SMD Semiconductor calls on young talents to explore careers in chip design at TRACE 2025
KUCHING: Sarawak's homegrown semiconductor company, SMD Semiconductor, is calling on the next generation of talents to explore exciting career opportunities in chip design by visiting its booth at the upcoming Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Talent Recruitment and Career Exhibition (TRACE) 2025.
The event will take place on June 17 and 18 at the UNIMAS Kota Samarahan campus.
In a statement today, SMD chief executive officer Shariman Jamil said the company is actively seeking Sarawakian talents and aims to showcase the real-world impact of a career in chip design — a field that goes far beyond technical work.
'Chip designers are behind the technologies that power smartphones, electric vehicles, medical devices, and smart homes. With strong global demand, this industry offers long-term job stability, competitive salaries, and the satisfaction of seeing your innovations come to life,' he said.
Shariman added that SMD provides multiple pathways for local graduates, from internships to full-time career placements, in areas such as chip design, semiconductor engineering, and AI development.
He highlighted the company's flagship Semiconductor Mastery Programme, a six-month specialised training course focused on Analog Integrated Circuit (IC) Design and IC Test Solution Development Engineering.
The programme is run in collaboration with several key partners, including the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD), Melexis NV, a Belgium-based global semiconductor supplier, X-Fab Sarawak, a German semiconductor foundry, and the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS).
In addition, SMD works closely with local universities to deliver advanced training and education, including a postgraduate microelectronics programme in collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak.
'At our booth, visitors will be able to meet industry professionals, submit their CVs directly, and explore opportunities to join our team or enrol in specialised training at the SMD Academy, which is focused on preparing Sarawakians for high-value careers in the digital industry,' he said.
Shariman noted that SMD's participation in TRACE 2025 aligns with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg's vision to position the state as a regional high-value semiconductor hub by 2030.
'In line with this aspiration, SMD is championing sustainable innovation, circular economy practices, and advanced chip packaging. We are laying the foundation for long-term economic growth, research breakthroughs, and job creation in AI, automotive technologies, and integrated chip design,' he said.
TRACE is Sarawak's largest career fair and is expected to attract over 80 companies and more than 15,000 visitors this year.

Palm gains higher on Chicago's soyoil, crude oil rally
JAKARTA: Malaysian palm oil futures rose for the third straight session on Monday, tracking gains in Chicago soyoil after the US proposed increasing biofuels blending, and supported by the crude oil rally following tensions in the Middle East. The benchmark palm oil contract for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained RM156, or 3.98 per cent, to RM4,078 (US$961.79) a metric ton by the midday break. US President Donald Trump's administration on Friday proposed increasing the amount of biofuels that oil refiners must blend into the nation's fuel mix over the next two years, driven by a surge in biomass-based diesel mandates, pushing soyoil prices higher. "The broader edible oils market tracked gains in crude oil, as investors reacted to heightened risks of conflict between Israel and Iran. Supply disruption fears lead to heightened risk premiums," said Darren Lim, commodities strategist at Singapore-based brokerage Phillip Nova. The push in higher energy prices increases both palm oil production costs and potential demand for biofuels. In essence, the biofuel sector acts as an alternative energy source to crude oil-derived fuels, he added. Soyoil on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) gained 4.51 per cent. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract was up 2.57 per cent, while its palm oil contract rose 3.76 per cent. Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices were volatile on Monday after surging seven per cent on Friday, as renewed strikes by Israel and Iran over the weekend increased concerns that the battle could widen across the region and significantly disrupt oil exports from the Middle East. Stronger crude oil futures make palm oil a more attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. Exports of Malaysian palm oil products for June 1–15 rose 26.30 per cent to 662,580 metric tons from 524,596 metric tons shipped during May 1–15, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said on Sunday. Palm oil still targets the RM3,962 (US$933.33) to RM3,998 range, as it has almost broken resistance at RM3,927 per metric ton, according to Reuters' technical analyst Wang Tao.

Berjaya Land enters Greenland with RM170mil apartment project
KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Land Bhd, a subsidiary of Berjaya Corporation, is making its first foray into Greenland with an apartment project in Nuuk, marking the group's expansion into the Arctic region. This strategic move aligns with Berjaya's long-term vision of global diversification and builds on its 2019 acquisition of a 75 per cent stake in Icelandair Hotels ehf for RM223.1 million, strengthening the group's presence in the North Atlantic tourism corridor. Through close engagement with the Municipality of Nuuk, Berjaya Land identified a pressing housing shortage in the city. In response, its wholly owned subsidiary, Berjaya Greenland Invest A/S, secured land parcels to develop high-quality residential apartments tailored to Greenland's climate and infrastructure requirements. In a major step forward, Berjaya Land today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SIBS Sdn Bhd (SIBS), a Sweden-based modular construction company with a manufacturing facility in Penang. The partnership will leverage SIBS' advanced modular housing systems to deliver climate-resilient homes more efficiently and cost-effectively. "We are excited to move forward with this collaboration, which marks a key milestone in our efforts to deliver modern, practical housing solutions that meet real community needs," said Syed Ali Shahul Hameed, group chief executive officer (CEO) of Berjaya Land. He said the first phase of the development will feature 66 apartment units housed in two- to four-storey blocks, with a projected gross development value (GDV) of RM170 million. Syed Ali said that this project reflects Berjaya Land's broader vision of creating high-quality developments that are efficient, adaptable, and built with a long-term impact in mind. "Modular construction offers a smart and timely approach, allowing us to deliver faster and cost-effective homes while supporting local capacity-building. Our focus remains on developing spaces that not only serve today's needs but also lay the groundwork for resilient, connected communities in the years ahead." The housing initiative is currently in the planning and design phase, with launch targeted later this year. Beyond improving housing access, the project is expected to generate meaningful economic benefits, including job creation, local contractor involvement and long-term urban growth, Syed Ali said. He revealed that Berjaya Land is actively collaborating with the Municipality of Nuuk to explore the next phase of development, which may include a hotel and hotel residences to support Greenland's expanding tourism industry. With the opening of Nuuk's new international airport in November 2024, the city is set to emerge as a major Arctic destination, said Syed Ali. He added that Berjaya Land's planned hospitality investment aims to meet this anticipated demand while upholding strong principles of cultural sensitivity and environmental sustainability.
