Guernsey FC set for emotional Footes Lane send-off
Players and officials said they had mixed emotions ahead of Guernsey FC's last match at Footes Lane.The Isthmian league South Central side will take on Ascot United on Saturday before moving to Victoria Park for their next home match against Westfield on 29 March.The Green Lions have been based at Footes Lane since the club formed in 2011, sharing the ground with the Guernsey Raiders rugby club and Guernsey Athletics Club.Former player Chris Tardif, who was part of the first Guernsey FC team to play at Footes Lane, said leaving the ground would be sad but it was an exciting time for the club as it moves to its new £10m home.
"It's a great opportunity for everyone and a fantastic development for the island and football," Tardif said."It's going to be an amazing time for the club."
The former player said his fondest memories included the FA Vase semi-final against Spennymoor Town in 2013 and winning the Combined Counties Football League Division One title in the 2011-12 season.He added he loved his time at the club and was proud to have played for Guernsey FC at Footes Lane."It just felt like a proper stadium for the first time for a lot of the players," he said."It gave you a huge buzz to be at the new home of Guernsey football at that point and start a brand new adventure."
'Brand new chapter'
Nic Legg, the club's communications and commercial manager, said Saturday was going to be a chance for everyone involved to reflect on what Guernsey FC had achieved since 2011."As that whistle goes and we know that's the final ever men's game done at Footes Lane, there will be some emotion," Mr Legg said."But mostly it will be pride of what we've managed to achieve over the years."Mr Legg added there was a lot of excitement for the move to Victoria Park - which will also be the first permanent home for the Guernsey FA - and it would be a "brand new chapter" for the club.The team head into Saturday's game 19th in the league table and Mr Legg hoped the stadium move could give the side a boost in their battle against relegation.He said: "We need to harness the spirit of Footes Lane over the years and use the last game as a real kind of motivation to make sure we get something out of that game."

Strathendrick coach Eddie Roche says he's loving life in the hotseat as he prepares to take the Fintry club into a new division next time round. The Kiwi enjoyed a perfect first year in the job as his side enjoyed an unbeaten campaign to romp to glory in the West Region League Division Two, racking up more than 1000 points across a stop-start season. Now as Roche gives her players some much-needed time off before an assault on the Division One crown, he's spoken to the Observer about his journey from Stateside to the idyllic Stirlingshire countryside ... and the power of the community's togetherness on the pitch. He said: 'I was in Boston but my wife is from Fintry originally and we were looking to move back and did so in late 2023. 'Marcus Holden - who plays for Stirling County - is a mate of mine and he knew some people at the club and that they were looking to have someone come in so I took the opportunity. 'I've played and coached all over the world, but what has struck me about this club is how deep seated the connection is with the community around them. The majority of the players on the pitch are coming through the youth system and a lot of them have been since they were teenagers. 'Inner city clubs, in my experience, don't know the same number of 'one-club men' and that was the most compelling thing - in a small community like this, the rugby club is at the heart of things and getting those connections is really fantastic.' 'Endrick ended up romping away with the crown last season, beating nearest rivals Carrick by 14 points in a perfect season where they ended up with a whopping +905 points difference. After a gruelling campaign, Roche acknowledged the need for rest - but the players will soon be back in for pre-season training in July before their Division One season starts off with a home fixture against Annan before a trip to East Kilbride. Roche added: 'It's a tricky one because the season was so long, we played eight or nine games on the spin through August to October, then winter we played one game before squeezing the matches in all the way up to early May. 'The regional level guys need that time off, so we've given them a rest and then pre-season starts in the second week of July which gives us a good six or seven weeks before the season start. 'We're excited about the opportunity of the new league - we felt we had become a victim of our own success a little last season because some clubs weren't putting out their strongest sides against us because they felt it was a foregone conclusion. 'Having competitive matches every week will be good for a young side who want that action; we're confident in the way we play and the quality of players we have in the squad, the depth of which will really be tested.'

Sheff Wed payment delays 'unacceptable'
The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) has said the delay in Sheffield Wednesday players and staff receiving their wages for May is "unacceptable".Payment had been due on 30 May and the club and owner Dejphon Chansiri have both been charged by the English Football League with multiple breaches relating to payment obligations and they have subsequently been placed under a registration is eight days since the Championship club commented on the issue, when they released a statement saying they "seek a resolution regarding outstanding salaries due for the month of May at the earliest possible opportunity"."Continued and ongoing delays to player and staff wages are unacceptable and need to be addressed without further delay," the PFA said in a statement."Ultimately players and staff are like any other group of employees - they should be able to expect their wages to be paid on time and for the terms of their contracts to be met by their employers."When that does not happen it has a significant impact on the professional and personal lives of players, staff, and their families."The uncertainty it causes is made worse when there appears to be a lack of clear communication regarding the reason these issues are occurring and when payments can be expected."This is the second time this year that the club has had a problem with payments, after March wages were paid on 7 Radio Sheffield have requested an interview with Chansiri.
