Guernsey FC set for emotional Footes Lane send-off

BBC News14-03-2025
Players and officials said they had mixed emotions ahead of Guernsey FC's last match at Footes Lane. The Isthmian league South Central side will take on Ascot United on Saturday before moving to Victoria Park for their next home match against Westfield on 29 March. The Green Lions have been based at Footes Lane since the club formed in 2011, sharing the ground with the Guernsey Raiders rugby club and Guernsey Athletics Club.Former player Chris Tardif, who was part of the first Guernsey FC team to play at Footes Lane, said leaving the ground would be sad but it was an exciting time for the club as it moves to its new £10m home.
"It's a great opportunity for everyone and a fantastic development for the island and football," Tardif said."It's going to be an amazing time for the club."
The former player said his fondest memories included the FA Vase semi-final against Spennymoor Town in 2013 and winning the Combined Counties Football League Division One title in the 2011-12 season. He added he loved his time at the club and was proud to have played for Guernsey FC at Footes Lane."It just felt like a proper stadium for the first time for a lot of the players," he said."It gave you a huge buzz to be at the new home of Guernsey football at that point and start a brand new adventure."
'Brand new chapter'
Nic Legg, the club's communications and commercial manager, said Saturday was going to be a chance for everyone involved to reflect on what Guernsey FC had achieved since 2011."As that whistle goes and we know that's the final ever men's game done at Footes Lane, there will be some emotion," Mr Legg said."But mostly it will be pride of what we've managed to achieve over the years."Mr Legg added there was a lot of excitement for the move to Victoria Park - which will also be the first permanent home for the Guernsey FA - and it would be a "brand new chapter" for the club. The team head into Saturday's game 19th in the league table and Mr Legg hoped the stadium move could give the side a boost in their battle against relegation. He said: "We need to harness the spirit of Footes Lane over the years and use the last game as a real kind of motivation to make sure we get something out of that game."

Bryson DeChambeau craving podium finish in Indy

August 13 - By Field Level Media As LIV Golf crowns its 2025 individual champion this weekend in Indianapolis, Bryson DeChambeau will be thrilled to hang on to third place. DeChambeau can't catch leader Joaquin Niemann of Chile or closest pursuer Jon Rahm of Spain, who will battle for the individual title at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield, Ind. He can, however, secure his highest year-end finish after placing fourth in 2023 and eighth in 2024. "I put myself in a solid position for the podium," DeChambeau told reporters on Wednesday. "... (I) want to finally get on that podium. That would be awesome to do. I had a chance last week to win and have a chance to win the overall, but it didn't happen. It is what it is. "But this week, I'm focused on my own game, hitting the best shots I can for the team, and hopefully getting on the team podium as well." DeChambeau declined to speculate on whether Niemann or Rahm would be victorious. "The level of competition they bring to LIV is out of control. It makes it almost impossible for some guys," he said. "... What they're doing is great for LIV, it's great for golf, and honestly, I think whoever wins -- I'm not going to say -- but it's going to be an awesome feat and historical year for either one of those individuals." DeChambeau, 31, finished in a tie for 13th on Sunday in Chicago after carding a 3-over 74 in the final round. The two-time U.S. Open winner has 140.74 points this season and is followed in the standings by Dean Burmester of South Africa (117.25) and Talor Gooch (112.70). DeChambeau won the LIV Golf Korea event in May and has six other top-10 finishes this season, including a T2 in Mexico City. His team, Crushers GC, is second in the team standings behind Legion XIII. DeChambeau was asked about playing in the Indianapolis area and other LIV locales that have historically been underserved on the pro golf scene. "There's plenty of markets out there that would like to have LIV Golf because of the economic impact as well as numerous other things, but Indianapolis having an event here showcasing these great stars, this great talent, at an awesome venue, is what's needed for the game of golf and for LIV personally in my opinion," he said. DeChambeau compared it to his experience on the PGA Tour, where "we went back to the same places every single time." "It's kind of cool that we're going into different markets and infiltrating and feeling out different places because they're all starved of it, and it's time for the game to move to places that are starved," he said. "I personally think it's great. I can't wait to see the crowds out here this week, see what they're all about, and honestly hope to give them everything they wanted and more. I think LIV is definitely one of their best strategies to continue to go to these markets that are a little smaller and give them an opportunity to see what us top players in the world look like."

Sam Long the hero as Bromley shock Ipswich on penalties in Carabao Cup

This remains a new world for Bromley. Recent entrants to the Football League, this home meeting with Ipswich was just their second Carabao Cup contest – now they have their first victory, delivered on penalties against a side who were in the top tier just three months ago. After Ben Johnson cancelled out Deji Elerewe's first-half opener for Bromley, the night went to penalties and belonged to Sam Long. He saved Ipswich's first penalty, low to his right off George Hirst, and was required for another, denying Ali Al-Hamadi. Marcus Ifill provided the final blow, a memorable moment for a club not short of them in recent years. This meeting brought together two managers who are 15 years and two divisions apart but with similar stories to tell. Kieran McKenna and Andy Woodman joined their respective clubs in 2021, leaving behind the luxury of the Premier League; McKenna departed Manchester United's staff, Woodman was head of goalkeeping at Arsenal. Both have packed plenty of history into the past four years, McKenna most notably with back-to-back promotions; Woodman with his side's ascension into the Football League last year, a first for a club founded in 1892. The 3G pitch at Hayes Lane was subsequently ripped out and replaced by grass to fulfil Football League requirements, symbolic for a club wanting more. Bromley finished last season four points off the League Two playoffs and reached the third round of the FA Cup for the first time, even taking the lead at St James' Park before Newcastle – where Woodman was once coach, too – won 3-1. Ipswich, days on from an intense Championship opener with Birmingham, were entering a tie laced with potential embarrassment. Bromley's special occasion was not to get in the way of rotation, both sides much-changed from their last outings. Michael Cheek, the leading goal scorer in League Two last season, was left on the home bench. McKenna handed a first Ipswich start to Ashley Young, older than his manager but still up for a trek down the right. He eased through the first half as Ipswich dominated possession but failed to create. Jack Clarke was lively when cutting in from the left; the overlapping Leif Davis enjoyed the space created and launched his cut backs. But they could not get past the Bromley centre-half Omar Sowunmi, towering over Ali al-Hamadi and in control at the back. Fittingly, Sowunmi was key at the other end, too. Leaping high from a corner just before half-time, he headed into the middle for Elerewe, who glanced in to prompt the roar. There was more joy for Bromley's supporters after the break as Cheek came on under lights, ready to hassle up top. But Ipswich went level through a half-time change of their own. Chiedozie Ogbene thundered down the right-wing before Conor Chaplin seized on the cross, his close-range volley tipped brilliantly on to the crossbar by Sam Long. Unfortunately for the Bromley keeper, Ben Johnson's arrival into the box was perfectly timed, the rebound calmly slotted in. Bromley came close when Marcus Dinanga was denied inside the area by Christian Walton, the keeper making himself big as the game turned more frenetic around the hour-mark. Johnson nearly had a second when he shifted on to his left foot from the edge of the box, the pile-driver tipped over, while Dinanga was denied by a fine Finley Barbrook block. It had to be penalties.
