Analyzing Penn State-Ohio State

Analyzing Penn State-Ohio State

USA Today5 days ago
The results of the US LBM coaches poll were very telling. While the uncertainty of the No. 1 overall spot took top billing, we now also know what coaches think about the Big Ten and most importantly, its top two teams. Ohio State, the defending national champs, sit at No. 2 with the Penn State Nittany Lions sitting right behind them at the 3 spot. Both could have made the cases for the coveted top spot, but in many ways, these rankings lend intrigue to perhaps one of the biggest games of the season: their Week 8 matchup in Columbus where both teams could be 1 and 2 respectively should Texas falter. Needless to say, the popcorn will almost definitely be out.
Penn State fans know the score when it comes to the Buckeyes. The only win they have had over them in the past decade was also the last time they won a Big Ten title, back in 2016. Nevertheless, last year at home was their best chance at redemption. But much like years past, poor execution and lack of consistency saw them come up short yet again. Who knows what would have happened if they had won their CFP semifinal and faced off against the Buckeyes in the national title? Penn State fans would probably blanch at that thought.
On the other hand, with the start of the 2025 season comes a new narrative for the Nittany Lions. They enter the season with one of the most accomplished rosters in the sport and potentially as the Big Ten favorite. They may have not handled the psychological burdens of last year, but this squad has a different vibe of comfortability to it. They have the natural swagger, yet composure now to navigate another long, grueling season and their playoff experience will help them in the long run.
Meanwhile, Ohio State will have a new face at the helm of their offense in Julian Sayin, with a lot of rumors saying he has struggled in spring practices. However, he does have the benefit of the best receiving tandem in the country and a defense filled with experience and young talent who are hungry to step up. All Sayin needs to do is just keep the offense rolling without making too many critical mistakes. He will be heavily tested right from the jump at home against Texas, but this matchup is really the one that matters.
What's interesting for both teams though is that theoretically, this game might not matter at all. The new Big Ten format gives both squads less margin for error as they do not have to win a division for a shot at the Big Ten title. Still, for both programs, there is a lot at stake. For Penn State, it's the psychological hurdle that they must leap over. It's all fine and dandy when you can purportedly say you're the better team on paper, but if it doesn't show up on game day, there will be a lot more soul searching than just chalking it up to bad luck. For Ohio State, it's more about the marquee win on their resume. If they don't beat Texas at home the first game of the season, this matchup is the one that will sway the committee in their favor on Judgment Day. It also most certainly could prove that the Buckeyes are still the top dogs in the conference and every one will have to go through them if they want a title. Divisions be damned, both squads will play like they mean it. College football fans will want it no other way.

There's one big surprise. Minnesota Yes, the Golden Gophers - not what you would think of when you think of iconic Big Ten uniforms - were given a perfect 10/10 rating by the NBC football analyst. "Maroon and gold, underrated combination," he said. Former Ohio State football star Joshua Perry didn't really agree, though. He called it "aggressive" and we'd have to agree. Oregon The Ducks are synonymous with great college football uniforms, so it's no surprise that their throwback green and yellow uniform gets a 10/10 rating from the NBC analyst. Still, not everyone loves them, as they can be a bit much in the eyes of some fans. "No matter what combination, this is a 10/10," he said of Oregon's uniforms. USC Most would probably think that Ohio State or Michigan would get the final 10/10 spot here, given their history, but instead, it goes to the Trojans. "Pop keeps talking to me about coaching" - Tim Duncan on why he is hesitant to be in the NBA after retirement

"Pop keeps talking to me about coaching" - Tim Duncan on why he is hesitant to be in the NBA after retirement originally appeared on Basketball Network. There are NBA legends whose presence is felt long after their final game, not just on jerseys stitched into rafters, but in boardrooms, benches, broadcasts and front offices. Tim Duncan is not one of them. Though he retired in 2016 with five championships, two MVP awards and a level of greatness few ever matched, Duncan has spent much of his post-retirement years intentionally removed from the limelight, resisting the gravitational pull that keeps so many former players orbiting the NBA ecosystem. Staying away When asked why the San Antonio Spurs legend kept his distance, he said he simply doesn't want to be around. "Pop [Gregg Popovich] keeps talking to me about coaching or being around basketball. I'm not sold on that yet," Duncan said. Some of our younger audience may think of Duncan as just some former Spur. He anchored the team through two decades of unmatched consistency, helping them to a playoff appearance in every one of his 19 seasons. Under head coach Gregg Popovich, he became the embodiment of system basketball, leadership through humility and efficiency that bordered on surgical. So when he returned in 2019 as a full-time assistant coach under Popovich, it felt like a natural progression that perhaps foreshadowed a long second act on the sidelines. But it wasn't long before his presence faded again. Duncan's coaching stint lasted just a season. And even in that brief window, it was a part-time commitment by design. In March 2020, he stepped in as acting head coach for one game, a 104–103 win over the Charlotte Hornets, when Popovich was absent. It was vintage Duncan — calm, understated, effective. He didn't make a big show of it. That singular moment captured everything about Duncan's relationship with the sport after retirement. He respects it deeply but resists letting it define his life commitment Duncan's former teammates have followed more predictable paths. Manu Ginobili returned to San Antonio in a player development role. Tony Parker, now a team owner and executive in France, stays visible in international basketball circles. Even David Robinson, who preceded Duncan as the franchise cornerstone, remains close to Spurs activities and NBA events. Duncan, however, rarely shows up. He remains in San Antonio but moves in different circles, far from the media spotlight, focused on family and business ventures. This includes running the BlackJack Speed Shop, the custom car shop he founded during his playing days. That deliberate distance seems to be a mix of peace and priority. He doesn't speak of resentment or burnout. He rarely even comments on his own career. But it is known that his chapter as a player was complete and that his identity is no longer tethered to the hardwood. This isn't the first time Duncan has pulled away from something many assumed he'd embrace. After retiring, he didn't hold a press conference. The Spurs simply issued a statement and that was that. There was no farewell tour, final season of tributes or pregame ceremonies with framed jerseys and standing ovations. And yet, when the Spurs needed him, when Popovich called, he came back. It wasn't for a legacy burnish or a career in coaching, but to be present when it mattered. Even during the NBA's COVID-19 bubble, he was reportedly involved behind the scenes, helping prepare players without needing to be seen courtside. He still wears the Spurs legacy, but not as a uniform and not anywhere close to the front story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

"You immediately understand why he was so great" - Luka Samanic recalled how a retired Duncan inspired the whole gym as an assistant coach

"You immediately understand why he was so great" - Luka Samanic recalled how a retired Duncan inspired the whole gym as an assistant coach originally appeared on Basketball Network. Many wondered what would happen to the San Antonio Spurs after the golden trio of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker retired. Many great players have passed through the Spurs' legendary locker room — names like George Gervin, David Robinson and Kawhi Leonard — yet the franchise always found ways to stay competitive and transition between generations with minimal damage. It didn't take long for Victor Wembanyama to land in the franchise's lap, expected to be the face of the organization for the next decade or so. Still, of all those names, Tim Duncan stood out as something special, something more. The Big Fundamental, as he was called, is arguably a top-10 player of all time, and when a player of that caliber walks away from the game, replacing him is never easy. Duncan had an impact on all the young players on the team One of the young power forwards who got a chance in the post-Duncan era was Croatian Luka Samanic. At that time, Tim was an assistant coach, and in an interview with Basketball Sphere, Samanic spoke about the impact TD had on all the young players on the team. "Tim Duncan was our assistant coach the whole year. Just to see how he trains before our practice, how he stays in shape, and the habits he has — you immediately understand why he was so great. He worked with the big guys, helping with low-post play and defense. In an organization like the Spurs, a young player is assigned a coach who is the best for their development," he said. Duncan lasted just one season on the Spurs' coaching staff Samanic's words might be the best description of Duncan, a quiet leader. Timmy was never too vocal and always led by example on the court, and it's clear he stayed that way even after his playing days. Just how big of an impact he had is evident in how impressed Luka was after seeing Tim still working hard on himself, even post-retirement. It's hard to think of many great players who went on to become great coaches. We often hear stories about how those elite players get frustrated as coaches when someone can't execute something on the court that came easily to them, and that's where the disconnect starts. In the end, Duncan lasted just one season on the Spurs' coaching staff, remaining in more of a consultant role with the team. Tim later explained why he didn't push harder to become the Spurs' head coach. "It didn't grab me," Duncan said of his coaching stint. "I got a chance to be a head coach for a game and a half, that was as close to the game as I felt, as close as to actually affecting the game as I felt throughout the whole situation. But all in all, it wasn't the same adrenaline rush as being a player."Robinson once said Duncan reminded him of Popovich TD is just one of many greats who haven't fully transitioned into coaching, at least not yet. It's possible Timmy came into that role already fulfilled by his playing career and simply didn't have the same hunger as when he was directly impacting the game on the floor. It's definitely a shame Tim didn't stay on the Spurs' bench longer, because the general opinion is that he had all the tools to succeed. Robinson once said Duncan reminded him of Gregg Popovich because of his focus and mentality and that he had everything needed to become an elite NBA coach. Samanic's words only reinforce story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 10, 2025, where it first appeared.
