Merchants seek urgent action as roadwork delay hits festive sales in Muvattupuzha
They have urged state govt to intervene immediately and ensure that work is carried out round the clock.
Recently, Muvattupuzha merchants' association staged a symbolic protest, accusing authorities and contractors of negligence and an unacceptably slow pace of roadwork in the town. Association president Ajmal Chakkungal told TOI that hospitals and several businesses were being forced to shut temporarily due to the disruption.
He alleged that inadequate monitoring, shortage of workers and poor coordination between departments were dragging the project into indefinite delays.
According to the association, lack of essential construction materials also stalled progress.
"Merchants in Muvattupuzha were the most affected in 2018 and 2019 floods in the state, following which Covid-19 pandemic affected businesses. It is at a juncture when merchants were slowly recovering that the long delay in roadworks is causing distress to people's lives," said Ajmal.

Merchants blamed both contractor and PWD officials for the situation, warning that if work does not speed up, further protests will follow. They insist that nighttime construction and deployment of additional machinery are the only ways to bring the project back on track and rescue the town's economy from its current standstill.

'Very worried about China', says OpenAI CEO Sam Altman with a warning for America and the new 'China-Safe' chips policy
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a stark warning that America may be underestimating the complexity and seriousness of China's advancements in artificial intelligence. During a rare on-the-record briefing with a small group of reporters, Altman said that relying on export controls alone is likely not a reliable solution to the geopolitical AI race. "I'm worried about China," Altman stated, speaking over Mediterranean tapas in San Francisco's Presidio, last week. According to a report in CNBC, he emphasized that the US–China AI race is deeply entangled, encompassing more than just who is ahead on a simple scoreboard. Altman detailed the various layers of the AI landscape, including inference capacity, research, and product development. "I don't think it'll be as simple as: Is the U.S. or China ahead?" he said, adding that China might be able to build inference capacity faster. 'China-Safe' chips policy not enough Despite the escalating U.S. export controls on semiconductors, Altman expressed skepticism that these policies are keeping up with the technical reality. When asked if it would be reassuring to have fewer GPUs reaching China, he responded, "My instinct is that doesn't work." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Altman elaborated on the challenges of a purely policy-driven approach, suggesting that export controls on one specific item might not be effective. "You can export-control one thing, but maybe not the right thing… maybe people build fabs or find other workarounds," he noted, referring to semiconductor fabrication facilities. "I'd love an easy solution," he added, "But my instinct is: That's hard." Altman's comments come as Washington continues to adjust its policies aimed at curbing China's AI ambitions. While the Biden administration initially tightened export controls, President Donald Trump went a step further in April by halting the supply of advanced chips altogether. However, just last week, the U.S. created an exception for certain "China-safe" chips, allowing sales to resume under a controversial agreement that requires chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD to give the federal government a percentage of their China chip revenue. The result is a complex and often contradictory set of rules that may be easier to navigate than to enforce. While U.S. companies deepen their reliance on chips from key American firms, Chinese companies are actively developing alternatives from domestic suppliers like Huawei. This raises questions about whether the strategy of cutting off supply is having its intended effect, or simply accelerating China's push for self-sufficiency in AI technology. As stock market nears a P/E ratio of 30 - should investors worry?
S&P 500 P/E ratio 2025 : The stock market is breaking records again. The S&P 500 had closed at 6,469 on August 14, a new high, but if you look past the headlines and into the details, something doesn't quite add up, as per a report. S&P 500 Hits Record High, But Cracks Begin to Show Despite slowing job growth, tepid GDP numbers, rising inflation, and stubborn interest rates, big-cap stocks keep soaring, according to Fortune. Investors seem to be betting on momentum, artificial intelligence, and hope for rate cuts from the Federal Reserve, as per the report. But beneath the surface, there's a flashing warning sign: the market's price-to-earnings ratio has climbed to 29.85, within a whisker of 30, and that should give investors pause, according to the Fortune report. Right now, investors are getting just $3.30 in earnings for every $100 they invest in the S&P 500, that's one of the worst deals just before the dot-com bubble in early 2002, as per the report. Over the past 25 years, the market's P/E ratio has only hit 30 a few other times and usually only because profits crashed during major crises like the 2008 financial meltdown or the early days of COVID, according to Fortune. In those cases, earnings dropped so much that it temporarily made stocks look more expensive than they really were, as per the report. But this is the first time the P/E has reached within a whisker of 30 since what's renowned as one of the most-unhinged times in the annals of financial markets, as reported by Fortune. ALSO READ: iPhone 13 still rules, but Samsung's new threat could shatter Apple's grip on the market Live Events While the P/E reached 30 only during just one period between 1888, where the data begins, and also during the start of the dotcom takeoff in 1998, according to the report. It also occurred in 1929, shortly prior to the wipeout ushering in the Great Depression, reported Fortune. The troubling factor is the way the multiple reached its current heights as the main driver was not rising profits, according to the report. Since the pre-COVID end of 2019, EPS for the S&P 500 rose by 67% or 9% annually, while the index has waxed far faster at 120%, or 14% a year, as reported by Fortune. The outlet wrote, "It's those divergent, sprint versus jogging performances that hiked the P/E from 22 to 30." But over the past couple of years, the opposite is happening, where bond yields, which had been stuck near historic lows, have jumped back to more normal levels, reported Fortune. The 10-year Treasury yield, for example, was just 2.2% on average from 2015 through early 2022, but now it's around 4.3%, making bonds a much more attractive option than before, as per the report. ALSO READ: As the July jobs report paints a grim picture, 114 companies plan layoffs in August - is yours on the list? Future Returns on Stocks Expected to Shrink At the same time, the earnings yield on stocks, the $3.30 you get for every $100 invested has actually dropped, according to the report. A good way to estimate future stock returns is to look at the earnings yield, which currently stands at about 3.3%, as per Fortune. If inflation stays around 2.5%, which means companies can raise prices and profits at that pace, one might expect total returns of about 5.8% per year, as reported by Fortune. That includes the roughly 1.2% dividend yield investors get from stocks. But that small dividend is a sign of how pricey stocks have become, according to the report. FAQs Has the P/E ratio ever been this high before? Only a few times, during the dot-com bubble, the Great Depression, and brief periods of crisis like COVID and 2008. What is the earnings yield on stocks right now? Just 3.3%, meaning you earn $3.30 for every $100 invested.
