Ben Hunt responds after Billy Slater's criticism of Broncos as huge NRL feat looms
Brisbane's inconsistent form in 2025 was typified by last week's shock loss to the lowly Eels. And the Broncos will be desperate to get their season back on track and reignite their top-four hopes in Friday night's clash with the lowly Rabbitohs at Suncorp Stadium, where Hunt is set to line up in his milestone 200th NRL game for Brisbane.
The veteran playmaker started the season at five-eighth but Ezra Mam's return from suspension saw him reclaim the No.6 jersey. And after spending two months sidelined with a hamstring injury, Hunt has shifted into the No.9 role but has struggled to replicate the sort of form at hooker that he's shown at Origin level for the Maroons in the past.
Hunt's two games in the No.9 jersey have been underwhelming by his high standards, with the 35-year-old only having three runs against the Eels for 15m and no runs against the Titans. And the veteran admits it's an area he has to improve in order to give the Broncos an added dimension and help sharpen up their attack.
"That's definitely something I've got to bring into my game the next few weeks," Hunt said. "Now I am back and have got a bit of match fitness and am into the swing of things, I have got to contribute a lot more with the ball. That definitely involves me running out of dummy-half.
"The good (hookers) are doing that. They get half a sniff, guys like Blayke Brailey at the moment, and they are off and running. I've got to start doing that." Hunt has shown what he's capable of playing hooker for Queensland and Australia but before this season he'd only started 15 NRL games in the No.9 role.

Billy Slater says Brisbane need to work out their ideal style
So far Brisbane coach Maguire has been unable to get the best out of his veteran playmaker in the role, but Slater says it's a similar situation with several Brisbane stars. The Queensland coach has been quick to defend Reece Walsh amid criticism of the fullback's erratic displays, and says Maguire is yet to settle on a playing style that suits the team.
"I just don't think the Broncos have worked out the balance to their game yet," he said on Nine's Billy Slater Podcast. "You can see they are trying to play a high-percentage style of game and trying to work really hard to get that fluency... I just don't know if it suits all of their players.
"Kotoni Staggs didn't see much ball, he wasn't injected into the game. They need to work out how to extract the best out of their footy team and work to their strengths. Once they find that, they are one of the best teams in the competition. Consistency has been a real issue for them this year and it was an issue even within the game. There's still a bit of work to do, but they've got six weeks to work it out."
Friday night's match against cellar-dwellers South Sydney will be a 'special' occasion for milestone man Hunt, who insists Brisbane still have the team to win the premiership this season, despite last week's speed bump' against the Eels. "If we can play our best footy we can definitely go with any team in the competition," he said. "It is a matter of us turning up and playing our best. We've shown patches of that through the year but we have to be more consistent."

Bulldogs' Hayward switch could be best in 15 years
No NRL premier has made such a big and late tactical change at hooker in 15 seasons but Canterbury players insist Bailey Hayward's promotion to No.9 can help the Bulldogs become even better. With five rounds before finals, Hayward started as an NRL rake for the first time in Canterbury's defeat of the Warriors and retains his spot for Friday's clash with the Sydney Roosters. It's left North Queensland-bound Reed Mahoney, starting dummy-half in a grand final three years ago, consigned to a bench spot as the third-placed Dogs eye a first premiership since 2004. "Respectfully, there probably wasn't a spot for (Hayward) in the 17 at the start of the year and he's just forced his way into the team every week," said Bulldogs prop Max King. "Now he's forced himself inside that 13, in the No.9. It's a credit to himself and how he's going." The footwork from Hayward 🕺 #NRLBulldogsRoosters Telstra Moment of the Match. — NRL (@NRL) May 16, 2025 Hayward's breakout season notwithstanding, it is rare for premiership-winning teams to make such a dramatic shift in the crucial position so late in a campaign. The most recent example of a team tinkering with its starting hooker this late in a premiership run was in 2022, when Penrith's Mitch Kenny began to start ahead of Api Koroisau. But that change was nowhere near as seismic as the Hayward move, with Koroisau always swapped to the bench on game day and still playing the majority of each game at hooker. South Sydney memorably thrust Koroisau into starting hooker when Issac Luke was suspended for the 2014 grand final, while rookie Sam Verrills replaced the injured Jake Friend with seven regular-season games to play in 2019. But it's not since 2010 that a side has made as big a tactical move at hooker this late in the season and gone on to win the premiership. That year, St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett began deploying Dean Young at the expense of dual premiership-winner Luke Priddis, who only started again when stars were rested before finals. Coincidentally, Bennett began the tactical change with five games before finals - the exact same time of the season as Canterbury have begun starting the newly re-signed Hayward. But Hayward's teammates are confident the late change can take the Bulldogs to new heights. "Bailey's biggest attribute is his communication and the way he works with teammates," King said. "He makes us all better. Everyone speaks about the greatest compliment you can get is (being) a player that players want to play with. He fits into that mould. "He makes us a better team." Canterbury retooled their attack ahead of their season's best performance, a 42-4 walloping of Manly three weeks ago, and Hayward has been tipped to continue their ascent in that area. "(Hayward at hooker) is obviously going to add that value to us in attack. We're obviously building on that each week but he'll bring a dimension to that as well," said five-eighth Matt Burton. "He's been great for us all year." Mahoney played 16-and-a-half minutes from the bench on Saturday, only coming on once the result was sealed. "(The change) is not really a discredit to him, it's just more of a credit to Bailey and how he's been performing. It's a tough position for Reed but I feel like he's handled it really well," King said.

Swans champion flags full-time switch in NRL after leaving AFL club after 15 years
Sydney Swans champion Nick Davis has hinted at making a full-time switch to NRL coaching after announcing his departure from the AFL club after 15 years. Davis is a Swans cult hero after winning the AFL flag with Sydney in 2005. He famously kicked four-straight goals in the final quarter as the Swans beat Geelong in an iconic semi-final that year, before their win over West Coast in the decider. Since retiring in 2008 he's held numerous coaching roles at the Swans (starting in 2010), and was previously a runner for the AFL club. He's been a specialist skills coach for the men's team, and also helped the women's team as an assistant. But with Dean Cox entrenched as the men's head coach and Scott Gowans leading the women's team, Davis feels his time at the club has run it's course. "After 15 years coaching at the Sydney Swans, I've made the call to move on," he wrote on social media this week. "I've coached across every level and am proud to have helped build culture, set the standard, and bring success to the club. I'm excited and looking forward to what's next……..Thanks for the memories." Nick Davis could make full-time switch to NRL coaching Elaborating on SEN radio on Wednesday, the 45-year-old flagged a potential full-time switch to the NRL. Davis has worked as a kicking and catching coach at the Sydney Roosters for a number of years, and also played for the club at the defunct NRL Nines event in 2020. He also works with the NSW Waratahs women's team in the SuperW. "It's been something that's been building up since the start of this year," he said. "I've had a variety of roles at the Swans and I've probably just hit my head on the ceiling a little bit. There was probably only two spots to go into, but obviously Coxy is the coach of the men's and Scotty Gowans is the coach of the women's. "The club have always been really good to me in terms of some of the other roles I have with other codes. At the start of the year I took some time off to sort of work out what I wanted to do with the next part of life and coaching. It's an opportunity to expand some of my other roles that I do across some of the other codes." RELATED: Ross Lyon's eye-opening claim about Harley Reid amid Saints bombshell AFL world rocked after Ben Cousins goes public with awful revelation Davis didn't go into detail about what the future might hold, but hinted at taking on a larger role with the Roosters in the NRL. He's had a part-time role with the TriColours for a number of years, but could be set for a more permanent code switch. "Having some time off from the Swans has allowed me to up my time at the Roosters and have a bit of success there in a few areas over the last month," he said. "My biggest job today is putting up some bombs for Ted (James Tedesco). There's a few conversations going on and I'm definitely excited to expand some of the roles I've been doing at the Roosters." Davis revealed he worked with Hugo Savala in the Sydney Swans' academy before the youngster switched codes and signed with the Roosters. Savala has been a revelation in 2026, with many calling for the Roosters to backflip on their plans to sign Daly Cherry-Evans so Savala can remain in the halves.
