoppers look for deals
Walmart Inc. reported increases in second-quarter profits and sales Thursday as it pulls in shoppers seeking low prices for groceries and other essentials to offset worries that new U.S. tariffs may make a variety of goods more expensive. The nation's largest retailer also increased its annual profit and sales outlook. Quarterly results from Walmart and other major U.S. retailers this week offer clues on how consumers are reacting to the possibility of tariff-related price increases. The company, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, said it earned $7.03 billion, or 88 cents per share, for the three-month period that ended ended July 31. That compares with $4.50 billion, or 56 cents per share, a year ago. Sales rose nearly 5% to $177.4 billion. A growing list of companies, including Procter & Gamble, Cosmetics, Black & Decker and Ralph Lauren, told investors in recent weeks that they planned to or already had raised prices because of tariffs, though modestly. None of that has derailed consumer spending. Shoppers spent at a healthy pace in July, particularly at the nation's auto dealerships, as signs emerged that President Donald Trump's trade policies were taking a toll on jobs. Some of that spending may have been shoppers buying furniture and other imported items to get ahead of expected price increases, analysts said. On Tuesday, Home Depot, the nation's largest home improvement retailer, reported improved sales during its latest quarter as consumers remained focused on smaller projects. Like Walmart, Home Depot's performance missed Wall Street's expectations. The Atlanta-based company also said shoppers should expect modest price increases in some categories as a result of additional costs from tariffs, which are taxes on imports. Target, which has been struggling to reverse a persistent sales malaise, reported another quarterly decline in comparable sales and said Wednesday that it would only raise prices as a last resort. The Minneapolis-based company said Wednesday that CEO Brian Cornell, who helped reenergize the chain but has struggled to turn around weak sales in a more competitive retail landscape since the COVID-19 pandemic, plans to step down Feb. 1. Target's Chief Operating Officer Michael Fiddelke, a 20-year company veteran, will succeed Cornell. Cornell will transition to be executive chair of the board. The discounter's Chief Commercial Officer Rick Gomez said shoppers are looking for value and so the company would focus more on its store label brands, which tend to be less expensive than national labels. But it's Walmart that serves as a barometer of spending given its outsized power in American retailing. The company maintains that 90% of U.S. households rely on Walmart for a range of products, and more than 150 million customers shop on its website or in its stores every week. Walmart said in May that prices had started to increase in late April and got higher in May. But it said Thursday that it had introduced 7,400 price rollbacks, or temporary discounts, across the aisles in the latest quarter. Walmart's U.S. comparable sales — those from established physical stores and online channels — rose 4.6% in the quarter, slightly higher than the 4.5% gain in the fiscal first quarter. Groceries and health and wellness items fueled the growth, the company said., the company said. Global e-commerce sales rose 25%, above the 22% growth in the fiscal first quarter. Despite Walmart's solid quarter, its stock price was down more than 2% early Thursday as its earnings per share came in below what analysts had expected. Analysts were expecting 73 cents per share on sales of $175.93 billion for the quarter, according to FactSet. Per share results, excluding effects of charges related to certain legal matters and from business restructuring, was 68 cents, Walmart said. The company said Thursday it expects earnings per share to be in the range of 58 cents to 60 cents for the current quarter. Analysts expect 57 cents per share, according to FactSet. For the year, Walmart raised its per-share estimates to a range of $2.52 to $2.62, up from a previous estimate of a $2.50 to $2.60 range. It said 2025 sales are anticipated to increase 3.75% to 4.75%, more than it projected in May.
