Massive rise in number of fines issued to Bolton fly-tippers

Yahoo06-05-2025
Fines issued to fly-tippers in the borough have increased by a staggering amount over the last year.
A request made under the Freedom of Information Act has revealed the total number – and value – of fines issued over the last five years.
The number of people fined for fly-tipping between 2020 and 2024 was 188 – with 136 being last year alone.
This means 72 per cent of people fined in the last five years were fined in 2024.
The total value of the fines issued between 2020 and 2024 was £40,700 – with £32,150 coming from just 2024.
This was 79 per cent of the cash from the last five years coming from last year alone.
Cllr Richard Silvester, the council's executive cabinet member for climate change and the environment, said Labour has encouraged reporting incidents since taking control of the council in May 2023.
He said: 'We have encouraged the public to report fly-tipping incidents and because of this, the amount of fly-tipping reports received have increased.
'We do need to know where fly-tipping is occurring so that our enforcement officers can investigate for evidence and issue a fine and so that our teams can then attend to clear.'

Cllr Silvester said that the new Labour government has been seeking extra investment to tackle the problem.
This included an extra £300,000 for street cleaning and fly-tipping removal given to the council in their February budget.
He said: 'It is our mission to clean up the borough and to clear up the mess and lack of investment which the previous Conservative administration left us with and that is what we have been doing, staying true to our local manifesto commitments.'

Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently announced in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the government would be cracking down on fly-tippers with new technology.
He said: 'This is a message to the fly-tippers blighting our towns and villages- for too long, your actions have gone unpunished.
'That ends now. We'll use drones and new tech to identify your vehicle, then we'll crush it.'

Humza Yousaf : Tories 'deliberately trying to fuel hatred against asylum seekers'

Humza Yousaf has accused the Tories of 'deliberately trying to fuel hatred' against asylum seekers by presenting them as a threat to women and children. The former First Minister said politicians like Robert Jenrick were 'reviving the old colonial lie that people from the east are somehow dangerous savages'. Mr Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, has said he supports 'every peaceful protest outside an asylum hotel' and later attended one in Epping, where an asylum seeker was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. Demonstrations against asylum seekers staying in hotels have sprung up across the UK, including in Scotland, with those attending claiming they are making their communities less safe. Mr Jenrick, who previously ran for the Tory leadership, said small boat crossings in the English Channel amounted to a 'national security emergency', adding: 'The truth is that mass, uncontrolled immigration has been fuelling crime and made women and girls less safe. ' In a video posted to social media, Mr Yousaf hit back at the Tory claims, saying it was 'predatory men' who posed a danger to women, rather than people from any one group, such as asylum seekers. READ MORE: 'I want grown up politics': ex-Labour Fife councillor defects to Reform Sturgeon: Gender reform opposition 'hijacked' by supporters of Trump and Erdoğan Mark Smith: The Scots who love Badenoch and Jenrick He said: 'As a father of three girls, let me tell you that it's not asylum seekers I'm worried about when it comes to my daughter's safety – it's men, predatory men, who come in every colour, every religion, are from every background. 'Of course, those who do commit heinous crimes against women, be they asylum seekers or those who have lived in the UK for 10 generations, they should and must feel the full force of the law. 'But when you purposely single out asylum seekers, as the Tories are doing, you're not interested in protecting women, you're deliberately trying to fuel hatred. 'You're reviving the old colonial lie that people from the east are somehow dangerous savages.' The former SNP leader said such rhetoric has turned 'fear into mobs who are ready to set fire to hotels housing asylum seekers', in reference to a riot in Rotherham last year in which a man who attempted to set fire to an asylum hotel. 'It leads to bricks through windows,' he added. 'It leads to fire bombs aimed at vulnerable families who've already fled war and persecution. 'And here's the truth, violence against women is committed by men from every walk of life. 'Blaming asylum seekers doesn't make women safer, it just makes society more divided, more suspicious, more willing to turn on the most vulnerable. 'What the Tories are doing isn't about women's safety, it's about stoking fear. It's the oldest populist trick in the book, let's make sure we don't fall.' A spokesperson for the Scottish Tories said: 'We don't watch Humza Yousaf's videos.'

Roy Wood Jr. Predicts Stephen Colbert Will Become Leading Anti-Trump Voice On YouTube Next Year

'God bless whatever Stephen Colbert does next year with no network person to give him notes.' That was the verdict of Roy Wood Jr., the host of CNN's Have I Got News For You, when considering how the soon-to-depart CBS late night presenter could use platforms like YouTube to make his anti-Trump voice heard extremely loudly soon. More from Deadline Trump White House Joins TikTok As Ban Deadline Looms; "I Am Your Voice," POTUS Tells Followers Paramount UK Chief Ben Frow Says Channel 5 Won't Be Sold After Skydance Merger Shonda Rhimes On Paramount & Disney Bowing To Trump: "It Feels There's Self-Censoring Going On" 'When he's running rampant on YouTube like Don Lemon that will create a bigger issue for this administration in 2026 if he builds an audience,' added Wood Jr. 'It will be a very different landscape if he continues to run off [after leaving CBS]. If [the Trump administration] were smart they would leave us alone and let us tell our jokes.' Wood Jr. was speaking in the wake of Colbert's show being canceled, with the presenter set to exit next May. Paramount has reiterated repeatedly that the move is a financial one but many consider it to be influenced by Trump, and the POTUS has loudly celebrated the decision. This has all taken place as the Paramount-Skydance merger has gone through and after Paramount settled with Trump over a questionable lawsuit targeting 60 Minutes. Wood Jr. said CNN is holding firm amid Trump's push against the media. One of the ways in which it is doing this, he added, is by having Conservative voices speak on the network. NBC, meanwhile, invited Fox Conservative commentator Greg Gutfeld onto the Jimmy Fallon show recently. 'This would be like if Piers Morgan went on Graham Norton,' joked Wood Jr., flagging a British example to the audience at Edinburgh. In this way, Wood Jr. said traditional networks can try and regain some audience trust in the mainstream media, Sadly, however, he went on to discuss how American journalists are not willing to sacrifice their jobs in order to make a political point. 'I don't know if there are enough American journalists who care enough about the totality of our society to sacrifice their career,' he added. 'Because then the question becomes, 'How many journalists can you fire until you find a compliant one?'.' Wood Jr. was speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival on the same day as the likes of Shonda Rhimes and MacTaggart lecturer James Harding. Fox News host gets caught in head-scratching ‘double standard' against Trump nemesis

Fox News anchor Dana Perino is being called out for her latest criticism of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). Newsom's press office has been met with ire from critics in recent weeks as it has hopped on the offensive against President Donald Trump and MAGA, using insults, all-caps and memes to troll on X. Many of the posts are reminiscent of the president's messages on his Truth Social platform, with the account using Trump's popular sign off, 'Thank you for your attention to this matter!' While speaking on 'The Five,' Perino on Monday instructed Newsom to 'stop it with the Twitter thing.' 'I don't know where his wife is,' Perino said. 'If I were his wife, I would say, 'You are making a fool of yourself. Stop it.' Do not let your staff tweet, and if you're doing it yourself, put your phone away and start over.' Perino acknowledged that Newsom has a 'big job' as governor, but then pivoted: 'If he wants an even bigger job, he has to be a little more serious.' Social media users were quick to pounce on her point — with many pointing to how she seemingly forgot about Trump's own online communication style. 'This is so funny,' Bravo's Andy Cohen wrote on X. One user said: 'But she won't say the same about Trump? It seems like Gov. Newsom is hitting them exactly where it bugs them most.' 'This double standard is not just about social media etiquette it's a reflection of a broader political narrative where Trump's actions are normalized, while others are held to an impossible standard,' another user posted, adding 'The message is clear: for Trump, the rules don't apply, but for everyone else, they must be stringent and unforgiving.' Tom Nichols, a staff writer at The Atlantic, posted that Perino was 'soooo close to getting it.' The 'Republicans against Trump' account asked, 'Does somebody want to remind her who the current president is?' 'Congratulations to everyone past present and future who is falling into the most obvious trap in human history,' Aaron Fritschner, the deputy chief of staff for Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.), responded. While Newsom's social media team has poked fun at Trump officials and conservative media hosts and influencers, the account has specifically taken aim at the brewing California and Texas redistricting fight. Newsom announced last Thursday that he will move forward with a plan to combat a Republican-led effort in the Lone Star State to add up to five safe seats ahead of the 2026 midterms. He introduced his proposal, dubbed the 'Election Rigging Response Act,' which would allow his state to sidestep its independent redistricting commission that has created district maps since 2010 if the Texas Legislature successfully passes a plan. In the days leading up to his decision, Newsom issued a series of warnings to Trump, who has backed the GOP's attempt, to stand down. 'DONALD 'TACO' TRUMP, AS MANY CALL HIM, 'MISSED' THE DEADLINE!!! CALIFORNIA WILL NOW DRAW NEW, MORE 'BEAUTIFUL MAPS,' THEY WILL BE HISTORIC AS THEY WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY (DEMS TAKE BACK THE HOUSE!),' the account wrote last week. Newsom, who is seen as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential election, has also responded directly to social media users who have criticized his posts, as he continues to sarcastically capitalize on Trump's unnecessary use of punctuation and capitalization. 'Time for a weather alert,' the account wrote on Monday, adding a barrage of snowflake emojis. Our journalism needs your support. Please subscribe today to
