‘Time to unite in the interest of Marathi, Maharashtra': Sena (UBT) amid talks of rapproachement between Thackeray cousins
Amid initial hints of rapproachment between estranged cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, Uddhav-led Shiv Sena (UBT) on Saturday said that it was 'time to unite in the interest of Mumbai and Maharashtra' and that the party workers were 'ready to safeguard the Marathi pride'.
The party made the statement in a social media post on X.
The post, written in Marathi, read: 'Time has come to unite for Mumbai and Maharashtra. Shivsainiks are ready to protect Marathi asmita ( pride)'
The Sena UBT's post has come days ahead of the Maharashtra Day, which is observed on May 1.
The statement comes amid talks of possible alliance between Uddhav-led Sena and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) ahead of the local body elections later this year.
Highly placed sources in Shiv Sena ( UBT) said, 'The post has given a clear message. It is to mobilise the cadre. It also hints the party and its leaders hold pride and welfare of Marathi and Maharashtra above everything else.'
The source, however, added, 'Decisions related to alliance between Sena ( UBT) and MNS will only be finalised by Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray.'
A section within Uddhav Sena termed the post as 'an appeal for everyone to unite for the state's welfare'.
An MNS leader, on condition of anonymity, said, 'If Uddhav is taking a step forward, it is good. It will be reciprocated by us.'
The leader, however, cautioned that alliance is a serious matter and it will have to go through marathon discussions and will not happen through social media posts.
Both Uddhav and Raj are holidaying with their respective families outside India. As per sources in the both the parties, Raj is likely to return to Mumbai on April 29, whereas Uddhav is expected to return on May 4.
Last week, in an interview to filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar, the MNS chief had said, 'Our coming together is not difficult. The differences are detrimental for the welfare of Maharashtra and Marathi people.'
He also underlined that while the disputes between Uddhav and him were minor, 'Maharashtra was much bigger than all that.'
Soon afterwards, Uddhav responded during his address to party workers in Mumbai. 'I am willing to come together in the interest of Maharashtra. I am ready to set aside minor issues. I never had differences. Yet, I have put aside all disputes.'
The statements by the Thackeray cousins evoked reactions from leaders of various parties.
State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule had said, 'It was a matter between two parties and their leaders. If they come together, it is good.'
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had also echoed similar sentiments. 'It is good if they are setting their differences aside and coming together,' he said.
NCP ( SP) Supriya Sule, who personally called both brothers, termed it a 'golden moment'.
'I'm overwhelmed hearing this news about reunion of Uddhav-Raj,' she had said.
However, Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, when asked about the possible reunion, told mediapersons, 'Let's talk about work.'

Shortage of funds leaves Vij's 460 cr SWD project in limbo
1 2 Vijayawada: One year after the storm water drainage (SWD) project works resumed in Vijayawada, the civic body has so far completed the construction of storm water drain canals along a mere 3.42-kilometre stretch at a cost of 4.35 crore, out of the total 48.47 kilometres planned in the city. After the change of guard in the state, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) took up the construction of the storm water drain canals (minor canals) under the SWD project in June 2024. The SWD project, worth nearly 460 crore in central funds, was launched in Vijayawada in 2016 to create robust storm water drain canals during the previous govt. However, due to lack of payment to the contracting agency, the project has almost been stalled. The civic body has now readied proposals to construct minor drain canals spanning around 48.47 kilometres. In 2016, the SWD project works were awarded to L&T firm during the previous TDP-led NDA govt; however, L&T abandoned the project reportedly due to delays in the release of bills during the previous govt. However, the municipal administration and urban development (MAUD) department, under minister P Narayana, laid special emphasis on completing the stalled storm water drain works. Against this backdrop, the civic body readied plans to take up the construction works on a total stretch of 47.27 kilometres, filling leftover gaps primarily focusing on major junctions besides constructing minor drains across 64 wards in three circles in the city. It is learnt that the dearth of funds is the main reason behind the slow execution of works. According to the civic body authorities, the municipal corporation requires about 173.05 crore to complete the storm water drain canals remaining on the 47.27-kilometre stretch, which were grounded last year. CPM state secretariat member Ch Babu Rao squarely blamed the state govt and municipal corporation for failing to effectively utilise the central funds sanctioned for the SWD project in 2016 for the city. "While the SWD works were executed in an unplanned manner, leaving gaps along the constructed stretches without proper outlets for the outfall drains, even at places where storm water drain canal construction was completed, it has been creating a chaotic situation during rains in the city," he observed. A senior VMC official told TOI that the civic body would hire a private contracting agency to identify and assess the total pending works pertaining to the SWD project 2016 and funds required to complete those works. "After the agency subimits a report to the civic body regarding the total extent of storm water drain canals remaining under the SWD project and the total outlay required to complete; the civic body would submit a report to the state government to seek the requisite funds," the VMC added. As per the preliminary estimiates of the civic body, a whopping 500 crore would be required to complete the remaining construction of the storm water drain canals in the city.

Ordinance on school fees favours private schools, claims AAP
New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday alleged that BJP-led Delhi govt's ordinance on regulating fee hikes favours private schools and decried it as an attempt to "fool" parents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now There was no immediate reaction from the ruling BJP to the allegations. On Tuesday, Delhi Cabinet approved an ordinance empowering the govt to impose fines up to Rs 10 lakh on private schools for violating fee norms and even revoke their right to propose fee revisions. Education minister Ashish Sood said the cabinet, chaired by chief minister Rekha Gupta, approved the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Ordinance, 2025, which will be sent for presidential assent through the lieutenant governor. AAP Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that in order to favour private schools, govt brought the ordinance through the backdoor. Calling it an "open" and "blatant" surrender of governance, he said the law is drafted entirely in favour of school management. "Ever since the BJP formed a govt in Delhi, the first session of private schools began with a wave of fee hikes. Parents were left with no choice but to pay," he said. Previously, schools had to seek approval from the Directorate of Education before raising fees. Bharadwaj said, "From April 1, private schools increased fees arbitrarily without approval, and the govt took no action—no rollback or refunds were ordered." Criticising the govt for bypassing public consultation and not bringing the bill before the legislative assembly, he said, "The draft was not made public, was not uploaded online, and no citizen feedback was sought." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Bharadwaj explained the ordinance hands fee-fixing power to school-level committees, whose decisions will be final without govt oversight. These committees include five school members—three teachers, one principal, and one management member—and parents chosen by lottery. He warned the lottery might select uninterested or uninformed parents, giving schools a voting majority.

A tale of two NCPs and Senas
Nagpur: For the first time in Nagpur's civic polls, two factions of Shiv Sena and NCP will be vying to establish their base. While both parties had maintained a strong presence at the state level, they were unable to meet expectations in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections even before the split. Now, with cadres and voter bases divided between rival factions, political experts expect the battle for political traction in the NMC polls to become even more intense. However, leaders of both Shiv Sena and NCP factions claim to have an edge over their rivals. "People have taken notice of the work we have done at the ground level. In North Nagpur, we facilitated 3,000 new water connections, which the people have appreciated. In Rambagh, an issue related to the gutter line had been pending for 50 years, and we ensured that the project was completed," said NCP ( Ajit Pawar faction) leader Prashant Pawar, expressing confidence about his party's performance in the upcoming local polls. NCP (SP) leader Duneshwar Pethe also expressed optimism about gaining ground in the NMC elections. "It has been just over a year since the NCP split. Before that, all the work was done under the leadership of Sharad Pawar. Is it not shameful that the water problem still exists in Nagpur despite the ruling coalition being in power in the civic body for the last 15 years and over a decade at the state level? People have told us they are fed up with the Mahayuti and want change," he said. Pethe also outlined the party's development plans for the city. "We will address issues related to school fees and garbage collection. English medium schools will be started under NMC to ensure free education for children. We also need to properly plan hawkers' zones to improve traffic management. Merely building flyovers doesn't enhance the city's beauty," he added. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Nitin Tiwari said people will place their trust in the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction. "Sena UBT has been at the forefront, fighting for Nagpurians' rights. We have staged multiple agitations, exposed corruption by contractors in civic affairs, and questioned the deterioration of the city's infrastructure. Our party will transform city governance by providing transparent and efficient administration," he told TOI. His party colleague Kishore Kumeriya said, "The real DNA of Shiv Sainiks is rooted in the teachings of Balasaheb Thackeray, and that spirit resides in UBT. Sena UBT is filled with grassroots-level workers. Moreover, people have witnessed the commendable work done by Uddhav Thackeray during his tenure as CM." On the other hand, Shiv Sena ( Eknath Shinde faction) leader Mangesh Kashikar claimed his party is poised for significant gains. "Our strength is growing, and prominent faces from Sena (UBT) and other parties have joined us. In the coming week, more big names will join. Statistically, we had only two seats in NMC earlier, so there is little to lose. Our internal assessments suggest that we will win 12 seats this time," he said.
